christ christy (john) is a writer living in chicago. he is an embarrassment to himself and a warning to others. his days are numbered . . . you can see it immediately . . . he's depressed . . . unhappiness drips from every pore . . . he looks like he singlehandedly shouldered the blame for the genocides in Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, and Burundi . . . ropes and knives, bridges and guns send secret signals to guys like him . . . a psychoanalyst with a falsified degree in guattaro-lacanian studies once remarked that christ is an "evil, phallic narcissist with necrophilic tendencies, a schizophrenic solipsist filled with demonic rage, a deranged thirst for revenge, and a wild contempt for the human race; he suffers from total alienation, paranoid and sociopathic tendencies, sexual psychosis, and a fetishization of violence." christy has this to say: "HOLLER IF YOU DOWN TO SMOKE F**K OR RIDE"

An Experimental Format with Good Results!
By Charlie Muck
"A French Book" deviates from previous John Christy novels by firstly taking place during the French Revolution and secondly being written completely as a dialogue between the protagonist and his interlocutors. This is a far departure from his trademark "style" of cynical philosophical and political commentary through the tragic experiences of dispossessed urban yuppies and hipsters.
With that in mind, here is what I thought of it:
Plot 4/5 - The plot is conveyed in two ways --- Through the telling of the protagonist's history and the real-time movement of the protagonist through the hot-spots of the French Revolution. This sort of meta-literary device is a bit difficult to pick up on at first but once understood and intoned the novel flows seamlessly between its threads.
Characterization 3/5 - John has the strangest trend in his character-development --- His protagonists tend to be a little flat and hard to sympathize with but the immediate supporting characters tend to be full of life, transition, tragedy and insight. Unfortunately, "A French Book" follows the same trend. The main character, Antoin, is the 18th century equivalent of an insecure, narcissistic hipster dick. Even through his trials and tribulations it is hard to like the guy. His supporting cast, Marie, Veronica and Sade on the other hand seem to come across as real people who self-actualize throughout the story.
Dialogue 3/5 - A novel composed of only dialogue is going to need a lot to stay fresh and engaging throughout. Christy manages to do this save for two major issues: Long sentence run-on and circular exchanges. On the former, no one I know talks in such long statements --- especially in harrowing situations as the characters encounter. On the latter, Christy captured the way people argue, going back and forth stupidly to save face and one-up each other, but in a narrative it may be best to be more conservative with this technique.
Ending 4/5 - To elaborate on the ending would be to spoil it so I will say that while the climax of the storyline is sort of lacklustre --- literally running down to a convenient plot dissolution --- the final scene, in description, seems in all ways right and good for both the message conveyed and the characters. A narrow win.
All together I enjoyed "A French Book" immensely --- It isn't my favorite John Christy novel by any means but in itself it solidifies John Christy as one of my favorite new novelists. I think by reading "A French Book" many might learn to see him in the same light.

Great Book!
By MaryAnn
The language was beautiful and the characters were achingly believable. This book is a powerful experience. I got completely sucked into reading this book, and couldn't put it down. The characters are all so realistic and believable, and the quality of the writing is outstanding. The story takes a different turn and what started off as a good page-turner becomes an engrossing, compelling, and powerful story of intrigue.
John Christy created a page-turner full of surprising twists. A good book for me needs to have one of two things - great characters or a great plot. This book had both. Highly recommended.

Disturbing
By M. Whaley
I received a free copy of this book.
My concern before reading the book was about the format - all dialogue - and the French Revolution theme. I shouldn't have worried about either of those. The all dialogue format worked much better than I expected and didn't detract from the story in any way. The French Revolution was important to the plot, but even people with no knowledge of it will have the same reaction to the story.
The book is full of very disturbing concepts and is out of my normal comfort zone. I don't enjoy reading about blood pooling (and it certainly doesn't sexually turn me on). This is not a book for children. There were many times I had to put the book down and focus on something else, but if you enjoy disturbing books, this might be a great fit for you. The plot did keep me guessing, though I felt like the ending was rather abrupt.
