The old bus ferried its riders into unforeseen adventures along parts of the old Silk Road, over dirt roads in eastern Turkey, Iran and the deep gorges of Afghanistan; on through Pakistan to northern India and the Himalayan region of Nepal, on the route that has come to be known in recent history as “The Hippie Trail.” Fascinated by India and its people, Kircher returned to India in later years, staying with families in villages and making lifelong friendships, in an effort to comprehend the elusive Indian culture that survived 350 years of British occupation. About the Author
MARJORIE KIRCHER is an avid traveler far and near, a searcher for the underpinnings and missing details. She is an occupational therapist working with children and adults and has been awarded the Cornelia Myers Writer's Award for her article on perceived exertion, appearing in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. Kircher also enjoys pastimes of painting and photography. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband Mitch, and almost-literate dog. The India Traveler is her first book.

A fascinating journey along the Silk Route and India by an intrepid woman

Margie Kircher's "The Indian Traveler" book resonated deeply with me, as a fellow world traveler. Even though I extensively traveled separate continents, in a different era, she managed to bring back that unique experience of wonder and cultural discovery that can be shared by countless voyagers around the planet.
I especially connected with the Jomsom trek experience with its tropical lush forest, its steep ascent from village to village to reach Poon Hill's stunning snowy peaks vista. What luck to be able to see parts of the ancient Silk Road Trade Route, especially Afghanistan before the modern geopolitical change and wars made that part very hard to access for American travelers. She describes each stop in her voyage with vivid details like her cross reference to the fragrant oleaster smell of Herat which like Proust's madeleine "brings the minarets of Herat back before my eyes again".
What makes this book enchanting is how wholeheartedly Margie loses herself to the spirit of discovery. She looks at the world with a fresh, nonjudgmental, and kind prospective, which helps her forge lasting friendships along the way and wins her the kindness of strangers. She muses over cultural differences and navigates cultures opposite her own with patience and respect which leads to acceptance, embrace and in the case of India such love for the country that she revisits it in three different decades. What follows is an interesting account of India's global changes as seen through a traveler's eyes.
After each trip Margie emerges stronger and more lucid about her own culture, but also hungry for yet another trip. I wish most travelers, no matter where their road leads them, could see the world with such youthful undaunted explorer's spirit: one that seeks to break cultural barriers while enriching one's life with unforgettable sights and insights.

A great romp back to an exotic time.

I was also backpacking around Europe in 1973 and Margie's book brought back memories that I was sure were lost from my cranial hard drive. Her writing style is personal and very accurate with regard to the era. Her extremely adventurous spirit is an inspiration to all that have wanderlust. The world has changed a lot in the last 40 years. We are lucky to have such an erudite historian to document a time that can never be again.

Inspirational and Entertaining!

Marjorie Kircher has written a wonderful memoir about India. I actually rationed myself while reading this book, because I didn't want it to end. With three visits spanning 24 years, I got a wonderful view of the evolution of India, the U.S. and Marjorie. As a reader, I gained inspiration through Marjorie's courage and India's compassion.
After reading this book, I want to go to India. Marjorie discusses the the differences between Eastern and Western philosophy. "India accepts you, so you accept yourself." The Eastern wisdom of laying groundwork of acceptance and self-respect is such a rich and nurturing upbringing, one that fosters growth and happiness. The West tends to lay a groundwork of needing to be a better person, one that challenges from the start because we aren't yet good enough.
With references to the music and politics of the time, during each of Marjorie's journeys, I delighted in the time-travel that allowed me to visit many sweet memories of my own.
After my rationing of this book to make it last longer, I now realize, I'm just going to re-read this book!
