Dysfunctional Families? Family Secrets? Not in Our Church!
How many times do we think it can't happen to us? Whatever "it" is. We often go into deep denial. And truthfully, in the rich backdrop of the farming cradle in the Ohio Valley, a peaceful lifestyle seems possible. Highly likely even. At least on the surface.
It's 1973, and you can feel the tension of the women's liberation movement, that is infiltrating the church, as three young women choose different routes to survive in their male dominated world.
Work is Roberta "Birdie" Alexander's inspiration. She wants to work along side of her father in Alexander's Greenhouse and Nursery.
Birdie also has a dream: She's heard the men in her family talking about the falling Dow. But in spite of the economic slowdown, she's determined that their family business will both survive and thrive. If she has her way, her dad's foliage will become the standard for all of Ohio. And she'll back up that promise with hard work.
Work faster and harder was Birdie's motto. She knew it was the only way to get ahead in this male-dominated world called Alexander's. Because, if she works long enough, hard enough, and fast enough, her father will love her as much as he loves her older twin brothers.
Birdie approaches her Christian walk and relationship with her heavenly father in the same way. Hard work allows her to feel secure in her church membership, but so far, her earthly father seems bent on marrying her off. And she doesn't see Romance in her future.
How much will she risk ... to hold onto her own will and self-righteousness?
Will losing her job wake her up? Losing a lifelong friend? A brother? Or will it take losing the very presence of God?
Next we have Sara Brubaker, the secretary for Alexander's Nursery and Greenhouse. She's torn between two worlds. Two-years-old when an Old Order German Baptist couple adopted her, she has become a beautiful woman and enjoys the normal world of fun and fashion.
Should she give all it up and join the Dunkards to truly belong with her adoptive family? Then again, the Anabaptist people dress so old fashioned. Does she really want to look ... Amish?
When she discusses her decision with Birdie, Sara doesn't get the support she expected.
Another blow comes when Sara learns her parents have been keeping something from her, and her father side-steps her questions about the family secret. Was the deception deliberate?
Then there's Irene West, Birdie's lifelong Sunday school friend. Irene misses having a father figure around ... where is he anyway.
In her search for acceptance her skirts get tighter and shorter, which causes Birdie to struggle with the friendship and decide it's her job to shame Irene into acting more like a "Christian." When her tactics don't work on Irene, Birdie decides maybe her Dunkard friend isn't so weird after all.
Will Birdie overcome her self-righteous nature before it's too late--for Irene?
As these young women struggle to find their true identity, and paths in Christ, can they reconcile with each other and their parents? Can they find the courage to grab hold of a new dream and find the love and acceptance they seek?
Inspirational Fiction at its finest, Dreaming of a Father's Love, is written for a woman's encouragement that her opinions are worthwhile. Her dreams are worthwhile. She is worthwhile, and worthy of love.

Review
"Family is a prominent theme of this novel set in the Ohio Valley. Here three young women struggle to keep the families that they have always wanted and to earn the love they crave in their conservative environments. Sharon Lavy lives in southwest Ohio where she is known in writing circles as 'the German Baptist lady'."

From the Author
Did you know that many women do not realize that God intended them to have life long friendships with other women? Not just while they are single and supposedly carefree. That's why Sharon A. Lavy writes Women's Fiction.
In other times and other cultures, the women folk banded together while the men went out into the hostile environment to hunt and provide for the family. Women have always been industrious as well. We read in Proverbs 31 how the virtuous women deals with employees, and deals with the merchant. How she provides for her household, even purchasing real estate.Women Have Emotional Needs: While men can fulfill one kind of emotional longing, only another woman can understand ... well, have you ever seen men talking at the same time and absorbing the gist of the conversation? Oh no, men want you to remain silent and let them do a monologue. No wonder we women shut down. And if we try to interact with them, the men shut down.
By cultivating friendships with other women we can be kinder to our husbands, who's minds work ... well ... let's face it they work funny.Father and Daughter Issues: That certainly comes out in Birdies life throughout this book. Her father does not understand her emotional needs to be close to him. But with her female friend, she can discuss and work through the situation. Sara was able to help Birdie see where she could use a different approach.
I learned right along with Birdie as she recognized her shortcomings. The scriptures say we are all sinners. But how many of us really see ourselves as God sees us? Are we afraid to ask Him to show us?
So many of you have let me know how the characters touched your heart. How you enjoyed watching Birdie, and Sara develop their character arch. That you enjoyed watching their friendship grow. Thank you. They still live on in my heart.
I hope you enjoy reading the novel, Dreaming of A Father's Love as much as I enjoyed writing it.

