About the Author
Stifyn Emrys is a veteran journalist and educator who has written on subjects as diverse as history, religion, politics and language. He has served as an editor for fiction and non-fiction projects, and his first book, “The Gospel of the Phoenix,” was published in the summer of 2012. The present work was published shortly thereafter. The author has lectured occasionally on the pagan origins of Christianity and continues to research the development of religious traditions. He has worked as an editor, columnist, educator and reporter. He lives in California with his beautiful and talented wife, reclusive stepson, one rather vocal yet personable cat and one hyperactive, somewhat neurotic dog.

A pithy yet eloquent dissertation on the need for a reasonable alternative to monotheism and belief in general. I first came across Emrys' work in Godless Paganism and thought I'd read more. I was not disappointed. I'd recommended this for its clarity and humor.

Aside from some typos an EXCELLENT book!

When I first began to question the God of the Bible and the Bible itself, it was back in the year 2000. After questioning and researching and questioning more and researching more, what I discovered led me to walk away from that God and the Bible. It took over a year of research. I was going to write a book on my findings, but now I don't have to. This book captured practically every insight I obtained on my own quest and then some. This man is not coming against the reality of a God. He's questioning the one we've been taught should not be questioned, in fact all religions who propose a belief in a monotheistic God. It's not for the leery. It's not for those who cannot get beyond the possibility of other ways of thinking. I get it. I know what it feels like to wonder if questioning is right or wrong. I've been there. It's a scary idea. To walk away from a God I had believed in for 21 years was difficult, but I was ready to question. I had to. I had no choice. The answers I received from those in the clergy could not reconcile, to my satisfaction, the contradictions I had discovered. I was left with the conclusion that they didn't really know anything at all, and that was the final nail in the coffin of my Christian path (not to mention how many of my so-called 'friends' treated me as a result of my decision.) I do believe in a creator God/Goddess. I just cannot accept the monotheistic portrayal of that creator, be it Yahweh, Allah, or any other monotheistic religious belief. I chose to question because I was ready. If you're not ready to do that, this book is not for you. If you are, get ready. The insights presented here are based on logic and psychology. As I read this book I felt like this author had read my mind during my quest, listened to conversations I'd had with friends who also questioned. My insights that I came up with on my own are echoed in this book. As a result all I can say is: It's not just me who thinks this way. If you're ready to question, I highly recommend this book.

Excellent resource for people who are questioning!

Most of the books that I have read that explain why people have left Christianity or that critique Christianity in the modern world tend to be angry and bitter. There should be no wondering why, since many people experience significant emotional and/or mental abuse at the hands of authoritarian leaders and cult-like groups (not all to be sure, but too many).
Requiem for a Phantom God (hence Requiem) is an exception to this generality. The tone of this work is generally quite gentle and peaceful, particularly in the opening chapters. The author, operating under the pseudonym Stifyn Emrys, has clearly thought at great length about the questions and criticisms concerning Christianity in America today, and he provides clear and simple assessments, answers, and perspectives, all coming from his personal experience in wrestling with the questions. Although this is not an academic work, the author has obviously read widely; my major criticism of the book is that it provides no bibliography for those who might like to follow in the author's footsteps. Still, Requiem constitutes a concise story of the author's journey, one which can be of great service to other people who are questioning the dominant ideology of our time.
Of all the books I have read in this arena, I found Requiem to be the most enjoyable. I did not attempt to read it in one sitting, preferring to digest it one piece at a time. And every time I picked it up (or picked my Kindle up), I started and finished with a smile on my face, not because I agreed with Stifyn on every point, which is unlikely in any case. I smiled because I enjoyed reading about his process, which in many ways mirrored my own. And in reflecting on his questions and answers, I saw my own struggle, now long past, and knew that I had uncovered a friend.
I recommend this book to anyone who is examining their religious faith and commitment, but also to those who are rock solid in theirs. It can serve as a guide to some, but also as a sign-post to those of differing views in that it allows them to understand people who choose other paths.
