Authoritative and approachable study of Hawaiian forests

Professor Mueller-Dombois has almost single-handedly brought universal attention to one of the most interesting and threatened forest systems in the world. During his long tenure at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, he, his students, and colleagues have uncovered many aspects of forest dynamics that can be applied to ecosystems in other parts of the world and that are directly relevant, indeed critical, to establishing meaningful conservation strategies. Many books on ecology are largely intended for a more scholarly audience. That is fine, as scholars and others who deal with forest management rely on authoritative treatments to develop better management policies and strategies. What sets this volume apart is that it is also uniquely accessible. Prof. Mueller-Dombois' writing style is authoritative, yet easily understandable by a layperson. In fact, reading this lovely volume is like being on a field trip. In his conversational style, Mueller-Dombois not only discusses the changes that the 'ohia forests undergo over time (natural changes as well as those resulting from human impact), but brings to life many of his colleagues and students. Although he might be the key researcher of these forests, he is quick to credit others who have joined him in an effort to better understand and restore them. The photographs that embellish the text are critical to understanding many of the points that Mueller-Dombois makes. Some are older and are a little murky; however, they and the boxed text (which add explanatory details) are invaluable. Some of the ecological points could have been delved into a little more deeply. For instance, we learn that the low species richness of Hawaiian rainforests is "remarkable" when compared with rainforests in other parts of the world. Although the isolation of the Hawaiian archipelago is posited as an explanation, it might also have something to do with the youthfulness of the Hawaiian islands. In addition, the range in leaf size, form, and tree shape of the 'ohia lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) is notable. Thus, the specific epithet "polymorpha." Why such variability? Is it genetically-based or a result of local environmental conditions? The concept of "phenotypic plasticity" is raised, but never discussed in any detail. Some readers might hope for an index or references (although there is a list of "suggested readings"). Other than that, this is a fantastic guide to the history of these forests and a testament to the grand research legacy of Prof. Mueller-Dombois. I would be remiss if I did not mention that Sam Gon (of The Nature Conservancy) provides a poetic and touching introduction to this volume.

Fantastic discussion of Hawaii's native forests

This book presents a great academic discussion on Hawaii's native forests. As a trained forester, I will say that the material in the book is very engaging from a scientific perspective. I think this book is appropriate for anyone involved in academic study of island forestry or successional forests. I think it would also be an enjoyable read for a layperson with a serious interest in Hawaiian forests.

A carrier crowning achievement for Professor Dieter Mueller-Dombois

This book is an overview of decades of intensive research carried out on the Ohia Lehua rainforests of Hawaii. Central in this is succession dynamics, specifically the processes through which the rainforest assembles on terra nova, remains stable or rejuvenates after perturbations.
The book is a remarkably good choice for acquisition by libraries where there is interest in Ecology and Natural History. The book has a place on the scientist's desk because it presents good ecological science, in the hands of the general visitor to Hawaii who looks for a fascinating read on the Islands' natural history, and in student hands as a textbook on Island Ecology.
