What in the world did I just read? ***Spoiler alert***

Okay. Okay. What just happened here? Here is my review and its not pretty.

Roni meets Jake through her cousin Kara. Kara is in love with Aubrey but he's not interested in her. Aubrey has a sister, Pam, who has a boyfriend Druce, who is on the down low. Aubrey and Pam are the children of Jake. Aubrey works for his dad, Jake. Druce also works for Jake, but Druce wants Jake's son out of the way so that he can have a bigger stake in Jake's business. There is also Troy, he's homosexual and secretly having sex with Druce.

Jake and Roni are hooked up by Pam and Kara. They meet and Jake just has to have Roni and the hook up the first night they meet. They date and overtime Jake falls for her and Roni falls for him.

Here comes the insane part: Druce wants Troy out of the way so he manipulates Troy and Pam. He even asks Pam to have a threesome with Troy and then smacks her when she refuses. Pam doesn't leave him. Oh no she stays.

When all of Druce's attempts to remove Aubrey from his position through marriage to Pam fails he decides to frame Aubrey. He convinces Kara to put cameras in Aubrey's home so the Troy can seduce him but Aubrey isn't gay so it fails. Kara agrees to help Druce because she loves Aubrey so much she wants him to fall hard in life so that she will be there to help him. WHAT KIND OF NON SENSE IS THIS! I wanted to stop reading then but I paid money for this book! Druce believes Jake hates homosexuals and will fire his son if he sees him having sex with a man. Maybe I missed something but I don't recall anything written about Jakes dislike of homosexuality. It's just another bit of crazy added to an already crazy book.

In the mean time Jake's ex wife, Dena and mother of Aubrey and Pam returns. He left her after he caught her in bed screwing another man 14 years ago. Jake still finds Dena attractive and one night when she visits Pam Jake wakes to her giving him oral sex. Jake wants to have sex with her and forgets about Roni. He wants his cheating despicable ex so bad that just when it's about to happen Dena mistakenly calls him by another man's name and he doesn't have sex with Dena. He leaves and goes to Roni and tells her what happened. She's a little upset but because he's a good man (according to her) she forgives him even though he is clearly still in love with Dena 14 years later.

Moving forward, Troy is killed by Druce and Pam is with him when he does; however, Druce tells Pam to say she did it and to call the police! She agrees to this mess!!! And calls Aubrey and he comes over but takes the blame and is sent to jail while DRUCE IS FREE. SHE DOESN'T TELL ANYONE THAT DRUCE KILLED TROY UNTIL SHE IS ASKED BY RONI AND JAKE. REALLY? That's just nuts! And she supposedly loves her brother.

The book ends with Aubrey being freed because Roni's sharp eye as an attorney. Kara needed to be slapped and so did Pam, but that doesn't happen.

Pros:

Not bad on the grammar.
Great sex scenes!

Cons:

Roni should have given Jake hell for cheating or left him but she has sex with him later, unprotected. Yeah that makes sense??? I can live with a not so happy ending and his cheating should have ended it sexually.
Pam should have been slapped or reprimanded by someone. She let Druce treat her like crap, with only one break out moment of clarity(when she slapped Druce). And that's wasn't for him killing someone.
Kara's character made no sense, she was nuts.

A good effort but something is missing....

Ms. Cachitorie is a very good writer, but since "loving the headman", the last two books have just missed the mark in some way. The story was good and flowed better than the last book, however, there are several big no-nos that a romance novel should ever have.

****spoiler ahead*******

One, is that you don't have the H cheat without redeeming himself and giving a decent grovel to the h. And, if the reason the H cheats is because of his strong feelings for the ex-wife than there goes the story because how am I going to believe he is in love with the h. Actually, the way the book ends, I'm not even sure if the H or the h believes he will stay faithful. That's not my idea of a romance.

Also, you don't write a h who turns into a mary-sue and accepts the H back one day after he broke her trust. And, her explanation to herself is no man is perfect and she continues to sleep with him, after he just came back from doing whatever with his ex-wife. I can't relate to a h who acts like she has no other options and believes she can't find a decent man...wth!

You also don't write the H having stronger feelings for the ex-wife than the h. And, you don't have the H express thoughts about the ex-wife during the s***x scene like as if she is the best thing he's ever had. That was the biggest wtf moment for me. Especially, since he has been smexing the h regularly.

Was this book the worst I have ever read? No, but Ms. Cachitorie can produce something much better.

