Working with MediaWiki is the most up-to-date guide to MediaWiki, the world's most popular wiki software. MediaWiki is best known for running Wikipedia, but it's also used by organizations and communities of every type and size, from fans of television shows to major companies storing vital corporate data.
In around 300 pages, and accompanied by dozens of diagrams and examples, Working with MediaWiki clarifies how to use MediaWiki effectively, from the basics like wiki syntax to topics like creating data structures, controlling spam and improving search.
Working with MediaWiki places a special emphasis on Semantic MediaWiki, an extension as well as a family of extensions, that transforms MediaWiki into something more like a full-fledged database, with the capability to have forms for users to enter and edit data, as well as all sorts of aggregation of the data, including maps and calendars. The book contains four chapters about Semantic MediaWiki; it is the first-ever book to cover the usage of SMW. But whether or not you plan to use SMW, the book in an indispensable guide to using MediaWiki to its full potential.
Foreword by Brion Vibber, lead software architect for the Wikimedia Foundation.
This book was first released in November 2012, and updated in April 2014 to cover changes to the technology.

The Single Best Book on Mediawiki there is
By chris tharp
As one who is days away from launching a massive Mediawiki site I can only say I wish I had this book six months ago. By nature I hack my way through things, which I normally do because most books seem to always miss some part of the equation. Almost every other book on the Mediawiki software barely covers its extensions -- the part of the software that takes it from being interesting to revolutionary. This book gets into the weeds without getting lost in them. It does a really nice job of covering extensions, especially the masterpiece of extensions, Semantic Mediawiki.
Maybe the bigger problem with every other book on the Mediawiki software is their blinded by the success of Wikipedia so they basically give you enough details to re-create Wikipedia. This book, while conscious of the success of Wikipedia, isn't defined by that success and therefore doesn't assume you're just trying to re-create Wikipedia. It shows the power of the software to be a platform for all sorts of projects. If you're only buying one book start here.

A MUST HAVE for Educators, Corporate and School
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
As background, I'm the IT manager at Classpros dot com, and we design custom Wikis for hundreds of clients each month, from schools to companies, businesses, government, and even small entrepreneurs.
This book is LIGHT YEARS AHEAD of ANY other book on wikis today! It is up to date, thorough, and perfectly paced for both beginners and advanced users.
The mistake many people make in considering MediaWiki is missing the deep power of Mediawiki NOT for "traditional" wikis, but as a database, with CSS, PHP, HTML and numerous extensions, skins and plug ins. Frankly, if I wanted to start a DBMS foundation for web X.Y (ala Amazon!) with advanced semantic web and text processing, I'd seriously consider Mediawiki, and this is the ONLY text that details all of the key applications OTHER than (as well as) Wikipedia-type objectives.
If you're new to Wikis, you are very fortunate this was published-- get it now! If you're an old pro, perhaps you're like a seasoned Excel user who is brilliant at dashboard and spreadsheet deliverables, but has never touched VBA, deep macros or other features "below the surface" of the program. THIS BOOK gives you the "inside" features that will allow you to inductively project (generalize) to MANY other applications, including your own creative ideas! Much simpler and more powerful than SQL in many ways (but also able to work with it if you choose), this will at least open your mind to MW in many additional lights.
Quick example: I worked with a retired teacher who wanted to start an online database to do instant background screenings for moms, screening potential day care providers. After exploring all the options, she opted for MW and got the whole project done for under $2,000 with MW, a project with estimates as high as $50,000 with other databases! This might seem "far astray" from the Wikipedia applications, but is just an example of the lesser known power of this program that this author explores.
You don't HAVE to know CSS, PHP, HTML etc. to profit from this volume, but at some point you'll have to bring in those aspects and skills to fully customize and take advantage of MW in applications other than straight wikis. For straight Wiki objectives: you STILL need this book, as there are up to date details not available in any current book, with wonderful "follow on" web suggestions to get and keep you continually current. If you're a teacher, this technology is a MUST for educators "with it" in today's online and e-learning technologies.
Library Picks has nothing to do with the authors, Amazon, publishers, etc. of the books we review, and we always buy the books we review. Our reviews are only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and potential Library purchasers.

A must read for all Mediawiki/SMW users!
By Joel Natividad
If you're doing anything with Mediawiki, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book!
And if you're doing anything with Semantic Mediawiki (SMW), this is REQUIRED reading! Yaron has been part of the core team that has been maintaining SMW and its numerous extensions through the years, with Yaron being principal author of several crucial extensions like Semantic Forms and Semantic Drilldown.
Not only that, he has been running one of the few consultancies dedicated to Mediawiki and SMW - Wikiworks, which is the company behind Referata - the only hosting provider dedicated to semantic wikis.
I should know! I've had the pleasure of working with Yaron and the SMW community through the years, and SMW is a core part of our technology stack at Ontodia.
As for the book, it fills a much needed gap in having a comprehensive introductory text to Mediawiki, particularly SMW. Over the years, I've always struggled when introducing semantic wikis to different audiences as there was no comprehensive text on the subject. Mind you, the book doesn't replace the mailing list and the website - that's where a lot of the in-depth material is and will remain (and Yaron and his cohorts are very responsive in both forums).
But the book does give you the requisite Mediawiki introduction before getting into the SMW extension and showing the power of semantic wikis. All in an approachable, practical language that is often absent when reading semantic technology text.
Hopefully, in a future edition of the book or on the workingwithmediawiki.com website, Yaron can include an "SMW in a box" that shows some of the examples in action. Perhaps, he can even create a Referata image that book readers can refer to while trying out the examples?
As with most technical subjects, a lot of SMW's concepts just doesn't lend itself to narrative prose and require some trial-and-error.
