About the Author
Stef Delarge has been successful in business and law, forging a new paradigm in both to earn millions at an early age. Before that he travelled the world as a hostel touring bohemian, and then after, as a first class traveler, providing him with insights on the human condition from both ends of the socioeconomic spectrum. Naturally drawn to anthropology and physics since adolescence, and eager to understand what makes some people and cultures prosperous while others struggle, the secrets to money, power, and prosperity inspired Quantum Capitalism. Delarge has a bachelors and a doctorate degree from two esteemed Marxist indoctrination camps, i.e., American “higher education” institutions.

Movie Worthy

Great book Quantum Capitalism covering politcs through the social and physical sciences, weaving in history as well. The most unique part was a new physics theory proving exactly what money was through physics, and that capitalism/libertarianism only where life, liberty, and property were protected is nature's system for the greatest freedom and prosperity. People may already believe that, but the uniqueness was that he actually demonstrated with proof through the 1st and 2nd laws of energy. There was also a great section on Islam, the Jews, and the Middle-East, showing that cultural values (instead of natural resources) determine prosperity or misery. Then in the last chapter, Delarge persuasively claimed to unify the physical and social sciences which he uses to methodically detail the solution for creating prosperity. Brillant. Never read a book like this before. This book in my opinion should be considered for a movie, it has such meaning and depth that can only be projected in a film. Highly recommend reading.

Philip Lawton has over 30 years of experience as an investment professional, chiefly at large banks and insurance companies. He was also the founding head of the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM®) program at CFA Institute. Lawton currently serves as the 2011-2012 chair of the North American Verifiers Roundtable, a forum for firms whose practice includes assessing investment managers’ claims of compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®). His areas of competence include leadership and ethics, regulatory compliance, financial and operational risk management, investment performance measurement, and managerial accounting. Lawton earned the baccalaureate, licentiate, and doctorate degrees in Philosophy in the French-speaking section of the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and an MBA degree with a concentration in Finance at Northeastern University. He is also a Certified Management Accountant (CMA), a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a Professional Risk Manager (PRM), and a CIPM certificant. He is the co-author of The Top Ten Operational Risks: A Survival Guide for Investment Management Firms and Hedge Funds (Stone House Consulting, 2010); the co-editor of Investment Performance Measurement: Evaluating and Presenting Results (Wiley, 2009); and the author of numerous articles and scholarly papers.

A pleasing, informative and worthwhile read

This collection of essays by Philip Lawton is an excellent introduction to many of the issues that the investment industry wrestles with on a day-to-day basis. The reader wanting to know more will want to supplement these writings with in-depth study of the topics of interest. This book serves to provide a wonderful perspective on multiple topics. Lawton pokes fun at issues in the industry and his light hearted approach to prose makes the essays very readable. Reading this collection is a lot like listening to the musings of an avuncular and experienced professor who, with patience, common sense, and wit explains the industry challenges and his perspectives on them.

About the Author
In 2011, Andrew Bowen embarked on the most challenging journey of his life, and completely the year utterly transformed. Once consumed with hatred toward religion and the faithful, he fully immersed himself in 12 faiths and philosophies in order to discover the humanity within them all. He called that journey Project Conversion. Andrew now speaks and writes about insights and lessons he gleaned from the journey and teaches others the art of combating the very hate, ignorance, and intolerance that once consumed his life.

When Anger turns to Love

In his latest book, Project Conversion: One Man, 12 Faiths, One Year Andrew Bowen traces his own spiritual odyssey through the course of a calendar year. Bowen embarked on a journey of discovery that was comprised of experiencing twelve new-to-him religious faiths for a period of one year, one month per faith. Bowen's avowed purpose for this journey was "to become those I hated most."(p.5) . Why? According to Bowen, the hate and anger in his life had become an addiction. He lived to hate or hated to live. In his words, "Hate made me {feel} (my emphasis) alive."(p.5) This project was a year spent in spiritual rehab, a self described "detox program."(p.5) The correlation of substance abuse with Bowen's hatred of all religious faiths and traditions is an apt description. The same destructive tendencies and search for a "high" that substitutes for life found in chemical abuse are also seen in those who become dependent on anger. The need for the "high" above all other things, family, love, food is paramount. Hate and vengeance become the most important thing. The courage needed to "kick the habit" of anger dependency is inspiringly portrayed in the book.
The book is well-written both in the chronicle of Bowen's personal emotions and in the description of the individual religions. Each religion was treated with a sensibility that is well-nigh impossible for an outsider but Bowen, in some unexplained manner, managed to become an insider, albeit a temporary one. His frustrations, challenges, surprises and victories are all told with an attitude of humbleness and a simple honesty. In spite of the scholarship and erudition within the book the reader will not find a "superman" or an "expert" within its pages. Rather, there lives a young man who has enough honesty and courage to face his demons and, instead of fighting them to the death, he embraces and loves them until they turn from demon to friend.
I found this story to be a prophecy of hope in a rather dark world. During a time when our country has taken partisanship to death- invoking heights and cannot seem to have a discussion that isn't an argument in disguise, Andrew Bowen has managed to look at all sides of the issue and arrive at a home truth that applies to everyone. The Divine exists and moves in all of us. It's a starting point.

