Charming; a treasure!

I've been fortunate enough to have taken Ray's dulcimer class recently and was pleasantly surprised to find this wonderful book about Ray and Shirley Jacobs! They are, in my humble opinion, a national treasure, and this book does a terrific job explaining what makes them so through the accurate and entertaining descriptions of how to make this unique instrument. The photos and illustrations take the reader step by step through the process with clarity and wit; a must for lovers of roots music, hand-crafts,and authentic American ingenuity!

Wow! What a find this book is - for any teacher, student, lover of music - that's all of us! I've heard Shirley and Ray play on the instruments he makes and the sound is surprisingly luscious. Fourth graders can make these instruments; anyone can. The instructions are detailed, step-by-step, and there is a good photo for each step. And when you have your instrument in hand you will even be taught how to begin playing it. Ray and Shirley Jacobs are well-known in their area for their performances, simple life-style, and generosity.

This is a book on how to build folk dulcimers designed by Ray Jacobs. It's wonderful to read if you like to make folk instruments, as I do. Good directions, plenty of photos , plans and explInations for anyone with a modest workshop to build these funky cardboard and wood instruments I expensively. The author also gives sources for strings and tuning machines, which is a nice touch. Stories about Ray are scattered thru
Lug hour the book too. It's interesting just to read it.

Inspiring story for cancer patients or anyone in need of hope.

When all you need is a glimmer of hope to hold on to it's nice to read a story that gives you one. I am a mother dealing with my second round of cancer and I loved DeAnna's very honest and heartfelt story that deals with the realities of life and life with cancer. A great read.

Thank you for sharing, thank you for fighting and most of all thank you for being a role model to other parents who are battling to see their own families through the hardest of times when they themselves are the one that is ill.
I am sad to learn today that you have gotten bad news but I know you are surrounded by all those you love and the hundreds of people that love you so much.

Jonathan Dodson (M.Div, ThM) is the founding pastor of City Life church in Austin, Tx which he started with his wife, Robie, and three children. How A Timid Woman Finally Read A Book About Evangelism

At a time when winsome words and an irenic spirit is so desperately needed, Jonathan Dodson is not afraid to speak truth in love in this little gem of a book. I am not an evangelist and I do not have the gift of evangelism, but Dodson is real and compelling in a way that inspires me to become more evangelistic, and that actually scares me. But that fear is just my own weakness--which Dodson reveals so well.

I think one of my favorite sections is where he shows that evangelism is not proselytizing. Dodson says:

"Proselytizing is motivated by recruitment... Whatever is of greatest value to us motivates our proselytizing. Depending on your values, Christianity may have its strongest expression in a political party, a moral code, a view of the book of Revelation, form or denomination of church, or doctrinal stance. Notice that none of these are focused on Jesus. We all recruit to what we think is most important."

This is very important to me because over the last eight years or so I've seen more proselytizing then actual evangelism. More people interested in getting other people to adopt their way of thinking on an issue then speaking about Jesus and the truths of the gospel. I partook of this myself, so it's not like I don't bear part of the blame.

The rest of the book is a great little evangelism primer. Dodson goes through what he calls "five evangelistic concerns."

Preachy evangelism
Impersonal evangelism
Intolerant evangelism
Know-it-all evangelism
Shallow evangelism

I appreciated that Dodson does not get preachy or chastising in his discussion of the above categories, he is tender yet firm with the reader. This is probably what makes him a good evangelist--he joins a pastoral care for people with truths that need to be said at the right time in the right way. In each of the above sections he tells an evangelistic story using the concept of what he calls "gospel metaphors" which illustrate different ways of talking to people about Jesus.

And for timid people like me, Dodson talks about the security we can have in the gospel alone. Although he rightfully encourages evangelists to read apologetics books, he points out that we don't need to be read up on all the best apologists to evangelize with deep humble gospel dependence and conviction. This really encouraged me:

"However, the gospel alone, acts as a grand apologetic addressing the deepest of life's questions including: the value of creation, the problem of evil and suffering, the existence of God, the hope of salvation, the nature of God and man, and the role of faith. Through apologetics the gospel has been proven to be intellectually credible and existentially satisfying for many people across many cultures. The gospel provides a coherent, rational view on the world that provides intellectual security. It makes sense of a world where things are not as they are supposed to be."