Do not waste your money

I wish I could have given this book zero star. When I purchase a romance novel I need the hero to be utterly in love with the heroine. I need to have no doubt in my mind that he loves her; this book left doubts in my mind. He was still in love with his ex-wife that cheated on him fourteen years ago. I usually enjoy this author's books, but since the book "Loving Her Soul Mate" everything since then sucks. There were other things in this book that completely turned me off. The hero's daughter boyfriend had sex with a guy without a condom, and a couple hours later had sex with her also without a condom. Really? I was so disgusted with this book that I stopped reading and got a refund.

Jonathan Bennett is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University. He has published extensively on early modern philosophy, ethics, metaphysics and the philosophy of language.

David Bennett is a futures trader living on the Gold Coast in Australia and author of Day Trading Grain Futures: A practical guide to trading for a living. His formal career spanned computing, teaching and human resource management, but his passion is trading. "For many years I tried every trading technique I heard about, with indifferent results, but then I got into day trading futures - and I've never looked back!" Be Popular Now is a great read, and not just your ordinary "self-help" book. This is more of a work book to help you take the steps needed to be more outgoing and really bring out yourself( not someone you can't be) in any social situation or environment. Laced with psychological research and concepts allows the reader to fully understand the importance of each lesson. The relatable stories and examples are what make these lessons stick, you may not remember the exact names or whatever chapter that lesson came from.. but because of these stories the concepts and their significance will come to you once you're put in the situation.
I referred to this as more of a "work book" because at the end of each chapter there is homework aimed towards getting you out there and bringing yourself out by using what you just learned. This may seem stressful if you're intimidated of leaving your comfort zone, but let me tell you.. this process is step by step and lets you build yourself up without teaching someone how to swim by pushing them into the deep end.

Even if you aren't popular or don't want to be...

I was amazed at this book and how I found myself reading about topics that I could use, even for not wanting to be popular. The most fascinating things that I learned from the book included the hard wiring we learn as kids and how we sometimes can't get out of what has been taught to us to change our lives. This book used the model of acting like a celebrity to eventually feel as though you could be one, or at least live like one. The rut that I found myself in was explained in this book, and the way the brain operates from neuroplasticity, along with many other techniques and thoughts that really made be think. My only recommendation is the book could have a broader title, because there are more great things in it, not just for being popular. I was really surprised. Great book.

Not Your Typical Sex Column

It'd be wrong to compare Laura Roberts (aka the "Vixen") to the likes of Carrie Bradshaw or Dan Savage. Whereas those are sex writers, Roberts is writing about sex. The difference is that her "V for Vixen" column is journalism first, with an emphasis on sex second.

That's a big part of why I, a straight Midwestern male who isn't exactly the target demographic for sex columns, enjoyed "The Vixen Files" so much.

I think the spirit of this collection of Roberts's Montreal Hour columns is best summed up in her "Thinking Outside the Box" article:

"I'm annoyed that sex news is considered 'soft' news that can be pushed to the back of the paper. That it's perceived as unimportant, and lumped in with escort ads, even when it has nothing to do with that side of sexuality. Sex news often seems to be a part of the 'pink ghetto,' where the work is traditionally done by women and, as such, highly undervalued and underpaid. I also find it odd that sex-related news is really only offered on a regular basis by such explicitly sexual publications as Playboy, despite the fact that sex news clearly affects and holds an interest for all humans."

Don't get the impression this is stuffy writing. Roberts lives up to her "Vixen" name with lively, frank riffing on all manner of topics. She wrote these columns, after all, in Montreal, the "Sin City of the North."

That means trips to burlesque houses, going undercover at an Internet sex camera business, probing the psychology of sending a stripper in your place at a class reunion and more. See what I mean? This is writing about sex, not sex writing.

Which is another way of saying, "Read up." I have to agree with the Vixen on that point mentioned above. Why confine this kind of journalism to the "pink ghetto" or pornography? Because people don't consider it "real" journalism?

Changing that perception starts with columns like "V for Vixen," especially the harder journalistic entries in the latter half of "The Vixen Files." It's unfortunate the Montreal Hour ceased production, but at least we live in an age where out-of-print material can be found in e-books.

I enjoyed Laura Roberts witty wording and frank honesty. I really wish I had known about her column while it was still around. Thankfully, her website still exists!

Sex in Montreal

This is a pretty entertaining book. However, if you expect to find Henry Miller type sex scenarios, you will be disappointed. This book is witty, intelligent, thought-provoking and humorous. It also provides good advice. Laura Roberts was a sex columnist in Montreal's weekly paper, Hour. (How does one get such a job? I never saw one advertised.) She had her regular readers, but then the paper went out of business and, well, there was no more sex in Montreal. But now sex is back in the form of this splendid book which features Laura's "V for Vixen" columns. I enjoyed this book and am happy to recommend it.