Captivating

When I started reading Project Conversion I couldn't put it down. The author's journey to find peace by adopting and experiencing twelve different faiths as his own was too captivating to stop. Before reading the story I was familiar with most of the religions covered in the book but not all of them. Project Conversion gave me a closer (or brand new look) at religions I've never had the chance to learn about before. It also allowed an intimate look on a sincere journey to battle hatred. I highly suggest this book.

Unusual experience

Religion is difficult to evaluate, I think. What's right, what's not right, what works, what doesn't... This author's experiment is one I can appreciate, but the result and its conclusions apply to him (and maybe to his family). I can't be sure his outcomes will apply to others. His insights and experiences are certainly useful, but religion is such a personal matter that I'm not sure readers will be able to apply those insights to their own quests.

Even so, his experience is unusual, and could be a jumping-off point for a seeker,.

A Beach Bag Essential Read!

Buck's Landing is the first in the New England Seacoast Romances from Cameron D. Garriepy. Set in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire Buck's Landing is an impeccable romance, perfect for tucking into your beach bag -- even if your beach bag is actually an over-sized purse and your only free reading time happens late on a chilly Michigan evening.

Garriepy brings Hampton Beach to life with her attention to detail and obvious appreciation for the beauty of the sleepy little town Sofia Buck works so hard to shake from her enviable brunette curls. She makes you yearn to walk along the boardwalk, inhale a serving of Blink's Fry Doe (with powdered sugar and cinnamon), and sink into the moonlit sand to watch Chinese lanterns or turn loose your thoughts to the crashing waves of the Atlantic. In her hands, Hampton Beach is more than a setting; it's a crucial third main character.

Sofia and Silas Wilde find their lives colliding as they settle into opposite trajectories in Buck's Landing. Silas is beginning his life there after leaving his lucrative and emotionally-empty life in New York City, and Sofia is wrapping up the loose ends of her deceased father's life in a place she ran from as soon as she had the means to do so.

Billed as a romance, Buck's Landing doesn't disappoint: the attraction between Silas and Sofia is palpable, alternately electric and tender, and the obstacles they encounter, from her lingering anger with her father to a potential job in enticing Santorini, are authentic and complicated.

Garriepy's writing style is sensual, and not just in her romantic details. She peppers Buck's Landing with lush descriptions that make her characters and their lives unique and personable -- Silas, Sofia, and Hampton Beach are all written in a way that is utterly unforgettable.

While the unfolding relationship between Sofia and Silas is obviously the cornerstone of Garriepy's story, other elements are at play here.

Sofia, in particular, is dealing with figuring out how to reconcile a painful past with a place that draws her in like the tide. Selling Buck's Landing, a multi-generational family business means a clean break, but it also means sacrificing her deceased mother's kitchen to the whims of seaside developers.

Garriepy's narration style, which gently rocks between Sofia and Silas, allows the reader to become fully invested in their individual happiness as well as their future as a couple, making Buck's Landing a delicious read -- even if, like me, you can't take it to the actual beach with you right now.

Perfect Beach Read

I know it's winter, but this book made me feel like I was on a hot beach with salt on my tongue and love in the air.

For that alone, I'd give it five stars.

With rich descriptions, a leading man I could fall for, and a heroine I could be friends with, Buck's Landing was the sort of book I love to read and then read again. The secondary characters made me hope Garriepy turns this novel into a series and the descriptions of Blink's Fried Doe had me googling. If you read the other reviews, you'll get a solid idea of what the books about. I'll just say I couldn't put it down and when I finally turned the last page, I let out a little sigh of happiness and turned to face the wreck my house had become while I was at the beach.

Surf, Sand & Sexy!

