A Departure and a Good One

This is a very different story from the ones TJ Glenn usually writes and it's a very good one. Partly autobiographical and part fiction, it's written in a first person style reminding me of some of those gard-boiled private eye tales from the 40's. It's easy to read, the characters are easy to empathize with, and the blending of the RenFaire elements with the hero's search for revenge, fought with swords instead of the usual shoot-out, is a worthy climax to a exciting story. Mr. Glenn's descriptions shine, and the foreword and afterword, written by actual participants in the "true-life" events on which the story is based only serve to enhance.

A Book Both Serious and Fun

Murder Most Faire was an accidental find for me. I ran across it at the Printers Row Lit Fest when the publisher, Post Mortem Press, had a booth there. It took me a little while to be in the mood for the book, but once I picked it up, it was done in 24 hours. I loved it. The characters were a great deal of fun, and I loved that all the side characters had great personalities, too. Even the one who got murdered. Man I loved him. And he was only alive for a few pages. I liked that the book wasn't just about solving a murder, but was also about moving on and honoring the memory of a friend. Those aspects made the book great. Then there were the parts that made the book FUN. The main character is a choreographer for the all the fight scenes in his area Renaissance Faire and it very adept at martial arts and fencing. This made for a very kick ass character and some fun scenes that show off his skills. I loved the realistic feeling of the character despite the fact that he would seem too perfect if not done well. Since the Ren Faire is a place dear to me, I really enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes work of the Faire in the book, even though it was a bit of a side plot that intertwined with the characters healing and moving on. The fact that the book was based on an actual experience the author had made it even better for me, because it added a new layer to everything that was going on in the story. Over all, I would definitely read this book if any of the aspects appeal to you. It is not one you'll regret picking up!