About the Author
Dr. Kara Kockelman, P.E., is a Professor of Transportation Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin (U.T. Austin) and holds a PhD, MS, and BS in civil engineering, a Master’s of City Planning, and minors in economics from U.C. Berkeley. Her research emphasizes the statistical modeling of traveler behaviors and urban systems to anticipate the economic and other impacts of different transport investments, policies and practices. She teaches courses in transport economics, transport data acquisition and analysis, probability and statistics, and the design of ground-based transportation systems. She is an author of over 100 peer-reviewed papers and over 50 technical reports, with more information provided at http://www.caee.utexas.edu/prof/kockelman/public_html/resume.pdf. Ms. T. Donna Chen, P.E., is a Ph.D. candidate in Transportation Engineering at U.T. Austin’s Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering and holds a ME in civil engineering from U.T. She has conducted research in the areas of transportation economics, transportation energy, traveler behavior, and safety, and has instructed college-level courses in statics and dynamics. Austin), and a Texas science teaching certificate as part of U.T. Austin’s UTeach teacher training program. Her research emphasizes high-speed passenger rail, bicycling, neighborhood electric vehicles, and the economic impact of freight investments. Mr. Brice G. Nichols is a graduate student researcher in U.T. Austin’s Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. He has been involved in a wide variety of research projects, helping develop the Project Evaluation Toolkit for sketch-level demand modeling and comprehensive transportation project and policy evaluations, along with a tool for life-cycle analysis of different land use patterns’ energy and emissions impacts. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Texas A&M University.

Great book, horrible binding!

Terrific reference text that adequately explains economic concepts while not making the mistake putting civil engineers to sleep with a bunch of graduate level chapters on demand curve analysis, elasticities, and the calculus of budget constraints (see Transportation Economics by Patrick S. McCarthy as a "guilty" example).

That said, I was tempted to take off a star or two in the rating for using the cheapest paperback binding on the market (for a $40 book no less!) complete with those annoying, shiny cover pages that curl up almost immediately upon opening.

I would have gladly paid a few dollars more for a hardback.

excellent!

This is a marvelously written story - a taut and believable thriller about crime and corruption in Los Angeles, at a time when most of the law enforcement in that city were corrupt. It's also an excellent perspective on what life was like for gay men and lesbian women in the 1950's - and what it would remain for almost 50 years thereafter. Johnson is a master storyteller - the Doug Orlando tales are as good as they get in this particular genre - and this one will satisfy any reader. It's a shame that Amazon isn't marketing Johnson's books so that they reach a wider readership - there are a lot of gay men who are looking for good stories that aren't just silly romances but that have credible, and substantial, gay protagonists. This one is highly recommended.

Couldn't put it down!

I just finished the second book (THE BLACK CAT) in this series and can't wait for the third one. The characters that Johnson has created will embed themselves in your imagination, and you will not be able to stop caring about what lies ahead for them. Paul, the closeted Asst District Attorney is not your usual stoic, all-knowing detective sort. He's torn between doing what is right and what is best for his career, and his personal life is complex and wrenching as he struggles to remain in the closet for the sake of his ambition. This is a gem and THE BLACK CAT(in my opinion) is even better. Read them both -- you won't be disappointed!

Riveting new genre suspense novel

This was such an enjoyable read! Not only a great mystery novel, but incorporating a meticulously researched 1950's Los Angeles with a completely original theme, keeping the sexy parts very fresh. (There is very little written about L.A. in this genre from this time period, so it was a very refreshing read.) I never get through a book in a couple of days, but I did this time. It's like the pages were turning automatically for me and when I finished, I was ready for the next book in the series. Great find, thank you Amazon!

