A Challenging Whodunit

Gail Baugniet weaves a captivating tale through the eyes of insurance investigator, Pepper Bibeau, a strong and tenacious woman whose instincts guide her well. Digging through family records becomes a health hazard for twenty-eight-year-old Pepper as she investigates a possible connection between a suspicious insurance claim for a cousin who fell to her death and a grandaunt's mysterious demise that no one seems to have witnessed. A high-top pink sneaker, an old letter written by a nun in Paris, gossip about bad land... are these clues connected to the deaths, and if so, how?
Baugniet's skillful writing casts a wide net as she introduces us to a complex chain of people and events that don't seem connected. Descriptions are detailed and colorful, and we can easily visualize the characters and settings--even smell whatever is cooking in the kitchen! As the story progresses, new suspects and motives are exposed in a well-paced manner, and we can't help but reconsider our previous choice of "bad guy." Plotted in the spirit of a true whodunit, the twists and turns are logical yet unpredictable, and the last few pages tie up any loose ends. Highly recommended.

A complex whodunit filled with intriguing characters

Gail Baugniet has crafted another complex whodunit filled with intriguing characters. In the second Pepper Bibeau mystery we are taken to Pepper's hometown where we meet the family, learn something of their tangled history, and get an insider's view into their personal issues - not the least of which is alcoholism. While investigating two suspicious insurance claims, Pepper discovers how seemingly unconnected people and events are actually tied to each other, and uncovers secrets that some would prefer she left buried. Baugniet is an up and coming talent in the world of mystery writers. Well done!

A Muscular Whodunit

I’m captured by mysteries that make me work to keep the numerous threads untangled, and Gail Baugniet’s Deadly as Nature did just that. The complicated plot with its many twists and turns kept the detective in me happily puzzling over clues and red herrings. I found the insurance investigator protagonist, bi-racial Pepper, to be interesting and complex; an independent, sharp, vulnerable woman who served in Vietnam and had a son out of wedlock with hunky Detective Rick, who still cares for Pepper. Baugniet masterfully brings the story full circle, from the beginning when a blind lady asks Pepper’s help in clearing up a murder, to the end where the murder is solved and loose ends tied up when…well, it wouldn’t be fair to give it away, would it? Warning: better make sure you’ve got food in the house when you curl up with this scrumptious mystery. Baugiet’s repertoire of and descriptions about food are mouthwatering as she sets the scenes with savory treats that will make you salivate. You’ll want to keep your thinking cap on with this one. Highly recommended.
