The teacher took a step back, and her voice cracked when she asked him to leave, but Carlito was determined to find the bully. I pointed him out.
These were everyday occurrences. The screams, shootings, noise, and bizarre behavior were part of everyday life in the projects. It infected us all, but our strength as a family kept us together. Even though we were poor, living on welfare in a roach-infested apartment, my mother believed in the future someday we would live in a better place. But times were tough. My father took the meat from free lunches that kids threw away more than once to provide us with a meal. My brother was once stabbed while saving my life. My parents finally scraped together enough money to send us to a place called Portland, Oregon. It was a desperate attempt at a safe new life, but our sudden escape from the ghetto actually meant the beginning of the struggles I faced growing up in Portland. Here, I write about failures, triumphs, and the changes we went through every day.
I wrote how the loss of my mother at an early age and, years later, the loss of my father were put into perspective by the love and support of a childhood friend who would later become my wife. This is a story of my internal fight to see my mother's dream for me come true; it details the stark contrast between surviving the ghetto and facing the challenge of starting a new life in an unknown place. It shows that, like a recovering alcoholic, a person who has lived with violence must forever fight to channel that violence into new tools for survival, and it chronicles the passion and frustration born of such a beginning. It shows that the dream for a better life can come true. I'm an average person, and my story is everybody's story.

I felt like I was a time traveler, following the author in time to the tenements of Lower Manhattan, then to Portland, Oregon and the magic of the northwest neighborhood of the 1980s, with its extremes in family incomes. I will always remember the voice of my mother's prayers for a better place to live. We found that place when we moved to Portland, Oregon. There were times when I felt I couldn't finish this memoir, as I hoped to bring out the lives of those who played a significant role in my life. I try to live life to the fullest, to appreciate it, and to be thankful that every day I wake is another day I get to enjoy with my family.
I hope you enjoy this book. But most of all, I thank you for your support in achieving my dream to be a writer. Thanks for reading.

this book took me back in time. Growing up in Nortwest portland too I was able to see where the book was taking me.Knowing what Ed went though growing up there and knowing some of this friends it book was easy to read and understand. with his saddnes,tears and joy..Knowing that NW pdx was the poor part of town and not the preppy area that it is now. learn what kids did and family were like back than. great book .

A great read...chronicles a tough life in a hard working family who uproot their lives in New York to search for a better life Portland OR. A true story told from the perspective of Eddie Regory. Like life itself...there are many up and downs but the human spirit shines through...well written..entertaining..

I enjoyed this book. It brought back memories of growing up in Portland, and spending a great deal of time in northwest Portland. I felt every emotion from laughter to sadness and everything in between.
I like reading a book I can relate to, and recognize the places being written about.
