BOB CRATCHIT IS A LUCKY MAN

Mr. Cratchit couldn't be in better hands having Mr. Elisberg documenting his post-Christmas Carol exploits.

My thumbnail review: I loved everything about it!

This book is incredibly well written, well beyond what I expected. The writing style is seriously good -- the dialogue and descriptions are as if Dickens himself wrote it, with the added bonus of weaving in the smart, witty and extremely funny Elisberg style (check out his blog on Huffington Post). Dare I say this, but I'm not sure I would have enjoyed this as much if the Charles D. himself had actually written it.

Even more important is the very clever story the author constructed. The premise alone is a slam dunk; weaving characters from Dickens' other books into the ghosts and giving them such full blown humor and personalities, is brilliant. Elisberg obviously knows his Dickens. The use of humorous footnotes to inform those of us who are less versed in Dickens' classics is truly inspired.

This story is is tailor made to become a great holiday film. Can't wait to see it!

Not one of my favorites ~ no depth to the characters and scenes.

A Christmas Carol 2 is the sequel to the classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I liked hearing the story of Crachit and what happened to him and also the firm after the death of Scrooge. Crachit loves having the power to help others but unfortunately he hasn't kept an eye on the health of his own firm and has let it's financial health get stuck at the bottom of the barrel - it's really not all his fault and you'll learn about that and about how people take Crachit for a ride because he has a soft heart and is a very giving fellow.

There are quite a few differences between the two books and the 2nd book seems to be a combination of all of Dickens' favorite characters and often is jumbled and I found it somewhat hard to follow.... BUT Elisberg has tried to help the reader stay caught up by including entire sections of notes at the bottom of the page (often using up 1/2 of the page just for the notes) and personally I would of liked to have seen those notes added to the end of the book like an appendix instead of posting them as footnotes.

I think if Elisberg took the time and became a "co-author" (is that possible when the original author has passed on?) this could become a very interesting story. I'd like to see more depth in the characters and the scenes and the story itself. I thought it was neat how Dickens included characters from other books he'd written like Oliver Twist and many others.... but there is no richness to the characters or scenes like there are in many of his other books. This book could use some revamping and the footnotes should be definitely moved to the book to make the story flow better and so it's easier to read.

If you were thinking about possibly giving this as a Christmas gift - I would suggest you read it first and see if you had the same reaction I did. If not, older readers (grandma/grandpa) should enjoy it. I don't think I would read it with kids - it's just to confusing.

Witty, Adorable, Fun

Somewhere in between literature and goofiness, this witty satire of Dickens is a rolicking fun read. You suddenly find yourself guffawing over an aside, or a line out-Dickensing Dickens. I think the gentleman himself would have gotten a kick out of it. I'm a friend of Bob Elisberg's and I must confess I got nervous when he told me he had written a book -- so many times I've had friends write something and I get scared that I won't love it. I shoudn't have worried -- this book is hilarious and a good time is guaranteed. By the way, the fact that it's about Christmas shouldn't deter anybody reading it any time of the year. Funny is funny no matter what the season.

Wow

What an incredible idea! And did you see those illustrations. I love that a world-class expert on emotions and emotional connection has written a children's book! Not only with sound teachings by the end of the book, but also letting children feel heard and seen in their most outrageous tempert tantrums. As a clinical psychologist and a parent, I wished I had had this back in the days when my kids were screaming their heads off. Hats off to you Raphael.

Rallying cry for the book itself!

This book has it all! Text and illustration, grown up as well as children appeal. Reading it aloud is so much fun, adults can experience all over again the frustration of being a little person who has to accommodate to the reality of the adult world, and bubbles with rage. Old feelings resurface and get exorcised as the reader gleefully launches into the tantrum along with the delightful character. Children will love the rhythmic sentences, the quirky and beautiful illustrations, the pleasure of the adults, and will feel profoundly understood and met. A true gem.

