Terrorist Organizational Behavior, by Dr. Michael S. Toney

As a method of analysis, organizational behavior is appropriate for characterizing nontraditional entities, such as terrorist organizations. Similar to traditional organizations, terrorists organize into groups (i.e., an organization with culture and objectives), are guided by leaders (i.e., leadership theory), and seek performance (e.g., motivation theory, culture and ideology, and organizational learning). This quantitative correlational research investigated terrorist organizations, exploring organizational behavior and various leadership theories in order to discern predictive elements. The objectives included collecting data, applying statistical models, and analyzing terrorist organizations with the intent of creating preventative counterterrorism-intelligence techniques. The subsequent recommendations may assist intelligence and law enforcement organizations in identifying, understanding, and predicting terrorist behavior based upon organizational behavior, leadership, and performance. This research offers new knowledge regarding organizational behavior and leadership by providing a more thorough understanding of the ways in which these theories apply to the profiling of the behaviors of terrorist organizations. Specifically, the contributions of this research include the identification of: (1) a correlation between the Long Term Orientation of a nation and the performance of terrorist organizations; (2) the preference of terrorist organizations for injury incidents rather than fatality incidents; (3) the lack of correlation between terrorist organizational size and performance; and (4) the differences in performance between terrorist organizations with a predominantly religious ideology and organizations with a predominantly political ideology.

Review
"Awesome...like the layout and content was very good." - Dean James J. Ness, Ph.D., University of Phoenix College of Criminal Justice and Security

About the Author
Dr. Toney has worked with the U.S. Department of Defense for more than 25 year’s. He has supported organizational and process redesign efforts for the operations centers of several U.S. defense organizations such as the Defense Information Systems Agency, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Marine Corps from locations across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. During his tour in the Middle East, he researched the application of organizational behavior and leadership theories in the characterization and performance of terrorist organizations. After conducting an exploratory literature review, he learned how little was known about the organizational behavior, leadership, and performance of terrorist organizations, which prompted his initial research into the development of this book. Existing organizational behavior, leadership, and performance research focused primarily on traditional commercial and government organizations. Research on terrorist organizations tended to focus on the post-psychological effects of terrorist attacks in terms of human and property losses, and activities such as risk management and public health. He also learned the degree that national, organizational, and individual culture affects the behavior of these types of organizations. From this, he was able to construct a framework for understanding the performance of terrorist organizations by researching the relationship between organizational behavior and leadership theories, and national cultural dimensions, which is the objective of this book.

Total waste of time!
By Don Radlauer
This was very possibly the single worst-written book I've ever read--such a bad piece of prose that it was torture to get through. Unfortunately, I felt I had to plow through to the end; after all, I'm a researcher in the field of terrorism and asymmetric conflict, and the book promised that it was ultimately going to present some interesting and important data and conclusions. I should have given up after the first few pages!

Dr. Toney has no idea how to write a book. Or a chapter. Or a paragraph. He's more or less OK at writing individual sentences, I suppose, but that's hardly enough to qualify someone as an author. Paragraphs are not supposed to be random collections of clunky sentences; they are supposed to be organic units of thought that develop an idea. Toney appears to be entirely unaware of this; he seems to have assembled his book by some strange technique involving random copying and pasting, endless repetition of inane definitions of terms, and other bizarre laboratory procedures--anything but actual decent writing.

Apparently one of Toney's ideas was to write each chapter so that it could stand alone--and so, in each chapter he tediously recapitulates what he (badly) expressed in all the previous chapters; he redefines terms (often several times in the same chapter!); he gives a lengthy preamble of what he intends to say in the current chapter; he then presents some actual substance (about which I shall say more anon); and finally he gives a lengthy recap. Needless to say, this is infuriatingly tedious for anyone actually attempting to read the entire book! The whole thing could easily have been reduced in length by two thirds without eliminating any actual content.

After all the pain of reading this absolute clunker of a book, I'm left with the feeling that Dr. Toney actually knows very little about terrorism and terror organizations. All he really did was perform some basic statistical research in an attempt to find some correlations between the "performance" of various terror organizations and factors like "cultural dimension" theory, organization size, religious/secular orientation, and so on. He did manage to find a few correlations; for example, he found a correlation between a society's "long-term orientation" and the "performance" of the terror organizations targeting it. However, he made no effort to explain how the cultural characteristics of the *target* society (as opposed to those of the society that spawned the terror organization) would have any impact on the terror organization's performance--so we're left with no real way to know if he has uncovered something significant, or whether this is just a fluke of the statistics. (After all, if we correlate enough stuff, we're bound to find some "statistically significant" correlations even from essentially random data.) In any case, none of Dr. Toney's correlations appear to be significant enough to have any real predictive value.

In short, there was nothing in this book's data or conclusions to justify the time, effort, and sheer mental agony involved in reading the damned thing. This book is to be avoided at all costs; if you're an Amazon Prime customer and you decide to borrow it at no cost, I would strongly suggest finding something else--anything else!--to read this month. If you feel you *must* read it, I strongly suggest skipping to the last couple of chapters; this will allow you to see what little real data and research is there, and reduce the pain of the whole exercise. Please believe me, though: the whole book is a total waste of time and effort.

