Scott J. Mahurin has taught for 13 years in private Christian schools and has taught ESOL for three years. He holds degrees from the University of Idaho in History and Philosophy. Mr. Mahurin lives in St. Petersburg, FL and has three daughters and a gray cat who is also female.

Timely word for parents!

Scott Mahurin has written an important book for parents to read, carefully consider, and discuss. We live in a soft culture, and nowhere is this more evident than in the church. Scott writes to Christians who may not be aware of their own parenting style, and he writes to jolt them out of their lethargy. Don't let the satiric style fool you. This is a serious message for serious times. Some formatting issues keep me from giving it a fifth star.

Excellent and provocative read

Scott merges grace, love, and hard words together for parents of boys. He is clearly not afraid to tell it like it is, while adding a shot of humor and pithy insight along the way. Scripturally supported and provocative in this day and age. Would make for good discussions.
Published paper style format, so it is a large-ish book; also has a few typos.

Misses the Mark but well-intentioned

Instead of concentrating on measuring "wussiness" how about we focus on global responsibility, integrity, and achievement in terms other than sexuality. After all, so many daughters are "wusses", too. Yet, what a strange approach to child-rearing and socialization. The cover depicts a boy crying and implies that men showing emotion is somehow the epitome of "wuss". Emotions are what separate humans from animals. What an outmoded, narrow concept of what it is to be a male and human in the rich and complex experience of life. No, calling names is not the answer. Picking on boys is not the answer. Narrowly conceptualizing "manliness" by way of which emotions are displayed (not HOW) is not the answer. If your son is a wuss, perhaps it is because his father (and his mother) have not shown him how to bravely articulate and understand his own emotions, as well as weaving them into his cognition and behavior in a way that is integrative and sophisticated. It is always more commendable, and indeed successful, to focus on increasing good rather than decreasing "bad". Scott J Mahurin uses a big buzz word-style scare tactic to dummy down what appear to be genuine concerns of his, but falls short of a sophisticated discourse.
