About the Author
Laura Roberts is obsessed with sexy stories, political satire and religious epiphanies. Having published several books on sex and one on politics, she's debating whether to fully shun herself from polite conversations with the inevitable conclusion to this trio. For now she'll stick to humorous erotica with her fictional take on life in the sex trade with her latest novel, Naked Montreal. As the author of the quirky "V for Vixen" sex column for one of Montreal's alternative newspapers, Roberts witnessed a variety of sexcapades during her time on the beat. Armed with a degree in Creative Writing from Concordia University, she seamlessly blends fact and fiction about this Underground City to create work that has been described as both sassy and insightful. Laura currently helms the literary salon Black Heart Magazine, writes and publishes humorous erotic fiction at Buttontapper Press, and sweats out her summers with her artist husband and literary kitty in a château in Austin, Texas. Not Your Typical Sex Column

It'd be wrong to compare Laura Roberts (aka the "Vixen") to the likes of Carrie Bradshaw or Dan Savage. Whereas those are sex writers, Roberts is writing about sex. The difference is that her "V for Vixen" column is journalism first, with an emphasis on sex second.
That's a big part of why I, a straight Midwestern male who isn't exactly the target demographic for sex columns, enjoyed "The Vixen Files" so much.
I think the spirit of this collection of Roberts's Montreal Hour columns is best summed up in her "Thinking Outside the Box" article:
"I'm annoyed that sex news is considered 'soft' news that can be pushed to the back of the paper. That it's perceived as unimportant, and lumped in with escort ads, even when it has nothing to do with that side of sexuality. Sex news often seems to be a part of the 'pink ghetto,' where the work is traditionally done by women and, as such, highly undervalued and underpaid. I also find it odd that sex-related news is really only offered on a regular basis by such explicitly sexual publications as Playboy, despite the fact that sex news clearly affects and holds an interest for all humans."
Don't get the impression this is stuffy writing. Roberts lives up to her "Vixen" name with lively, frank riffing on all manner of topics. She wrote these columns, after all, in Montreal, the "Sin City of the North."
That means trips to burlesque houses, going undercover at an Internet sex camera business, probing the psychology of sending a stripper in your place at a class reunion and more. See what I mean? This is writing about sex, not sex writing.
Which is another way of saying, "Read up." I have to agree with the Vixen on that point mentioned above. Why confine this kind of journalism to the "pink ghetto" or pornography? Because people don't consider it "real" journalism?
Changing that perception starts with columns like "V for Vixen," especially the harder journalistic entries in the latter half of "The Vixen Files." It's unfortunate the Montreal Hour ceased production, but at least we live in an age where out-of-print material can be found in e-books.

I enjoyed Laura Roberts witty wording and frank honesty. I really wish I had known about her column while it was still around. Thankfully, her website still exists!

Sex in Montreal

This is a pretty entertaining book. However, if you expect to find Henry Miller type sex scenarios, you will be disappointed. This book is witty, intelligent, thought-provoking and humorous. It also provides good advice. Laura Roberts was a sex columnist in Montreal's weekly paper, Hour. (How does one get such a job? I never saw one advertised.) She had her regular readers, but then the paper went out of business and, well, there was no more sex in Montreal. But now sex is back in the form of this splendid book which features Laura's "V for Vixen" columns. I enjoyed this book and am happy to recommend it.