From the Inside Flap
Stories of Faith, Family, and Friendship, from the Ohio Valley
Lavy chose a time period that is near and dear to my heart, portraying it accurately and with finesse. Her romance is filled with drama as her characters seek what we all want...deeper faith, acceptance within our families and communities, and of course, love. Dreaming of A Father's Love might be a debut novel, but it surely won't be her last. Well done!

In Dreaming of a Father's Love, author Sharon A. Lavy has blessed us! This is a story of a young woman's inability to see her blessings, realize that her decisions make her feel unloved, and her ultimate discovery that walking by faith means trusting God. Within this fiction Birdie, is a template for a sort of every-woman. As we read about her, we can examine ourselves; do we think and act as the word does, or seek God, do we feel that because we know Scripture we know what God thinks about a situation without seeking Him? Unlike many Christian authors who tell us that a character decided to believe, this author shows us step by step all the details that cause one man to claim Christ, others to seek God's forgiveness, and one to realize that instead of loving a person, she made him an idol! Yet the story is told as if we are sitting in Sharon's country kitchen, a log on the fire while she knits and tells us this yarn without looking up to see if we are hearing her, for her only desire is that we hear the Lord!

A tale of two fathers.
By GWeyant
Sharon A. Lavy has written a five star book. One that shows that in the minds of young people whether it today or thirty years ago, it is hard to make your way in life when your fighting your fathers.
All Roberta (Birdie) Alexander wants is to go the local college for a Master Gardner's course. But getting her father to understand is not something that is going to happen if he has his way. His daughter is going away to school, a four year school.
It takes the loss of a loved one, to make Birdie realize that she's
Not just fighting her earthly father, but her heavenly Father a well. She begins to realize just how how much she has to lose.

Life's Lessons
By Alberta Sequeira
Dreaming of a Father's Love is a book of lessons. When people reach adulthood, I hear many of them say that they craved the missing love from their parents growing up. Roberta (Birdie) Alexander is no different trying to compete with her twin brothers for her father's love and appreciation for her hard work with the family's business.
Her life and enjoyment is only in the greenhouses working day and night. Somehow she feels a separation with her father when she struggled to get his attention and praise with what she accomplished.
All of us somehow bypass our mistakes without realizing how we contribute to the confusion without communication. Being a churchgoing woman, and her close relationship with her two friends, keeps Birdie learning each day where her mistakes were hidden.
It's a story of family, love and a true relationship with God. I recommend this read.

Trip down memory lane with sweet debut
By Lisa J. Lickel
Sharon Lavy's debut novel is a trip back in time. I hate to admit it, but I knew all the Helen Reddy songs that Birdie sings.
Dreaming of a Father's Love is a many-layered story of finding love, or realizing that it's been there all along, for Lavy's characters. Growing up in the crazy early 1970s when women were beginning to assert themselves was tough enough in the general population, but when you belong to a fairly strict mainline faith, it's even harder. Birdie wants to make choices about her future for herself, but it's difficult with a father she feels is over-critical and harsh when he really wants the best for her. During the summer after high school graduation all the dreadful events that happen to her family and friends could have sunk her, if not for the deep-seated faith which was her foundation. Dealing with a love triangle, figuring out how to help or deal with her friends, both old and new, and her family help her realize her place in the community in which she lives and wants to stay.
Lavy's story is told in many and occasionally dizzying viewpoints, so readers will want to pay close attention to who belongs to whom. I enjoyed the snippets of life in that era, as well as getting to know a little more about the various faiths in their culture. It was sometimes hard to cheer for Birdie and her decade-older love interest, Dax who was searching for missing family, as their lives and romance seemed to move along pretty quickly from a standstill, but I adored the house and history behind (and inside) that Dax bought and restored. Hopefully future books from Story and Logic Media Group will take a bit more care with proofreading to avoid missing punctuation as I found, but didn't mind too much, in the e-version supplied by the author.
Readers who enjoy a trip down memory lane to the tumultuous seventies and a really special house restoration layered with a search for one's identity, will find Dreaming of a Father's Love a fascinating read.
