About the Author
MATTHEW NICKEL holds a PhD in literature from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His writing on American and British literature has appeared in journals and scholarly volumes such as North Dakota Quarterly, Ernest Hemingway in Context, Reading Roberts: Prospect and Retrospect, and Durrell and the City: Collected Essays on Place. He is also a poet and editor. His most recent anthology of poetry is Kentucky: Poets of Place.

All readers of Hemingway can learn much from Nickel's work

Although Catholic influences in Hemingway's fiction have been remarked upon at length, until this book I had yet to read a comprehensive Catholic reading of Hemingway's greater body of work. Here at last, arrives what has been long overdue: a great deal of Hemingway's Catholic vision unified under one reading. Nickel's analysis is sharp, incisive, and closely bound to principles of close reading. While some of his readings may initially seem problematic to one unfamiliar with Hemingway's Catholicism, Nickel's arguments always pull back to the text and emphasize the particulars. His dedication to particularity is reinforced by resolute scholarship, and these two elements harmonize to produce some crucial recognition. The careful and expansive attention to textual detail open up previously unforeseen ways of reading Hemingway's nuances, making this work a fertile ground for Hemingway studies to learn and evolve upon.
While the arguments can be somewhat high-concept, the prose is highly readable. The ideas should be appealing and fresh to Hemingway veterans yet thoroughly accessible to newcomers. Hemingway's Dark Night is outstanding. The research is meticulous and the commentary doesn't reach beyond the information uncovered in the research. There are several reference to Stoneback's research, an avenue that is full of insights that are thoughtful and comprehensive. The references to the intertextulities reveal that the writers of the time referred to each others lines of inquiry and exposition to find points on which they agreed. The read is very enjoyable and reassuring that there are analysts and researchers on whom we can rely.
