About the Author
Mark Scott Smith, an academic pediatrician born in 1942, became intrigued by WWII in the Pacific when he looked down from a Seattle hillside and saw thousands of Toyota trucks being unloaded onto piers that had served as American troop embarkation points during the war. After extensive research regarding Japanese attacks on the Oregon coast and the U.S.Army Sunset Division's New Guinea campaign, he wrote this fictional account of events that reflects both American and Japanese viewpoints of the Pacific War.

A powerful story

Mark Smith has written a novel that is beautifully developed, fully imagined, and often moving. Enemy in the Mirror interweaves the stories of ordinary people on two Pacific shores, coastal Japan and the American Pacific Northwest, whose lives are altered by World War II. As we circulate between nations, cultures, and characters, we get a kind of 360-degree understanding of the terrible complexities of war and its reach into lives with much commonality--at the very moment when, as warring people, we are most polarized.
The depth of Smith's research is apparent, descriptive scene-setting excellent, and dialogue has the ring of authenticity as well as of the period. Smith locates us in the thick of battle with unsparing detail, yet also lets us see how wreckage piles up in lives far from wartime action, i.e., those who wait at home. Enemy in the Mirror brings us many lessons in impermanence. It is to the novel's credit that we come to see these less as existential peril than as the experience of grace.
Because Smith has loosed his characters into such rich philosophical territory, I sometimes wanted more from them--more of their interior struggles, their doubts, their moments of grief or bliss. Writing historical fiction poses a unique challenge here, as events must come out as they happened--must align with the facts--which means that characters remain on something of a leash. But I hope nonetheless that Smith will push further in his next novel, allowing his characters to expand, breathe, and even surprise him--and his readers too. I look forward to reading another of his books and recommend this one highly.

Touching and informative

I have read numerous historical novels about WWII, but very few about the Pacific front. This story provides how the war affected the American and Japanese in battle and at home. The stories intertwine with touching and horrific outcomes and the battle scenes are graphic and realistic. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys history, but the back story makes it that much more interesting as well as informative. A very good read!

Thoughtful and Entertaining

Perhaps I am too close to the author to evaluate Enemy in the Mirror impartially since he is a long time close friend. But, with that said, I am not surprised he has written such as compelling and interesting book. He has excelled in everything from high school class president to a compassionate and exemplary pediatric physician. And now as an author, to no one's surprise, he has excelled again.
As an Air Force Vietnam veteran I was exposed to the devastation caused by war on every level of society especially the family. Knowing how the loss of my friends killed in war affected their family members, I often wondered how the Vietnamese dealt personally with family tragedy. Reading Enemy in the Mirror, with its realistic description of war's impact on Japanese and US citizens, has helped me better understand the terrible devastation suffered by all sides during war.
I think the personal grief portrayed in Enemy in the Mirror is experienced in all wars including Vietnam. This novel clearly and in a personal way demonstrates how specific events affect families, homelands and generations. People's bravery, fortitude and ability to endure hardship during war is remarkable.
This is an exceptional book. Every detail is well researched with a balanced description of the impacts suffered by families on both sides of the Pacific. It contains a great deal of well-presented background information which helps the mind visualize everything the author is trying to convey. I highly recommend it.
