Steve Yount was born in Granite Falls, North Carolina. He served in the Vietnam War and earned degrees from Appalachian State University and The University of Texas-Austin. His previous novel, Wandering Star, was published by Ballantine Books. He currently lives Hickory, N.C.

If you only read one new author this year, you need to read this book

If you only read one new author this year, you need to read this book. The story is about how a chance meeting and subsequent events over the course of a year lead to life-altering changes in a young man’s life. The setting is a small town in the Appalachian Foothills of North Carolina in the mid-1950s. The style ranges from funny and irreverent to gritty and biting. What really grabbed me about this book is the author’s unique, non-derivative voice. His masterful use of dialect brings his characters to life and makes them memorable.There is dialog in this book that will have you rolling on the floor laughing, caustic lines that you will want to remember for use in trying situations, and scenes that will make your heart ache. The characters, most of whom live hardscrabble lives, are portrayed honestly and without condescension. Jeff, the main character, balances on that thin line between late adolescence and adulthood, and Yount unerringly portrays the emotional landscape of this period of life. For example this description of a dead Saturday night in a small town brought back my own restless memories: “Each boy, since leaving his home around seven o’clock, had harbored that Saturday Night Feeling, the gut belief that something exciting, something big was going to happen--you just didn’t know what, where or when.”
And then there is Cody, the flawed hero - a fast-driving, hard-drinking, scofflaw of a rock and roll musician whose one fear is “endin’ up fifty-years-old on a barstool talkin’ to some stranger about the land I shoulda bought . . . the woman I shoulda married, you know, the chances I shoulda took, but didn’t.” Not that that is likely to happen to Cody who takes plenty of chances and carries Jeff (and the rest of us) along for the ride. Don’t miss this gem of a tale.

A rollicking good story of small town North Carolina.

GOOD ROCKIN' TONIGHT is a highly readable tale of small-town, rural life in 1950s North Carolina. The author's humor and wit is reminiscent of Clyde Edgerton's - RANEY and will leave the reader laughing throughout. The novel is a must read for anyone interested in the lives of people and the challenges and awkward moments of young men coming of age. The characters are well developed, believable people that will capture the reader's heart. The book is well written and well edited and will not disappoint. The exciting, suspenseful end will leave one asking for a sequel.

Good Rockin' Tonight

You will want to read this new book at least twice. First, for an original and entertaining tale that is faithful to time and place in the 1950s North Carolina mountains. Then a second, more leisurely reading to enjoy how the writer tells the tale. Burgeoning writers take note.