I don't read many romances (I'm a scary story kinda girl), but every once in a while I need a little of the big "R". Buck's Landing delivered everything I love in a romance story - sizzling chemistry, steamy scenes that deliver heat without being raunchy, humor, and well-developed characters moving in a tight, believable plot. And as the cherry on the sundae, Cameron Garriepy can weave a world so beautifully imagined and so honestly written that I found myself right there on the beach with the smell of the salt air in my nostrils. The lights, sounds, scents, and summer excitement of the boardwalk's carnival vibe was particularly enjoyable. A great, satisfying read.

EXODUS PHARAOH FINALLY IDENTIFIED! Should've been obvious!!

Fantastic!! Finally, the pharaoh of the exodus is identified without lingering questions and contradictions! Dr. Collins not only identifies Tutmosis IV as the pharaoh of the exodus very convincingly but he also demonstrates how the other 18th dynasty pharaohs (or any other pharaohs) could not be. The chronology is explained very well both with text and charts. However, the review submitted by Vince does have a point. It will be very helpful to study the history of ancient Egypt prior to reading this book. (An excellent source for this would be The Great Courses: History of Ancient Egypt w/Professor Bob Brier.) Once you have a sound understanding of ancient Egypt's history AND an understanding of what is REALLY written in the Bible about the exodus this book makes the identity of the exodus pharaoh certain. You can also watch Dr. Collins do a presentation about this on youtube. It is called, "Will the Real Pharaoh of the Exodus Please Stand Up." There is also another one he did called, "A Brief history of time:' Who were the Pharaohs of the Exodus?' Dr.S. Collins" Everything one would expect to happen to Egypt following the plagues, the plundering, etc only happened once throughout all of Egyptian history and that was immediately upon the death of Tutmosis IV (died at the parting of the sea). Knowing that Tutmosis the IV was the Pharaoh of the exodus also makes everything Akenaten (The Heratic Pharaoh) did (converting to monotheism and other things) make sense. Vince also makes the point that the book is not very long. While this is true it is also very thorough and honestly with how obvious it becomes that Tutmosis IV was the Pharaoh of the exodus there is no need to drag things out just to make a thicker book. Well done! Thank you Dr. Collins!

Any Bible scholar will enjoy this book tremendously. I have often taught about the Hebrew bondage and exodus from Egypt and now have a lot of new knowledge. This book is filled with historical research about the different people groups who were living during this time period including a lot of Egyptian historical facts. The author uses Biblical facts and matches events and time periods to identify the pharaoh of the exodus. I found the book absolutely fascinating and learned a wealth of historical information.

Pleasantly surprised.

It's been awhile since I read a fantasy novel, but after finishing The Retrieval Artist series I picked up this book. As I've come to expect of Rusch, the characters are well developed and the story interesting. If you favor character driven books, you won't be disappointed in this book. It's a quick read drawing on familiar ideas in fantasy fiction.

Seriously, It's Art

There's a trend these days to reimagine existing works in new ways. Rewrite as musical, throw in zombies, etc. They all share one common element: a gimmick. Reading about Holden Caulfield's secret exploits as a dinosaur-fighting ninja is funny - really funny - but there's no real staying power.

It's possible Phil Wells began this project as a silly idea ("Haha! Big Lebowski! Homer! Hahaha!"), but it definitely didn't end up as one. This is not a one-trick pony. In fact, it may be a no-trick pony. This is an honest-to-goodness adaptation. If it weren't, it would be an abbreviated version that quits after 50 pages or so, because nobody goes this far for a joke.

When I first read Dudesong, I had only seen The Big Lebowski once, and about ten years earlier. I didn't remember very much from the film at all, and certainly not the plot. Still, I had no trouble following the events as they were presented in verse. I then rewatched the film and reread the book, and was completely amazed by the attention to detail and determination evident in the work.

This book is mature, sophisticated, and a pleasure to read. It may land in the novelty post-modern mashup section of your bookshelf, but it will by far be the most accomplished literary piece among its peers.

Worth your time.

Just excellent. Funny as anything, well written, a slightly different take on Lebowski and his journey -- you'll enjoy reading this once you get into it. I found it coming alive when I decided that if it was a song, it was meant to be said aloud, and so I read. Laughing. Try it!

One part Lolita, one part Pretty Little Liars, one part Twilight Zone

Cam is the favorite teacher in the high school. Young, attractive, energetic, encouraging, and a real mentor for his students. He connects with his students in a unique way. However, when one particular student begins to connect with him on a deep emotional and romantic level, Cam heads down a path of self destruction that will take amazing twists and turns.

