About the Author
Sean Meyrick Hanley was raised in Old Greenwich, Connecticut and is a graduate of Lewis & Clark College. He was on the writing staff of "The Nanny" starring Fran Drescher and recently co-created the sitcom, "Half-Share" starring Alec Mapa (amzn.to/halfshare). He currently lives in New York City and is in pre-production for a feature film called "Scamdance" (scamdance.com). "The Convertible Life" is his debut novel.

`If something unpleasant happens in Hollywood but it gets no media attention, does it really happen?'

Sean Meyrick Hanley steps out of the scriptwriting arena of TV sitcoms and burgeoning films to climb the stairs toward the platform reserved for serious writers of the novel genre. It is difficult to believe that THE CONVERTIBLE LIFE is a debut novel, but then again how many writers have the chutzpah to be so very frank about so many areas of contemporary mores and lifestyles and puffed up dreams of young Hollywood immigrants - handsome lads awaiting their big break in film - and do it as convincingly as Sean Meyrick Hanley? It works.
Hanley has not only created a spiky spicy sex laced story about one Thom Thompson who happens to have an identical twin raised (after a fashion) by their Mommy Dearest who is known to have murdered their Daddy in a freaky plotted accident. And that is only for starters. Thom is a marginally adjusted sitcom actor who is about to crash and burn his boyfriend Adam's newest project when Rod Hard, his porn star identical twin, appears on the scene, beds his boyfriend, introduces Thom to crystal meth, creates an unforgettable scene at the popular West Hollywood watering hole The Abbey, and Thom beings being voicemail stalked by his Daddy who indeed was not buried after his mother's staged funeral for him but now is diminishing due to a brain tumor and wishes to see Thom before he dies in New England. Breathe.... If that sounds like a lot of TMI then realize the book has only started and you'll get an idea of how overflowing with ideas and parodies (and even memoir-quality facets) flow out of this high speed book.
Where Hanley takes chances is his use of contemporary personality names and events that give credence to his tale. He has a gift for putting a magnifying glass to the gay world of West Hollywood and the dynamics of the acting profession, and while he keeps the humor on the surface at all times, the sensitive reader will gain some insights into the sub-glitz lifestyle of this unforgettable Thom et al. The scene in the Abbey john stall between Thom and Rod Hard is one of the more daringly (and achingly) hilarious passages in the book - and that is but one of many mind-bending bizarre episodes that pepper every page. It is raw, raucous, very well written insider prose and likely will have a long shelf life - before it goes into the celluloid state! Grady Harp, November 13

Of twins, twin towers and twinks

A debut novel is perhaps one of the riskiest ventures in the arts...like a stand-up comic's material on his first attempt to make people laugh. Will anyone like it? Fortunately for Sean Meyrick Hanley, the applause should continue for a very long time.
There are many things to like about "The Convertible Life" and if the plot is as convoluted as any episode of "As the World Turns", all the better. It's a page turner. Set in and around 9/11, the newly minted twenty-one year old Thom Thompson III has just begun to gain notoriety as a Hollywood actor and his meth-infused soul fights and bitches with just about everybody. But then a call from his "father" shakes him awake and he decides to investigate his confused past.
The first pages of "The Convertible Life" sort of rotate in place...Thom's unhappines is palpable and he seems locked in a career that isn't exactly taking off to any degree. Yet when he decides to return to New England and find out once and for all about his dysfunctional family, the book really begins to soar. It occurred to me in writing this review that the direction of "The Convertible Life" looks much like the symbol of the "Y" chromosome....a circle with an arrow pointing northeast. What an appropriate symbol it is!
I've never met the author but we both had the distinction of growing up in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, a village of about 6,000 people attached to the larger town of Greenwich. Much of the book takes place in Old Greenwich and the sites mentioned really exist. As Thom begins to unravel his family secrets, "The Convertible Life" takes on more twists and turns and ups and downs than the section of Tomac Avenue on which he was raised.
Mr. Hanley's narrative style is wonderful. Along the way he shows his terrific sense of humor by adding occasional footnotes to enlighten (especially younger) readers. Now that I am more than a certain age, I'm glad to be reminded of what the sitcom "Bewitched" was all about...thank you Sean!!
There is great depth to this novel which serves as a cushion to the accompanying humor. The reader is treated to a story that gets better as it gets more uncomfortable for Thom. And yes, try to read it in one sitting. The suspense to the very end demands one's concentration.
I commend Sean Meyrick Hanley for his first (novel?!) novel. I highly recommend it to other readers and I have no doubt we'll be hearing more from this gifted writer in the future.

Running on Empty: A Debut Novel Well Worth Reading

Sometimes you can tell a book by its cover, in this instance, both front and back. Designed by Mario Brassard, to whom Sean Meyrick Hanley’s first out of-the-showroom novel THE CONVERTIBLE LIFE is dedicated, the cover cleverly captures a lot of what happens in the protagonist Thompson Thompson III’s drug-enhanced and sex-tripped odyssey from California to New York. (I assume that Messers Brassard and Hanley are partners in life, the current politically correct way to describe those who are cohabiting with their own kind, rather than partners in, say, a law practice or high-end bric-a-brac shop or both.) An Alexander Calder inspired mobile and Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet grace the cover; the automobile practically becomes another character in this novel that careens from one crazy event to another. And 911 is particularly significant.
To say the novel is cleverly written would be an understatement. Mr. Hanley, moreover, is no slouch when it comes to coining new phrases or reworking old ones. For example, he gives new life to the tired old question “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it”-- or however it goes-- as it comes up in variations again and again. Try this one of many: “If something unpleasant happens in the Catholic church and there are no Priests or Popes to bear witness, is it still a sin?” Or “Father Daddy’s [one of many outrageous characters] kind eyes had definitely left the building” a la Mr. Pressley of course. The novel is riddled with literally dozens of references to show biz-- movies, the theatre, television, Hollywood-- you name it. I particularly liked the sometimes wicked footnotes that the first person narrator includes. You skip them at your peril. Thompson Thompson III informs the reader in footnote 2 on page 1 that “Mommie Dearest” refers to the 1981 movie starring Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford (a movie that I saw with my own mother, by the way) and reminds us that “If the term, ‘No wire hangers!’ means nothing to you, then perhaps you should put this book down now and sign up for a Netflix membership.” I suspected then that I was in for a wild ride, and wild ride for the most part it was. Mr. Hanley’s narrative only occasionally runs up on the curb. (Speaking of footnotes, surely this author is the only person alive who remembers the first line of Bret Easton Ellis’ debut novel LESS THAN ZERO? AMERICAN PSYCHO gets a mention too.)
After all the sex, drugs and sometimes impossible-to-take-seriously plot, the ending of Mr. Hanley’s novel is ice-cold serious and will stop you in your tracks. The best compliment I have to offer the author is that I would read his next book.
