moonstruck
By David Winkler
I think Below the Moon should come with a caveat posted on its cover: "Beware. No matter your age, you will not likely finish this book in your lifetime." This is not meant as a deterrent, but as an encouragement. Though I disdain cliches, the book is truly a gift that keeps on giving. The breadth, depth, and sheer command of historical, mythical, and literary images and references on display are astonishing. Everything below the moon and beyond is orchestrated with such finesse and generosity that if you take time to think about it, you're bewildered by the author's command of damn near everything ever written. He puts me in mind of Chaucer's Oxford Scholar: "Gladly learn, and gladly teach." Jeff House seems unquestionably to entertain himself on a daily basis with thoughts that for most of us would entail massive migraines; I will be forever beholden to him and his fine book for opening new doors to a house (no pun here) that I thought I knew well but have only begun to explore. Archetypes and myth inform who we are, not just us bookish types, but everyone on the planet. When you spend time in these pages you realize with startling immediacy how connected we all are to one another; what seemed a mere intellectual concept strikes home viscerally in voices that speak to us through the ages. When I suggest, somewhat impishly, that the reader may not finish this book in his or her lifetime, I don't mean to imply that the text is tough going; quite the opposite--it's eminently engaging and enthralling. I mean that one is prompted to take time away from Mr. House's text, as I often do, to go read Coleridge, Whitman, Homer, Shakespeare, the Upanishads, the Greek myths, whatever other author or work provocatively ignites page after illuminating page. And when I say Homer, I mean, yes, that Homer, but Homer Simpson as well. In his exhaustive examination of archetypes, Mr. House leaves no stone unturned, whether the Stone Age or the Rosetta Stone. Pop culture plus the refined intellectual culture advanced by Matthew Arnold share space between these covers. You will meet up with everyone from Achilles to John Wayne to Peewee Herman. It's all here in the interest of synthesis, which I believe is one of the major lessons Mr. House wishes for us to take away from this masterful work. We learn from his other inspiring book, Writing Is Dialogue, the value of inductive thinking, that we must be hunters and gatherers of as much evidence as humanly possible in order to develop a clear and uncluttered thesis about whatever topic is under investigation. In Below the Moon, our task is to examine evidence bequeathed to us through archetypes in order to arrive at a cogent and meaningful understanding of what it means to be human. We come to realize, with a frisson of joy, that the chill of the ocean on our bare toes feels no different than it did to the ancient Phoenicians. Sometimes we require a guide, a Virgil or a Beatrice, to guide us through life's dark wood. In Below the Moon, Jeff House is that guide. Well-rewarded will be the reader who takes this journey, for the journey itself leads to one well-induced conclusion: love of life, love of one's neighbor. And didn't we always know it was so?

Great Book
By Jeff Thomas
It's exhaustive, for sure -- which makes it exhausting sometimes -- but House nails it. He connects the dots; I use his material all the time in my classroom, and my students eat it up. Well worth the money.

Below the Moon
By Teacher
Jeff House's opus Below the Moon is an extraordinary text. Pricey? Yes, but worth every penny. In a time when real teaching is discouraged in favor of generic transmission of the "common core" which basically reduces education to rote instruction, House offers an alternative approach which not only fulfills all of the "core" requirements but will actually inspire students with a love of learning and an understanding of the eternal verities revealed in literature. It is an essential resource for anyone who wishes to teach literature rather than merely prepare students for standardized tests. Obviously a labor of love and the result of years of preparation, in it House demonstrates the rare ability to stand back, look at the forest, and see exactly how each tree fits into its place. The sheer amount of scholarship he demonstrates is staggering. Is there anything the man has not read? The works he discusses range from classical literature to popular culture--songs, films, comic books--and everything fits. He also shows how the archetypes relate to the "-isms"--romanticism, naturalism, existentialism, etc. Below the Moon is not merely a scholarly tome, however. In it, House includes numerous suggestions for creative projects teachers can incorporate into their curricula to engage their students with the various archetypes. Below the Moon reminds one of why s/he became an English teacher in the first place.