This was a really amazing story. One part Lolita, one part Pretty Little Liars, and one part Twilight Zone. While the story of a teacher getting involved with a student is nothing new, the author certainly puts a unique and thrilling spin on it in this book. What I liked best about the story was just when you think you know where it is going, a new twist is thrown at you. It keeps you on your toes as a reader, and I was really surprised at the ending. The action moves quickly from the beginning, and kept me glued to the book. I finished the book in about 3 hours, because I just could not put it down.

The only drawback for the book, for me, was the character development. I found the characters to be a little flat, not as robustly developed as I would have liked. This is not a terribly unusual thing for thrillers, often developing the action is a higher priority, and the action was certainly well developed in the story. However, I found myself unable to connect with the characters. Had there been just a bit more development of them upfront, I think I would have felt the pain of the story a lot more intensely. As it was, I had no pity for Cam, but I had no anger for him either. This is just a personal preference, wishing for more character development. The story certainly works as it is.

Dark! Daring! This story blazes through your mind! Move over Patterson! Here comes Nappi!

"Nobody Has to Know" blazes through your mind with an original kind of perversity. I can't believe how good Frank Nappi is, whether he's writing about military veterans, an autistic baseball player and his caring coach (as in previous award-winning books, see endnote below) or about illicit feelings of love and lust between a teacher and his student...as in this shocking, gripping book.

According to Amazon's book description: "'Nobody Has to Know,' Frank Nappi's dark and daring new thriller, tells the story of Cameron Baldridge, a popular high school teacher whose relationship with one of his students leads him down an unfortunate and self-destructive path. Stalked through text-messages, Baldridge fights for his life against a terrifying extortion plot and the forces that threaten to expose him. Nobody Has to Know is a sobering look into a world of secrets, lies and shocking revelations, and will leave the reader wondering many things, including whether or not you can ever really know the person you love."

Why is Baldridge attracted to the young girl in the first place, especially when he has such a good, normal life: nice job, lovely fiancée, the whole works? What problems does she share with him? What happens to interrupt their budding attraction/addiction to each other? After a tragedy, how does someone find out about his frightening predicament?

How does his fiancée react when she learns "another person's" version of the truth? And most important, does this unfortunate teacher ever get his life back?

Nappi answers those questions and more as he transports his readers through an intricate web of lies, deceit and betrayal (first by Baldridge; later, directed at him). Although it's hard for most people to sympathize with a man with such "lustful" desires--no matter how altruistic they seem to him at the time--Nappi weaves his story in such a way that Baldridge is, indeed, a very sympathetic character...a victim of circumstances beyond his control.

In fact, I generally view vice and foils with scorn, profound dismay and tragic sympathy, but my feelings for Baldridge are such that I view the actions of his extortionist (and others who may be helping) to be far more reprehensible than what he has contemplated... My heart goes out to him.

But you will have to read for yourself and form your own opinion.

Even though this is Frank Nappi's first thriller, he pulled it off to perfection! He made his characters come alive in the high drama of real life. In my opinion, Nappi always hits his mark; I've never begun a Nappi book and been able to put it down. As always, he paints his characters in such a fashion that I feel like I know them. Just as in real life, I care for some and hate others, depending on their deeds. In this book, the only one I really cared for was this teacher; even though he was not always a paragon of virtue, he was human and tried to do the right thing.

And Nappi's pacing is spot on; I couldn't turn the pages fast enough...er, perhaps with so many people using e-readers, I should say "couldn't scroll fast enough." :-)

Be forewarned: After a series of hair-raising twists and turns (that not even the most cunning reader will guess), the ending left me gasping for breath. I'm still panting as I think back on it (an unforgettable kind of book).

Endnote: I have been a huge fan of author Frank Nappi since I read his debut novel, the award-winning "Echoes from the Infantry: A Novel" in 2005. At that time I predicted he would be a huge star in the literary world. And my faith in his great potential was rewarded; since then he has gone on to write "The Legend of Mickey Tussler: A Novel" which was released as a film last September and is now a DVD. Movie title is "A Mile in His Shoes," starring Dean Cain and Luke Schroder. Next, Nappi penned "Sophomore Campaign: A Mickey Tussler Novel," the exciting sequel which is also slated for film.

Dare I say, "I told you so?" I dare! And now I say: "Frank Nappi will soon be a household name!" You know, like James Patterson, Stephen King, Dean Koontz...and the list goes on. And it couldn't happen to a nicer man; Nappi is a very popular school teacher in real life; happily married with two teen sons.

