About the Author
Ed Jacobs is the coordinator of the masters’ program in the Counseling, Counseling Psychology, and Rehabilitation Department at West Virginia University. Professional publications include 25 articles in books and journals as well as four books on counseling techniques: Impact Therapy, Creative Counseling Techniques: An Illustrated Guide, Group Counseling in Correctional Settings, and Group Counseling: Strategies and Skills. Ed has been recognized for his outstanding teaching and contribution to the field. In 2006, he was given the Outstanding Teacher Award in his college. Also in 2006 he was given by the Association for Creativity in Counseling the Innovator of the Year Award. In the past he was recognized for his contributions in group work by being given the Professional Advancement Award and selected as a Fellow in the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Ed is a licensed professional counselor and has maintained a small private practice for over 25 years. Chris Schimmel is the coordinator of the school counseling master’s program at West Virginia University. She serves on the counseling licensure board for the state of West Virginia and is on the task force that is updating the state standards for school counselors in West Virginia. Chris is co-author of Group Counseling: Strategies and Skills, which is in the 7th edition with an accompanying DVD which she co-produced with Ed. Chris was a school counselor at all three levels and teaches courses in counseling children, play therapy, and parenting. Chris and Ed presents throughout the United States, and other countries workshops each year on Impact Therapy, Creative Counseling, Theories into Practice and Group Counseling for state and national conferences, agencies, school districts, and organizations. They are known for their practical, down-to-earth style in both their presentations and their books.

Impact Therapy - A Review

This book provides a wonderful addition to any therapist's personal library. In this book, Ed Jacob describes his therapy approach clearly, concisely, and thoroughly. Each concept or main idea of this therapy approach is carefully addressed and described. Many illustrations and examples are provided on how this particular therapy model can be put to work in multiple counseling settings and with multiple clients. The examples provided are excellent in that they take into account how Impact Therapy can be helpful in each many different situations and circumstances, including resistant clients, various client concerns and issues, and different cultural and age groups and how Impact therapy could be helpful in each particular situation.
The book also reads easily thus making it an attractive resource for the beginning counselor. The experienced counselor can also find this resource helpful, in that this book also provides one with additional, creative ideas and interventions to add to his or her own "tool box."
Certainly, as counselors, we are sometimes overwhelmed with new information and readings regarding developing models, theories, and ideas, however, this book is definitely a rich resource to include and make as a priority to add onto that "to-read" list.

Impact Therapy: the courage to counsel

This book provides wonderful ideas about how to do counseling in a practical and effective way. For the student who has only seen a handful of videos or a couple of demonstrations from faculty, this book will tell and show you how it's really done. For practicing counselors who are hungry to learn more strategies or who are bored with their current approach or are working with clients with whom the traditional "talk therapy" is not effective, you need this book!