Here are some areas where I connected with Dodson on a heart level:

"While we may not have the ability to answer every question, Jesus does give us the ability to always be secure in our faith. Disciples who are humbly secure in Jesus are compelling. That kind of faith is an apologetic in itself. When difficult questions are raised and doubts surface, we need a security deeper than our intellect and stronger than our persecution."

and

"You mean an author of two books about the gospel loses faith in the gospel? Oh yes, every single day, which is why I'm so deeply moved by God's enduring approval and love. I abandon it in a moment for the slavery of human approval, but still he loves me."

So, if you have the gift of evangelism I recommend this book. If you don't have the gift of evangelism, I recommend this book. If you know of some young guys on fire for Jesus but who could use the temperance of a cool young pastor, then I recommend this book. If you're homeschooling a high schooler than I recommend this book. If you're in a small group that seeks to grow in the area of evangelism then I really recommend this book. The shipment was great. The book however, was even better.

Great book. I had my other youth workers get a copy because we are going to be teaching it during Sunday School. A quick read that it well worth reading over and over. It doesn't matter where you are in your walk with Christ...this book is a must ready and belongs on your shelf.

Short, lively, practical, stirring

Jonathan Dodson says that the Gospel is often unbelievable because:

- Although the Gospel is good news, many don't know how the Gospel is good news for them.
- Christians may be good at telling what the Gospel is, but are poor at saying what the Gospel does.
- Five common stereotypes of evangelism - preachy, impersonal, intolerant, know-it-all, and shallow evangelism - make Christians reluctant to share the Gospel.

In this short, lively, and practical book, Jonathan shares from his own experience how he has learned to help people know not only what the Gospel is, but how the Gospel is good news for them; and to do so in a way that avoids being preachy, impersonal, intolerant, etc.

What I especially appreciated was the way that Jonathan demonstrated how these "unbelievable" forms of evangelism result from wrong theology. This is not just about better technique; it's about better theology; and better technique will be the result. I also liked how Jonathan communicated this theology using five vivid biblical metaphors, making it accessible and memorable.

You don't need to agree with every detail of Jonathan's cultural engagement to benefit from this book. It's certainly helped me to get a little further along the road of the what, why, and how of personal evangelism.

About the Author
Robbie Adkins was born in Southern California shortly after WWII. She was able to grow up feeling safe and was able to explore all that this abundant world had to offer. There were of course limitations, but those caused her to start questioning everything…to become a seeker. After graduating from college with a degree in Graphic Communication, she started her very successful career as a graphic designer/illustrator. She won a guest editorship to Mademoiselle Magazine and went to New York to work as an intern for the month after her graduation. Her professional career included positions such as magazine art director and director of corporate communications for an emerging information company. She received many awards along the way, such as a Gold Medal from the LA Art Directors and a Best of Show from the Communication Arts group of San Diego. In her twenties, she took up the sport of skydiving and was in a world record formation made with all women. She then moved on to the emerging sport of hang gliding and was the only woman to qualify to compete in the Hang Gliding Nationals in 1974. Her whole life she has had a acute appetite for learning about all things spiritual with an emphasis on how we create our own reality. She has been influenced, among many others, by the teachings of Jesus Christ, Jane Roberts and the Seth materials, Native American teachings, the I-Ching, Abraham-Hicks (www.abraham-hicks.com), Alice A. Bailey and the teachings of the Tibetan (www.sevenray.net), Tony Burroughs and The Intenders of the Highest Good (www.intenders.com), and most recently, Marilyn Harper - Adironnda (http://adironndaspiritualhealer.com) She currently lives happily in Temecula with her husband Dale Polk and their two loving dogs.

Interesting book! I browsed through it, but did not have the time to make all the necessary materials. I am not snubbing my nose at anyone but I had to screen it more carefully when I realized that it was compiled from someone of a different Church group. In essence, we all havce the same beliefs, but some people may not appreciate it. Out of curiosity, I plan on reading this summer.

Such A Disappointment!