Well-crafted story but non-charsmatic characters

Having read Frank Nappi's two original novels - ECHOES FROM THE INFANTRY (brilliant) and THE LEGEND OF MICKEY TUSSLER (involving) - this reader had very high expectations for NOBODY HAS TO KNOW. That Nappi is a superb author now goes without saying. He is a superb wordsmith, a magician in developing three-dimensional characters, and he has the knack for momentary disruption of a storyline in order to clarify a new character's or situation's significance without breaking speed. This latest novel continues all of those fine traits. The problem for this reader is this story is about people who are simply not likeable, and not really caring what happens to people you don't care about in the first place hampers the appreciation for what otherwise is a brilliantly produced novel.

Cameron Baldridge doesn't do relationships well, starting with first loves (an Ecuadorian girl who is his dream but who drowns on the night she is to move back to Ecuador, to high school loves that ended badly), to a live-in girlfriend with whom he is frequently at odds, job wise and philosophically. At age twenty-five he is a high school English teacher (his girlfriend is a successful entrepreneur in business) - he is handsome, beloved by his students, but has a wandering eye. That cardinal rule of student teacher relationships stepping over the line to the physical is the key here: the beautiful but disturbed Nikki seeks his help, Cam falls for her, and even knowing that the affair is against the law he foolishly proceeds to a complete physical relationship in a motel where after their love feast Nikki dies from a mixture of prescription drugs and alcohol (yes, Cam even broke the law of giving alcohol to a minor!). From there Cam must cover his tracks, lie to his girlfriend, become involved in internet email threats from a student who knows about Cam's blatant indiscretion and in turn seduces Cam to repeat his unlawful line crossing and that goes on and one until several others become involved in murder, extortion and blackmail - AND it all ends badly.

Perhaps Nappi's reason for writing this novel is to call our attention to the dangerous misuse of the social media, or focus our attention on the degree of sexual freedom among high school kids, or just demonstrate how far libido can overshadow judgment to the point of destroying futures for the ecstasy of a moment, or simply ask us to look at the quality of relationships today. If that is the case, he succeeds. It is just difficult to care about anyone of the characters in the well-constructed novel. Grady Harp, November 12

About the Author
Shannon Michal Dow has Master degrees in Education and Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts and has taught English and literacy for a combined 10 years at the secondary level and as a college tutor to both undergraduate and graduate students. She earned an ETS Recognition of Excellence for her performance in English Language, Literature, and Composition: Content Knowledge PRAXIS II. She also is a playwright and her plays and co-authored plays have been produced around the country and have received 19 awards and honors, including from the Julie Harris Playwright Competition, Beverly Hills Theatre Guild, L.A., CA; The Abingdon Theatre Company New Play Series, Off-Broadway, NYC; The Players Club, NY, NY; Writer’s Digest Competition; Orlando Shakespeare New Plays Festival, FL; and the McLaren Memorial Comedy Competition, Midland, TX. Her co-written play, Killing Dante, was published by Samuel French, Inc. in 2008, and her co-authored book, Writing the Award Winning Play, a beginner’s and intermediate’s guide to playwriting, was published in 2003. She currently teaches English and literacy in Connecticut where she lives with her husband.

helpful and simple

I am an 11th grade student and found this to be helpful. One review said it was of no use to teachers and that the essay format was not new. All I can say is it helped me. I guess my teachers didn't know this format because they used one that was already set out. Last year, my teacher would give us a fill in the blank thesis statement, like In Macbeth, ____________ gains/loses the most amount of integrity because of _______, _______, and ________. This book helped me to come up with more interesting thesis statements and topic sentences. It helped me focus my paper. If you're a teacher and want new ways to motivate reluctant writers, maybe this isn't the book for you. But if you're a student and just want a guide to write a better essay, I recommend it. I looked at other essay writing books and either they were for teachers or they were way too advanced (at least for me). So I liked this one because it was pretty easy to follow.

I sent this book back, the day after receiving it. I need a fresh approach to teaching young adults and middle-school students how to put together an essay. I am looking for something to stimulate and engage reluctant writers. There is nothing new in Dow's workbook. It contains the same old formula: prewrite, draft, revise; and the same instruction: topic sentence, details. The examples are all from literature, which precludes the book from writing persuasive or cause/effect essays. I was disappointed and resentful of needing to pay return postage.
