Because the Confederate bushwhackers had sabotaged the bridge over the Platt River, Sam almost loses his life while traveling to St. Joe on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. Having graduated from Harvard, magna cum laude, Sam’s son Jeff lands a job working for President Woodrow Wilson in Washington, D.C. Matt, Sam’s grandson, meets the love of his life at the Frog Hop in St. Joseph and becomes a successful farmer and Federal Congressman. Graduating from Central High School in St. Joseph, Mo., Sam’s great-grandson, Paul, obtains a medical degree from Baylor University in Texas and then joins the Navy and nearly loses his life when the Israelis attacked his reconnaissance ship, the USS Liberty in 1967. Honorably discharged from the Navy, Paul becomes a Texas Congressman and after a ruthless campaign in 2012, he is overwhelmingly elected President of the United States. Each one of the four generations of the Ronan family added greatly to the security and financial well-being of this country’s citizens. Easy Reading Fictional Historical Novel

Flinchpaugh's "Against All Odds" is an historical fictional novel with a pronounced utopian thread. The book chronicles the four generations of the Ronan family, starting with Samuel Ronan who immigrated to the United States from Ireland in the 1840's, and concluding with Paul Ronan who ultimately became a U. S. Presidential candidate in the early part of the 21st century. The book effectively and accurately intertwines actual historical events and place descriptions with its fictional story of how the Ronan family assimilated into the United States and ultimately became a family of stature and power. It is especially effective in describing scenes and events in Missouri during the U. S. Civil War, such as the destruction of the Platte River bridge in Northwest Missouri. Its descriptions of events and places during the Civil War in historical Saint Joseph are especially interesting to current local area residents. The book concludes with a utopian theme reminiscent of Edward Bellamy's "Looking Backward," in that conversations and plans between Ronan and his presidential campaign staff promote in detail the author's visions of a more perfect society with regard to social, economic, and political recommendations. The book is easy reading, and its underlying recommendations for a more perfect society are certainly worth considering.

Against All Odds-President Paul Ronan” is an excellent book to assist the reader in understanding the important issues facing our country today. Instead of being a boring political book, he has integrated important political issues into a historical novel with characters that are not real but are written about in such a convincing way as to tell the story of what is causing our country to descend to a third world status. After reading his book, You will then understand what you can do to help our country to once again become a Constitutional Republic instead of a failed Democracy.

Midwest Author Presents His Views in a Fictional/Commentary Style

The author has distinct political and social views that thread through this fictional account of how this country could have been if the political history were different. I know the author and he is passionate about his political ideas and he has an all inclusive attitude. I admire his ability to think for himself. This book would be a good read just to try to understand this nice man's point of view.