The first couple of pages draw you in with Part 1 and the introduction of Thomas to Emily. It was so cutely written and well thought out. It took me back to my childhood when I would have tea parties in my little plastic house in our backyard. NOW with that said.......this book didn't it for me at all. I thought by Part 1 that I was going to LOVE this book but I surely did not. Half the time Emily got on my nerves she was very immature, whiny, moody, and just annoying! This was more of a romance novel than a paranormal romance book. You get 59%(per my Kindle) into the book before the entire Healer thing comes out! Like WTF? This was more of a "normal" book about high school lovers just with the setting taking place at college. Which by the way seemed more like high school than college. The author had a good idea but the execution just fell short to me. I didn't connect with Emily or any of the characters at all.

Emily spent too much time worrying about possibly growing old and Thomas staying young forever. She kept saying over and over "Let me enjoy this time with Thomas while I can" like she is old and about to die vs a 19 or 20 something YOUNG girl! The whole replay and the reveal of who Gabriel REALLY is in the end was......I don't know it seemed out of place. The whole come about of Emily's mother wasn't done right. The author spent more time on the multiple sex scenes which weren't steamy at all. Than focusing on the supernatural part of the book for "The Hidden". The ending ended letting you know there will be another book that I won't be getting. This book contained no action the most action other than the boring sex was the car accident that Emily and Thomas got into. This book just......just. didn't. do. it for me and I say borrow the book don't buy it save your money.

What I liked:
Well- written, funny (at times hilarious), enjoyable characters.

What I would alter:
Too many sex scenes - ok, we get it, the H/h are beautiful and hot, let' s move on with the story!
Too many f- bombs- sometimes it added to the story or was even funny, but after a while it just detracted from the characters.
FYI This is a series in the same vein as Twilight...the book ends abruptly.

Overall
I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series.

Wow, LOVED it!!!

As a rule I don't read "supernatural" books, like with vampires or other fictitious types of non-humans. Reading the description of the book I thought it was about normal college kids but when I started the book sample I realized some of the characters were not human, just trying to blend in with the human population. I don't know why I didn't stop reading as soon as I realized the storyline was one I didn't normally like but by the time I got to the end of the sample, I was completely hooked! The writing and editing were done really well and the alternating POV's made the characters seem to come to life. The story moved along at the perfect pace and the twists and turns were surprising ones that I never saw coming. Thomas was an uber-hottie and the intimate scenes between him and Emily were off-the-charts hot! I really liked how Gabriel was introduced and then faded into the background before exploding back onto the scene in a huge way. Awesome ending and I can't wait for book #2!!!!

Thank goodness I'm not alone!

Tina's message was just what I needed to hear! I'm not alone. I'm not the crazy one. Keep up the fight. After 3 years (so far) through a very acrimonious divorce experience, I finally have some explanation why it has been so hard. I heard of a narcissist before, but I never considered it to be such a devastating personality disorder until I started learning more about it. It took me years to recognize the subtle and constant abuse that narcissism created in my marriage. Tina's story helped me go "no contact" as much as possible, and begin the process of reclaiming my life and happiness. I feel I have more tools to use when my ex-narc will start again with whatever-he-tries-next.

Thank you Tina, for the Ah-ha! moments throughout your book that helped me recognize classic narcissistic behavior, and how to deal with it. Thank you for the red-flag reflections. Thank you for "getting it" when so many people around me don't. Only his closest family members see the bizarre and abusive behavior. Others see him as a charming successful and all around good guy. Thank you for reminding me to document everything, because eventually his teflon coating will wear thin.

I just can't say thank you enough for the awareness and education that you are bringing to this topic. I donated my copy to my local women's shelter.

For so long I have been searching for a book that validated what I was going through; that could show me that I wasn't the only one in the world that was going through this. So grateful to Tina Swithin for writing this book. I could not put it down and read it in one night. Amazing and highly recommend to anyone who is going through a high conflict divorce and/or is dealing with a narcissistic ex-spouse.

Fun and Interesting Read

I love books like this! It's really interesting - and funny - to read some of the strange things that people actually believed to be true. I also enjoyed reading about the history of the comic strip, which is how all of these little tid-bits first came together in one place, and it was nice to see so much of the original art included in this book.

Way too short

This book is written by a gentleman who grew up withing a few miles of where I was raised in rural, eastern Kentucky. He was only a kid only a few years before my time. My grandfather was an 'herb doctor' so I was familiar with a lot of the beliefs he talks about. I enjoyed it and only fault it for being too short.
