About the Author
Steve Victorson, EdD. (http://www.stevevictorson.com) has spent his entire adult life at the forefront of the sports fitness and general health and fitness fields. He is the founder and president of Swymfit (http://www.swymfit.com), an innovative water fitness and conditioning center in Boxborough, Mass. He also worked as an exercise physiologist for the Burdenko Water and Sports Therapy Institute just outside Boston, Mass. Dr. Victorson served as a conditioning coach for the U.S. Ski Team during a period that included the 1988 Olympics. In 1999, Dr. Victorson earned his doctoral degree in Human Movement from Boston University. His doctoral dissertation, “The Factors of Winning Among Elite Alpine Ski Racers,” provided the inspiration and impetus for The Champion’s Way. Dr. Victorson hails from Santa Cruz, Calif. He was a collegiate water polo player before moving into the coaching world as a conditioning instructor, and later, going to work with the US Ski Team. He has lived in the Boston area for nearly two decades. Now at work on his next collaborative book with co-author Robert Yehling, Dr. Victorson has blogged about the subjects in The Champion’s Way for the past three years. This is a great read. Athletic Champions have the same traits no matter what sport. This clearly defines what it takes to win. A must read for all young athletes and their coaches.

Necessary for all coaches and parents

I coach football, so when this book was first presented me I was a little leary. How can a ski coach relate to my coaching football and as the parent of a swimmer. I was shocked. Steve in his writing makes the tools for coaching in his book accessible to all sports. I found that many of his expereinces could easily translate not only to football but all sports. His view that wiining doesn't always mean finishing in first is one that all parents, coaches and athletes should look at. After reading this book, wining for my football team meant playing as hard as we could and leave everything on the field. If we could look in the mirror and say we did everything possible and played to our best ability, the score was meaningless, we won. The same for my son, as long as he beats his time every meet, he feels that he has won. This led him to compete at the AAU Nationals in Detroit. As a coach and a parent, please, please, read this book. You will find the champion's way is accessible to all sports and walks of life.

A thorough take on a complex topic

I know Steve from his time coaching on the US Ski Team and can attest that ski racing presents more uncontrolled variables that any sport out there. There are changing weather, light, course conditions and equipment variables for each athletes on each run. And yet, the same people emerge on top, often by mere hundredths of a second. Steve's exploration of all the things that go into the making of champions—from childhood to maturity—is thorough and informative. It's more about revealing the many layers of preparation than cracking a secret code. The book takes on what parents and coaches can do to foster an emerging champion, while also clearly identifying what traits and instincts can't be taught and must come from within. You can read it front to back, or flip to a chapter that interests you and work from there. Either way it's got tons of good stuff for athletes, parents and coaches.