Very Unique Story

This book has a very interesting plot. Sabrina has spent the majority of her life locked in a psych ward where she was constantly told she was crazy. Now she is out and living in the real world with her grandfather, Carl. It is very interesting to read about her having to adjust to the way things work. Things we don't even think about are things that she does not understand; in fact her first obstacle is trying to order food at a restaurant. In lock up the kids are not given any choices in life and having a menu with multiple choice makes her have an anxiety attack. Even something as simple as being able to go outside and choosing where she can go causes her a lot of anxiety.
Sabrina has horrific dreams in which her older brother Devon is always demon-like and killing people. The most prominent of these dreams is the one in which she sees the plane crash which killed her whole family and it is caused by Devon killing the pilots. These dreams are why she has been locked up the majority of her life. After Sabrina goes to live with her grandfather she still has these dreams but instead of being the same few dreams she begins to dream of strangers and new acquaintances being killed. Throughout the story Devon is always so scary for Sabrina despite everyone saying he isn't real. The problem is that the dreams Sabrina is having start coming true which makes it seem that Devon must be real.
Then Riley comes in to her life and helps her to cope with her new world. Riley is a friend and employee of Sabrina's grandfather and the two of them are drawn to each other immediately. He helps her to readjust to the world but he also has secrets of his own that tie him to Sabrina. Their relationship is very sweet and he is just the person Sabrina needs to help her heal.
I really enjoyed much of the book. Sabrina is a great character and you can't help but be drawn in to her story emotionally. She has so much to overcome once she is out in the real world and the things that cause her the most anxiety are things that most of us wouldn't think twice about. The relationship between Sabrina and her grandfather, Carl, is very sweet. Here is this older man who has been single most of his life and he agrees to take in the granddaughter he has never met and who is `crazy'. He provides her with both a home and a family. It is very endearing to see him become a real grandfather to Sabrina. The thing I enjoyed the most about the book was Devon. Even at the end of the book you are left wondering if he is real or just a figment of Sabrina's imagination. It leaves you wanting a sequel so that you can find out the real story of Devon.
While I enjoyed this book and its unique story there were definitely some issues that I had with the book. The first and most prominent is the fact that the book could really use more editing. There were several instances where it seemed that the author was trying to rewrite a sentence but did not remove all of the words that needed to go. Even a simple reading of the new sentence should have been enough to spot the problems. The other issue I had with the book has to do with content. I am very conservative and believe that teen books should not have adult themes. This book contains a lot of extreme language and the relationship between Riley and Sabrina is very sexual. I understand that this does not bother most people but to me it takes away from the story. I believe if the author took some time to at least do another edit the book could be much better.

Crazy or Haunted by the Ghost of her Brother?

I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the aspect of using dreams and mental illness as a vehicle to advance the fear that the author is trying to arouse in the reader. It is a common vehicle, but it is used well and effectively.

I appreciate the characterization of Sabrina as she begins to try and interact with a world from which she has been separated for nearly all her formative years. The child-like way she approaches tasks that the reader most likely takes for granted is well illustrated; the most "normal" of tasks seem daunting for Sabrina and luckily she has Riley to hopefully make her fit in a little bit better.

Her friendship with Riley was odd for me at first as it was a little too immediate, but he has a backstory that helps smooth that over some. However, I would think that with Sabrina's past, there would be a little more reluctance to admit someone, even Riley, into her confidence so quickly.

I was intrigued by the mystery of Devon. It is difficult to discern exactly what or who Devon is: Is he a delusion from Sabrina's mind? Is he some paranormal influence in Sabrina's life? Can he hurt her or those she loves?

Overall, I liked the story. I was drawn to the scary story, although I wouldn't put this book in the "terror" category, it is haunting. The writer's style is choppy in places and could use some polishing, but she accomplishes the telling of the story sufficiently here.

First, let me say that I really enjoyed reading this story. I think that mental illness, in general is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. I liked the way the author used Sabrina's so-called mental illness to convey her story. The story is believable enough that I could see someone being misdiagnosed as mentally ill vs. having precognitive dreams, b/c society in general is willing to accept that a person is crazy, but NOT that the human mind has the ability to do things we may not always understand.

I would have liked to have known a little more about Devon, such as what previous waking event would have made Sabrina so willing to believe that he was evil. I also felt like I was missing something with the backstory of her life. I just couldn't put my finger on it.

I also think that the instant willingness to share so much with Riley, so fast, was not as believable, considering that she was so private with everyone else. I loved how the author took the effort to describe the characters in such a way that I got a good picture of them in my mind.

I am really hoping that this story continues with another book, because I am curious to see how these characters develop. I am also very curious about whether Devon is truly evil, and haunting Sabrina. Overall, this was a fun, easy read, and I felt that it would be appropriate for an older teen.

Upon receiving this book my spiritual foundation had been set with many experiences naturally unfolding. If one allows their spirituality to naturally flow you will be guided to where you need to be. My path led me to this book and to Rise' Harrington. She is a wonderful soul, teacher and friend. Meeting the author prior to the discovery of this book was a natural fit and pushed me forward into new discoveries and learning on my spiritual path. This book is also a great guide to go back to as needed on your spiritual journey.
