Just Get It!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but I am very happy that I ordered it. I don't know the author, just saw that it had come out in something I was reading on FB. Took a chance and bought it.
Am so glad I did. I am still reading my way through it slowly, but she is very clear and thorough and I can already tell this will transform my shading(it already has). It always intimidated me before. After reading only the first part of this book, I began incorporating it and I'm already delighted. I know from experience that practice makes perfect, which means I will only get better as I continue reading the book and trying things. Without this book, I might have eventually gotten here but it would have taken a lot longer.
The book is well-written and the illustrations are wonderful. If you have been intimidated at all by shading, just get this! It's great. Thank you, Cris Letourneau.
Ok, it's now a couple of days later...I've been reading slowly (lack of time) but I have been shading like made and guess what--it looks great! First time I can say that. Get this book and use it!

Some good information, but terrible quality printed book.

I have been building my Zentangle library and am fairly picky about which ones I'm choosing to buy. Some of them seem pretty repetitive and I was attracted to this book because the author seems to cover a subject that hadn't been widely covered before in detail. I'm not all the way through with it yet but I definitely have some comments to share. First, the pros. I like the author's breezy, friendly writing style and the amount and type of information she offers to the reader. She keeps the subject very relevant to shading as it pertains to tangling and without making you feel that you're sitting in a Drawing 101 class. I liked that. She shows a lot of examples and exercises and provides space for you to try it yourself, although I myself don't like to mark up books like that; I like to use separate pieces of paper.
Now that cons. While it is very admirable in my book that the author seems to have self-published (I give her a tremendous amount of kudos for this), the quality of the product suffers greatly. The book is printed in black ink only, which is fine, given the subject, but this is a book about a visual art, and the print quality of the book is HORRIBLE. The Xerox machine at work makes better copies! The author's illustrations and photos are muddy and faded, so the impact is lost. Furthermore, there are TONS of typos throughout the book, including on the back cover. To me, that's just inexcusable, especially for the price being charged. The cons really are distracting and take away from the positive aspects of this book. My advice to the author is to hire a new printer and a proofreader and reissue the book. My warning to potential buyers of this book is that it is not "eye candy" as so many of the other Zentangle books are, but it does contain some useful information about shading. I'm just not sure it is worth the money.

One-of-a-Kind

I have to say that I own just about every Zentangle book that has been published, and there is nothing like this one among them. As a Certified Zentangle Teacher, I often have students ask me questions regarding shading and I will be whole-heartedly recommending this book to all my students in the future. Chris covers many individual tangle patterns and even categorizes them so that patterns not presented in her book can be shaded. There are no rigid rules and she provides alternative choices for shading a variety of tangles. I have not seen any other book covering this topic with specific regards to Zentangle. It is jam-packed with knowledgeable advice and well worth the cost.