My son's new favorite book

The first time I read this book with my 5 1/2 yr old son, he turned to me and said "Mom, I love this book." Now he insists we read it every night, and he follows along with me as we build to a crescendo of the little girl's screaming tantrum. He finds her demands hilarious, and even more so when she calms down and says "I'm after all a patient kid." The cadence, the humor, and the fun illustrations make this book a joy to read with your little one. I love a good children's book, and this is one of best I've come across. [We have the paperback, not the Kindle version]

About the Author
Susan Sattler is a Marriage, Family Therapist who has spent 25 years helping people move toward greater wholeness and unity in their lives. She now also teaches Eastern healing practices throughout California and internationally for The New Century Foundation International. She recently spoke before 100 students in Beijing. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Northwestern University, she earned her MA in education at Stanford University and taught high school for 14 years. She obtained a second MA in clinical psychology from John F. Kennedy University, with a focus on holistic studies. She subsequently taught psychology at the university level, designed a psychology module for an integrated wellness program offered in health clubs, and began a private practice in Marriage Family Therapy. Susan is a member of The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and the Association for Meridian and Energy Therapies. She is also licensed by the state of California to practice hypnotherapy. Susan lives with her husband, artist and designer Gary Newman on two beautiful acres in rural Sonoma County, California. Nature lovers, they enjoy photography, and like to ski, backpack, hike, and swim. They have a son who is an architectural design major at Stanford University, and a daughter who works for an advertising agency in Kansas City.

Insightful, inspiring and from the heart - Read this book!

It takes courage to share one's life story with the world. It takes conviction and deep faith to reveal ones inner life and spiritual journey. Most of all it requires a sincere desire to be of service to others to write the book that Susan Sattler has.

The expression in vogue today is "life is what happens while you're busy making other plans". Certainly true in Susan's case, this inspiring book recounts one person's voyage of self discovery punctuated by loss, life-threatening illness, and a melding of Eastern and Western healing traditions.

It is certainly not just a book about cancer survival, nor is it simply a memoir of meetings with remarkable women and men. It is a practical handbook which includes step by step guidance on how to develop a practice and tap into our own innate healing powers. Not at all doctrinaire or religious in any sense, this tale of embracing impermanence encourages the reader to trust their self to find their own truth in their own way. A great read!

Susan's story is inspirational, real, and very readable. And to add to this, (icing on the cake!) she intersperses her story with a handful of practical exercises (meditation with mudras and mantras) in an easy to follow, step-by-step format that I found very applicable to my life.

I would recommend Susan's memoir to all...no matter what your religious affiliations may be. The teachings of her Chinese-Tibetan spiritual mentor (Yuan Miao) are essentially non-denominational, and rang true to me as an intelligent way to navigate my life and deal with life's challenges. A very worthwhile purchase!

A Moving Story About Facing Calamity With Grace

I really enjoyed this book. I am not the type of person that can read a book I don't thoroughly enjoy. When people ask me what my favorite book is, I always say every book I have ever read. If I don't love it, I can't read it. The story is well told. I found myself tearing up in several places. I was drawn into her process. But mostly I was inspired by the larger idea that courage and gratitude are a practice not attributes bestowed upon the lucky few. I got that, if she can do it, I can too. And regardless of whether we walk the exact same path, the important part is that we put our walking shoes and just start walking. For anyone that loves to get in a good cry while watching movies or youtube videos about amazing people who overcome insurmountable odds, here is your next inspiring good cry!

Rock and Roll on a whole new level

I was given this book in return for an honest review. The Bloodtones are a rock band consisting of a motley crue of members. A sorcerer(Derek), a vampire(David), a werewolf(Will) and two humans(Brian and Bekka). At a gig Bekka sees some colored light kind of things floating up by the ceiling and they dive bomb, and enter her. That is where the adventure begins. Wierd things start to happen, lights and equipment blowing up, bottles exploding and very odd people attacking. After sharing with her band mates what she experienced, they kind of think she's a little bit off. After witnessing for themselves some of the crazy things that are happening, they begin to look for answers. They check with Derek's sorcerer gandpa and psychic aunt and find that the entities that are now residing in Bekka cannot be removed without killing her, they are part of her now and may save her life to protect themselves. The entities are part of a collective, and the collective wants them back, by any means necessary. They have to keep her safe while figuring out how to get rid of the ones chasing them. During all of this a romance developes, and they will discover some secrets about each other. You will see how close they are as a band, and as friends, can they stick together through it all to save their friend? Can her supernatural friends come up with a way to save her? Can they get past things going on in their own lives? This book was fantastic, original, action packed and just plain AWESOME!! Nathan never fails to deliver. I have never read anything like it and I can't wait for more, I always say that about his books, but they really are that good. Gritty, sometimes gorey, but always interesting. He's not pulling punches or holding back, you can tell he puts everything he has into his books. If you haven't read Nathan Squires, you are really and truly missing out. WaAr

Boy, can this man write...

Oh my goodness... This man writes the most amazing stories - truly exceptional.

I am a very fussy reader; I enjoy most books as long as they are well-written and that this author has now written two novels that were un-put-downable is a true feat. I have authors whose pages I watch assiduously to see when their next work is appearing and Mr Squiers has just joined that list. It's a very short list but one that I treasure.

