About the Author
Philip Lawton has over 30 years of experience as an investment professional, chiefly at large banks and insurance companies. He was also the founding head of the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM®) program at CFA Institute. Lawton currently serves as the 2011-2012 chair of the North American Verifiers Roundtable, a forum for firms whose practice includes assessing investment managers’ claims of compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®). His areas of competence include leadership and ethics, regulatory compliance, financial and operational risk management, investment performance measurement, and managerial accounting. Lawton earned the baccalaureate, licentiate, and doctorate degrees in Philosophy in the French-speaking section of the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and an MBA degree with a concentration in Finance at Northeastern University. He is also a Certified Management Accountant (CMA), a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a Professional Risk Manager (PRM), and a CIPM certificant. He is the co-author of The Top Ten Operational Risks: A Survival Guide for Investment Management Firms and Hedge Funds (Stone House Consulting, 2010); the co-editor of Investment Performance Measurement: Evaluating and Presenting Results (Wiley, 2009); and the author of numerous articles and scholarly papers.

A pleasing, informative and worthwhile read

This collection of essays by Philip Lawton is an excellent introduction to many of the issues that the investment industry wrestles with on a day-to-day basis. The reader wanting to know more will want to supplement these writings with in-depth study of the topics of interest. This book serves to provide a wonderful perspective on multiple topics. Lawton pokes fun at issues in the industry and his light hearted approach to prose makes the essays very readable. Reading this collection is a lot like listening to the musings of an avuncular and experienced professor who, with patience, common sense, and wit explains the industry challenges and his perspectives on them.

This collection of short and readable essays provides all-important perspective for achieving and sustaining success in the investment and financial services field. The book presents an enlightened portrayal of overall work environment dynamics and examines occupational work product interdependencies. Articulating the essential common ground that exists between and across organizational lines and levels in the financial community, the author advocates adopting thoughtfully developed ethics and operations standards to gain competitive advantage through organizational best practices recognition and professional fellowship within the industry.
