Bill Richards and Ashley Steel have traveled to over forty countries and have two wonderful and well-traveled daughters. As a family, they have lived in or visited the United States, Canada, Asia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and the United Kingdom. The idea for this book was hatched when they over-prepared for a trip to Japan and discovered that their preparations made the trip particularly successful. Bill Richards is an accomplished forest ecologist, specializing in restoring forest habitat for rare wildlife species. His work has appeared in the Natural Areas Journal, Conservation Biology, and Forest Ecology and Management. Bill grew up on both sides of the U.S.–Canadian border and accompanied his parents to over a dozen countries before graduating from high school. He has also lived and worked in Australia, Thailand, and Austria, and has traveled extensively in Central America, Eastern and Western Europe, and West, Southeast, and East Asia. E. Ashley Steel, PhD, is a research scientist specializing in river ecology and statistics. She spent many summers teaching science to kids at a University of Washington academic summer program, leading students on enriching adventures with activity pages and worksheets. She cofounded the Science Inquiry and Research Council (SIRC), a nonprofit organization focused on improving science education. Her published curriculum, The Truth About Science, has sold over 5,000 copies. Her academic travel bug was ignited in college during a semester in Denmark, and she has since been honored with a Luce Fellowship for a year in southern Thailand, and a Fulbright Fellowship to live and work in Austria.

Chock full of great tips
By CTV
All I can say is that I wish I had this book 10 years ago. I've got two kids, and we have traveled a fair bit with them, but it is always a challenge to keep them engaged and interested. This book covers guidelines and helpful tips for travelling with kids from the early stages of planning a trip to packing to airports to the plane to the trip itself. It doesn't tell you where you should go to appease the kids, it helps your kids enjoy the sites that the adults want to go to, including museums, cultural and historical sites. Every chapter is full of great suggestions - some of the sidebars are really helpful: "Fourteen Quiet Activities for the Plane" or "A Dozen Games While You are Waiting" (for food, or a bus, etc). There is so much to be gained from travelling with your kids and this book helps to prove that it doesn;t need to be so scary.

Extraordinary Family Travel Resource & Inspiration
By Jessica Voigts
As a longtime family traveler - and travel writer - I've seen much written about the ins and outs of family travel. However, I've not read such an inspirational book as this one. From helpful tips to detailed packing lists to journaling ideas to ways to make travel easier and more fun, The Art of Traveling with Kids is pure genius. Whether your kids are teens or babies, and whether you've had decades of experience with family travel, or are just starting out, you'll find many gems in this book. I sat down and devoured it in a few hours, and have too-many-to-count post-its sticking out for pages I want to reference again and again. Highly recommended!

Perfect book for traveling abroad or getting creative around town!
By AZ School Psych
WOW! WOW! WOW! This book is packed with practical information for parents traveling abroad, or families who are making a day trip out of the cultural areas within their community.
Where do I begin? The book has wonderful charts to help prepare your family for the trip, including packing charts for children. Another thing I loved was the section about plane gifts for your children based on their ages. The journaling section was also fantastic, because years later you and the kids will have a wonderful reminder of the adventures you shared.
I was more than prepared to give this book 4 stars, until I reached the end of the book and read their ideas for “mini-trips,” which allow your family to explore new cultures without ever leaving town. After I read that section, the book jumped to 5 stars.
My husband and I believe in the importance of travel, as it provides a hands-on educational experience. This book truly demonstrated that the opportunities for global education are everywhere.
Lastly, after I read a book, I pass it along to a family member or friend, or donate it to the library; however, this one is a keeper, as it makes an excellent reference book which I know I will refer to time and time again. Bravo to Richards and Steel on writing a wonderfully relevant book for parents who also embrace the life-altering perspectives and educational value traveling provides.