In this tale, we meet The Bloodtones, a death metal band who are starting to become famous, that they are a disparate collection of personalities is no surprise when you learn that we are dealing with a vampire, a therion, a true sorcerer and two humans.

As the story begins we see them on stage performing with the crowd going wild - the lead singer stage dives and is aware of something happening to her... From then on we are led a merry dance through magic and paranormal elements until the climax.

I really don't want to give away too much more of the story, it is too complex, too dark and winding to be able to do it justice in such a short review. Suffice to say, you must read this story for another glimpse into the wondrous mind of Nathan Squiers.

Reread this. Why. Because I can. Ok, so Nathan is up to it again, unlike his newer books, Death Metal is not as dark and twisted but that does not mean it is not dark and twisted. I love the beginning of the mayhem where Bekka first glimpses the shadows. That had me hooked. The story is fast and the heavy metal band was a nice twist from the normal paranormal genre. Would you like the book? Do you like vampires, evil and paranormal, well then yes, you will love this. Do you like a bit of romance on the side? Well then yes you will love this. If you do not like crude language, things that go bump in the night and blood guts and gore, then no, you will not like this. I give it drumbeat full of 4 *!

Really Good Book!

Initially it was the cover that got my attention, but the story within held it. I can't wait for the sequel. This book is filled with so many positive messages of love, forgiveness, relationships, and success. And, yes there's even some drama that will have you saying....You got to be kidding me! I was really surprised by the ending... and will Carl ever find happiness?

Shoes on the Bridge: Meet the Family (Volume 1) keeps you consistently engaged throughout and feeling great at the end! The characters are easy to relate to and a joy to get to know. The carefully developed plot is full of emotional twists and turns that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next... just ask the people who were next to me in the airport while I was finishing it!

The author really displays how God works through people's lives no matter what. So many times we miss the little things or take for granted things that God does in our lives..................there is no such thing as luck. Its God's grace and mercy that causes the most ridiculous, hurtful, disasterous, devastating situations of our lives to mold and make us.

Refining the "Truth"

Our knowledge of culture, scripture, archeology, linguistics, anthropology, astronomy, linguistics, genetics, evolutionary biology, the history of our planet and the evolution of the universe is forcing and will continue to force a reexamination of fundamental doctrines. It is inevitable. We know a lot more today than the bishops of Emperor Constantine's era when they wrote the Nicene Creed. We know much more today about the growth of the Christianity in the 1st century than the bishops of the middle ages.

Michael points out that doctrinal decisions were made by popes and councils based on "literal" assumptions about scripture and information that is no longer true. He raises questions that the hierarchy does not want to discuss because they fear a loss of control and they are afraid that people won't want to know that some doctrines are no longer justified, or that some doctrines must be explained differently because of "new knowledge."

His assertions and questions are prophetic because like the prophets of the "Old Testament," Michael challenges the religious leaders of today. As such this book is a challenge to the hierarchy's authority. Its basic message is that "truth" must change in light of new knowledge and new information. The claim by the hierarchy that the "doctrinal truth" can never change has to go.
Michael has the courage to speak the truth even if the Vatican doesn't want to hear it.

Michael Morwood's book, It's Time, is a masterpiece.

In his usual, forthright, easy to understand language Michael clearly and succinctly offers new ways of looking at Catholic teachings and doctrines. To make his point, Michael uses a variety of sources, e.g., Scripture, the CDF, Catholic Doctrines, The Catholic Catechism and quotes from several Popes. The book is masterfully organized between what we are told to believe about God and Jesus and what we might believe based on new revelations coming from our Universe in this time in history. Anyone who has questions or doubts about Catholic/Christian beliefs and practices could benefit from reading this book. In particular Women Religious who are in any way associated with the LCWR might discover new insights in It’sTime.

Epic Glottis

Any person who believes that he or she knows much about Charles Bukowski will never know all that much without this valuable book by Joan Jobe Smith, who knew him well. I received my copy last Tuesday at about 11am, opened it, read a few lines, and then a few more lines, and finally closed the book at 4pm, on page 82, because this is not a page-turner; this is a book to be relished, to be enjoyed, to be with Charles Bukowski and by extension with Joan Jobe Smith. I've no idea how I came across the book, by the way, nor have I ever met Joan Jobe Smith. If you, as I do, appreciate Bukowski's writings and want to know more about the man, this is the book for you. Just as it is and will remain an important book for me.