Understanding Teorrorists
By Jackie Paulson
Terrorist Organization Behavior by Dr. Michael S. Toney
This book was a complete informational book on how to understand violent acts people create in terrorism. The author has enough research to back up all of his claims.
It is a great reference book. In his example on Table 1: Worldwide Terrorist Attacks from 2005-2008 is truly helpful to read. Looking at the numbers will help you see how bad terrorism really is. It's not like the newspapers report this on a daily basis either. It is researched to give you the statistic you need to see from the United States Department of State (2010). I loved the structure of this book as it is very inductive and gives logical flow of information with statistical evidence. Some chapters are easy to skip through but not irrelevant to what he teaches through his book.
Chapter one discusses the terrorist organizational behavior and introduces you the background to the problem. It teaches us that education on terrorism is the key to understanding why it is so prevalent in the 21st century to become aware of. I felt like I was taking a college class as I was reading it. The follow list is examples to help you to see the profile of the terrorist organizations:
* How components of leadership theory
* Organizational behavior theory
* Span of control
* organizational performance
* organizational culture
* ideology
* human resource management
* financial management

Chapter two demonstrates the framework by presenting two propositions:
Organizational behavior and leadership can describe terrorist organization, leadership and their performance. Culture influences the host and target states in which terrorist organizations reside and that they violently attack.
Chapter three examines the historical context of terrorism.
Chapter four gives theories to understanding the organizations which include:
* organizational
* social
* psychological theories

Chapter five describes the relationship that subsists between leadership theories and terrorism. This is helpful information if you love sociology, psychology or even business.
Chapter six offers the cultural, religious and political facets of terrorism.
Chapter seven presents the research method and design.
Chapter eight details the research variables and the choice of data for testing and analysis.
Chapter nine examines the kinds of statics tests and models implemented in chapter ten.
Chapter ten applies statistical instruments as a part of the research method and design to the hypothesis for the above chapters.
Chapter 11 offers analysis and interpretation of the findings from chapter ten. There are three parts:
* Culture and ideology
* Leadership
* Financing
Chapter 12 presents the findings, implications and recommendations developed from the model, statistical test, and the interpretation of the results.
I believe this is an excellent book for colleges, professors, historians, sociology, psychology majors, and specialized field of study.

EXCELLENT Read!
By Kevin L. Freeman
Dr. Michael S. Toney takes a new approach at understanding and predicting terrorism and terrorist acts by studying the major aspects of organizational behavior in relation to recorded terrorist incidents and the nations or groups responsible for them. What makes a terrorist group tick? What motivates them to harm innocent people, or noncombatants? Why would someone seek out martyrdom? How can we prevent the harming and killing of noncombatants? Anyone with an interest in understanding these principles and the behavioral characteristics that drive them should give this book a good reading at a minimum.

What I absolutely loved about "Terrorist Organizational Behavior" was the extensive research that was obviously put into the conclusions drawn, as well as the extensive documentation of information sources. The book is written very well, introducing first the background, motivations, and goals of the study, then outlining the study's results, and finally leading to conclusions and assessments of the ways in which nations might predict (and thereby prevent) future terrorist attacks. While no solution can be perfect, I think that this study provides some excellent insight in this regard, and even if every conclusion is wrong (which I strongly doubt), the compilation of this information allows the reader to draw his own conclusions. Every aspect of the cultures where terrorism originates (or doesn't originate) is picked apart for the careful reader to not only understand what causes terrorism, but to understand what might prevent groups from engaging in terrorist acts.

What I didn't like about this book was that it seemed to be biased toward left-wing ideology in the way that some information was presented. An example of this can be found in the careful separation of left-wing extremists from what Dr. Toney classifies as traditional left-wing political parties, which he defines with very positive attributes, while lacking that same distinction in defining right wing political parties, many members of which do strive for the same positive principles. I also found it interesting that Dr. Toney quotes a somewhat misleading statement that Jihad originally meant religious war while implying that modern Islam doesn't follow the same principles. I can find no evidence to support this idea as the Koran studied by both Jihadists and modern Islamic believers does call for the extermination of any who refuse to convert to Islam (including noncombatants) - of course, this is also somewhat contradicted in other areas of the Koran, but believers are called to determine which scriptures are more valid, per the prophet Mohammad's written instructions as his own ideals changed throughout the course of his life. These are topics that could be endlessly debated, but the way in which they were presented did not strike me as neutral, as I would think any study of this nature should be.

All things considered, I rate this book at 4.5 stars, and could have easily raised that score to 5 stars if not for the problems outlined above. That being said, it is very difficult, if not sometimes impossible, for a writer to present information in a completely unbiased fashion, but I still felt that Dr. Toney could have striven to play the devil's advocate just a bit more in his representation of various ideals.

This is still an EXCELLENT read, and whether you're actively involved in preventing and/or countering terrorism or you're an uninvolved citizen looking to understand more about the topic, the research and conclusions in this work will be of great benefit to you.
