Kristen Jex thinks her life is normal. School, boys, moving every few years for her father's Air Force job. And yet, her growing depression will soon unhinge everything she knows and loves. She copes with her teenage turmoil by writing music and journals, and clinging to faraway friends who give her strength. In the process, she inadvertently documents the nuanced development of a highly misunderstood mental illness, Borderline Personality Disorder, in a way never before recorded. Heartfelt, hilarious, and musical, A Concrete Sky is simultaneously a coming-of-age story and a psychological puzzle. It's a fascinating tale about finding oneself while losing one's mind.

Engaging and musical epistolary novel...
By tim3t
Full disclosure: I am a main character in this book. While I tried to remain 100% impartial, my review is undoubtedly colored by memory, fantasy, and vanity.
Wow... what a fascinating peek into the mind of a teenager. Kristen is a typical high-schooler, but is at the same time suffering from something that completely sets her apart - Borderline Personality Disorder. If only she found this out as soon as The Reader.
Personally, when I read A Concrete Sky, I experience a bizarre disconnect. I am a participant as well as an audience. I feel the pain of the main character while simultaneously knowing what is coming. I want a happier, "Hollywood" ending than the one I know is coming. I wish I could change my actions and words while simultaneously knowing they help shape the narrative. It is painful as well as cathartic to travel back in time and relive aspects of my life I'd rather ignore. It is also a fascinating, head-first dive into a best friend's 'behind-the-scenes' that I never even knew existed.
Kristen Jex pulls no punches in order to deliver the truth to The Reader. She has a story to tell and does so in the fly-on-the-wall tradition of Perks of Being a Wallflower and 84, Charing Cross Road. As we progress into A Concrete Sky, so we also progress into the frustrating and sometimes frightening world of Borderline Personality Disorder.
The best impression I can give you is from the author herself. If this doesn't immediately grab you, you aren't cool enough to enjoy this novel.

Great memoir showing the progression of her mental illness through the story of an entertaining young woman
By Craig
A Concrete Sky is a memoir of a young woman who was later diagnosed as having Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Through journal entries, e-mails, letters that were never sent, and 20/20 hindsight, Kristin's progression from innocence to BPD was interesting, sad, and quite entertaining. I wish that I had been that insightful when I was younger. Not afraid to tell us of her honest mistakes, Kristen Jex's memoir would be a great read for almost anybody, specifically a young person, trying to understand how Depression and BPD can slowly develop and to show that there is hope even when one feels completely alone whilst surrounded by family and friends.

This is an important book
By W. W. W.
While the book is an entertaining read in itself (in the angsty/confused teen vein of Perks of Being a Wallflower), the most important part is the psychology she explains (and documents) throughout the story--and the message that there's no shame in being mentally ill, and it can get better if you don't give up hope. Any parent who has a teen with potential mental issues (or signs that something's wrong like cutting, which the book goes into briefly) should read this book. Further, I think anyone in the psychology community who is interested in bipolar or borderline personality disorder would do well to read it.
Can't help but highly recommend. :) And while some of it is heavy, it's also pretty hilarious in parts.