Review of EPIC GLOTTIS

This book is proof that Bukowski doesn't get the last word.
A book like this needs to simmer for years before it is written.
Maybe only a woman could have written this book, as a corrective, or as an absolution regarding
how we men can be. There are places in this book that made me wince. Us men are jerks!
Bozos!
Clueless!
And Bukowski led the pack with such a grandiose drunken maelstrom it was fascinating to behold.
And no, I am not going to attempt to dial up the various text book pathologies that Bukowski
was mired in, simply because I have them all, too, and I'm not pointing the finger at myself or Bukowski
because I'm on Bukowski's side! Even if we are morons.
Joan is too sweet a person to have ever hung around Bukowski.
She spent years in his orbit and is still an incredibly nice person (we're friends).
Like they say in AA: We take hostages.
Bukowski took an entire generation of Los Angeles writers down the drain with him. Not Joan.
She survived. I lost all my friends to alcohol and drugs.
But, Bukowski is from an era of America where there were more Characters. More individuals.
Out in Los Angeles, in the 60s ( I now live in New Mexico ) we used to say They turned the USA
sideways and all the nuts fell into California. You could walk down Hollywood Blvd and every other
person was a nut. And the other every other person was someone extremely themselves. It was
quite a sideshow. Now we're all homogenized and it's a better world, right?
In fact, Joan's book is different, too.
It's kinda like some of those people you used to see on Hollywood Blvd. It pipes along
to its own song. Does not bend to convention. I couldn't put it down. In fact, I've read it twice
it's so good. Great in all the ways that make Los Angeles great. That was, or is, my favorite thing
about Bukowski, his genius for capturing the air of Los Angeles, the vibe, his depiction of a certain
pre-War (WWII) sensibility that lasted for decades in Los Angeles. We'd all read his column in the
L.A. FREEPRESS (Notes of a Dirty Old Man) and wonder at WHO was this guy who got it so right?
I've often thought that the 70s were a crazy shiftless period in America. We lost our senses. Maybe
the promises of the 60s blew up in our faces? Then everybody turned to cocaine and disco (not me,
by gawd). Reagan was governor (2 bleeding terms!) -- that'll turn anybody to disco and cocaine (but,
not me, thank the Gawds). I sometimes think only Black people survived the 70s without embarrassment,
but then, didn't they have something to do with disco?
I especially love the honesty in Joan's book.
AND I found out she was friends with Anais Nin ( ! ) and that Anais Nin lived in Silver Lake (boho neighborhood near downtown L.A.) -- Wow !

Well, as we continue to endeavor to attempt to learn how to live in this modern world that continues
to shift under our feet, (like the San Andreas Fault), this book is a deep look back to a time that was.
I'm amazed by it.
And you know, I don't think I've ever seen the contraction "to've" in print before? (ie. to have)
so,
as the Anglo Saxons would say: Eala Joanjobe engla beorhtast [ Hail, Joan, brightest angel ! ]

Nick Adams lived a short and fast-paced life in Hollywood only to die young, and somewhat mysteriously. His friendships with James Dean, Natalie Wood, Dennis Hopper and Elvis Presley are legendary. Nick Adams starred as Johnny Yuma and co-created the iconic western television series, The Rebel, with the famous song by Johnny Cash in 1959-61. Adams was nominated for an Academy Award in 1964 for Best Supporting Actor in Twilight of Honor with Richard Chamberlain and Joey Heatherton. He appeared in film classics Rebel Without a Cause, Mister Roberts, Picnic, Pillow Talk and No Time for Sergeants. Then after his Academy Award loss, he made Godzilla movies in Japan; Monster Zero, Frankenstein Meets the Outer Space Monster, and Boris Karloff’s Die Monster Die in London. Nick and Elvis, with a little help from Allyson

This is a remarkable new book. The Rebel and the King was written in 1956 by Hollywood actor Nick Adams to document his friendship with rock and roll phenomenon Elvis Presley.

Adams, you might remember, played Johnny Yuma in The Rebel television series in 1959-60. Presley, "The King," met Adams on a movie lot in Hollywood. They became fast friends.

Allyson Adams, Nick's daughter, discovered the typewritten manuscript in a trunk of her dad's belongings. Nick died in 1968, when Allyson was 7 years old, and she hadn't opened the box until a few years ago.

When Allyson asked me to read the manuscript, I couldn't believe my eyes. Nick had written a homespun tale of the "other Elvis," an acutely polite young superstar who doted on his parents and tried never to offend his fans. Nick devoted much of his book to eight days he spent with Elvis in Memphis and Tupelo, Mississippi. Nick's charming tale recalls those days of comparative innocence for two ambitious celebrities destined to die young. It's a diary of encounters. Nick talks about introducing Elvis to actress Natalie Wood. He covers in some detail how Elvis bought new furniture for his parents. It's also a walk through the emotion of life. To Elvis, Nick revealed his fear that he wouldn't make it big in movies. To Nick, Elvis shared his regret that fame was pushing him much too hard.

Allyson hurts even today over her dad's untimely and mysterious death at age 36. She and I became acquainted several years ago after discovering a common connection. I'm a Montana native who had written a biography of Jeannette Rankin, the nation's first congresswoman. Allyson, who had lived in Montana for many years, had read my book. It became an inspiration for her stage career in single-woman productions of Jeannette Rankin's life. Allyson also produced a movie, "Peace Is a Woman's Job," in which she played Rankin. It's a whimsical portrayal of Rankin as an icon for pacifism.

I know it was tough for Allyson to pull her father's memories out of the trunk. In doing so, she's given voice to what he couldn't, or least didn't.

I admit to being a bit star struck when I read Nick's original manuscript. Johnny Yuma was one of my favorite TV heroes when I was a young boy watching The Rebel weekly on television with my own dad. It's all the more exciting that 50-some years after the last episode of that series, Allyson has brought her father's unfiltered portrayal of the legendary Elvis to life.

Nick wrote the story on a typewriter borrowed from actor friend James Dean. Yes, Nick ran in a fast celebrity crowd and savored the big time, but his book makes clear that he valued respect, honesty and compassion. Nick Adams personal friendship with Elvis Presley.

Once I started reading "The Rebel & The King", I couldn't put it down, and read the whole book in one evening. Nick Adams wrote about his close personal friendship with Elvis Presley, and the original rough draft of his manuscript is included in the back of the book.

Nick and Elvis had been fans of each other, and instantly became friends when they met. I ever knew that Nick had opened the show for Elvis' 1956 Tupelo concert by doing jokes and impersonations. I had seen some of the pictures from that show, but not the ones taken with Nick's camera. I was impressed that Elvis shared his deeply personal religious beliefs with Nick.

I highly recommend "The Rebel & The King" to everyone, whether you're an Elvis fan or not! Thank you, Allyson Adams, for generously sharing Nick's memories of Elvis with the rest of the world!

Lasting friendships never end

When I found out late one night that Nick Adams's daughter had written a book, I immediately had to find out what it was all about. Being a Nick Adams fan for many years I knew there had to be a story to be told. I was not disappointed. The book entitled "The Rebel and the King is just that. If you are a Elvis fan you will truly enjoy this book. I read it in one evening devouring every word. You see back in 1956 Nick Adams (the Rebel) and Elvis (the king)had first met and they took a liking to one another at once. This book will take you back to that time, and the friendship they both had. From the very first page you will be hooked. It tells of the "real Elvis" when his career first got off the ground. He tells of his love for God,family, his success in Memphis. It even tells the love for his mother, how her favorite dog had died and how Elvis loved his mother so much, he bought her another one named Sweet Pea. This is a must read for Elvis fans and Nick Adams fans alike. You will not be disappointed. Oh! Did I forget to mention that this was written by Nick Adams himself? Nick's daughter had found it in her "Daddy's Box" which is a wonderful story in itself. She felt compelled to share it with the fans. Thank you so much, Allyson, my hat is off to you. Enjoy the journey.

Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days). 7. Chronic feelings of emptiness. 8. Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights). 9. Casey: Don't Ever Call Me Worthless

After I read this book it reminded me why I want to be in love again. The book kept me wanting to know what would happen next and I vividly could imagine the story in my head. A good book keeps you turning the pages and not wanting to put it down... that is what makes a good book and this one is indeed one of those.

A Happy Beginning

A bit of a disclaimer first: I have known the author of this book for a little over 10 years now.

The story Dano tells in his book, "Casey", is indeed inspired by true events and is a wonderful tale of finding a lump of coal and finding inside of it, a diamond that no one else bothered to find in the beginning.

For James, this was Casey. Everyone around saw a dirty, dusty, grimy rock, but upon polishing it, James found the lump shined more brightly than anything anyone had imagined. Sometimes, people become trapped by their circumstances, but James gave Casey the opportunity to thrive and truly be herself. And in that process, he found his own happiness in his altruistic efforts.

I can't wait for Volume 2 and more to see where the white knight goes. He has mountains to climb and metaphorical dragons to slay, but he is well armed and well prepared. I wish our hero the best.
