An off the wall approach to Quotations known and unknown.

As a longtime fan of Quotations,I was enamored with this little tome.I have never come across anything like what Liam Leaven gives us here.It somewhat reminded me of some of the familiar proverbs or sayings where a proverb is offered;then another familiar proverb states just the opposite.
For example;
"seek and ye shall find."
and
" A rolling stone gathers no moss."
"Many hands make light work."
and
"Too many cooks spoil the broth."
And so on.
What Liam Leaven does is take a familiar quotation,such as this;
"Some men change their party for the sake of their principles;others change their principles for the sake of their party...
"Me? I'm going where the women are wearing togas."
Me,and Winston Churchill.
Then,this is how he reacts to what Vincent Van Gogh said;
"If you hear a voice within you say,'you cannot paint,then by all means paint,and that voice will be silenced...
to which Liam responds;
"...oh, but first you have to cut off your ear.And then turn that side of your head towards the voice.What?"
And how about this,my favorite?
"Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom..." by George S. Patton
And from Liam;
"...people who land on trampolines,therefore,are generally more successful than those vwho land on large piles of bricks.So go get yourself a trampoline,and then hire a pigmy to follow you around,holding the trampoline behind you,in case you fall."
Obviously,this little tome is destined for a Pulitzer...the only problem is in what category.

Off Beat, but Laugh Worthy

I thought that Huge Words by Huge People had an interesting premise - taking the words of the greats and adding a unique modern spin to them. I have always been a fan of twisting words into puns and the like, so I was intrigued by author, Liam James Leaven's, work, especially since I knew that it was illustrated. I liked the fun, sometimes child-like, sketches that depicted each quote, many of them were laugh worthy, particularly the more literal ones. I also enjoyed the pastel/ black color scheme. As for the "Huge Words", my reaction was 50/50. Many of the mash-ups were very clever, even deep, but others seemed obscure and discombobulated. Here is one of the funnier compilations:
"Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom... people who land on trampolines, therefore, are generally more successful than those who land on large piles of bricks. So go get yourself a trampoline, and then hire a pygmy to follow you around holding the trampoline behind you, in case you fall." by George W. Patton & Liam James Leaven
Besides the odd quote match-ups, I really thought that Liam's blog/ book idea was uniquely novel, and a great conversation piece! The off-beat nature of the book definitely made it worth the read, and the length (68 pages) was perfect for toting around until break-time. Overall, I enjoyed my reading experience, I just wish that there had been more "Huge Words".

Huge laughs for all people

Humor books can be a very sensitive thing, some falling flat while others soar, leaving me in fits of hysterics long after I put the actual tome down. I am filing "Huge Words by Huge People" in the latter category. The twists and wanderings of LJL's interpretations of well know quotations were uniquely his own and led me places lined with laughter and giggles. The illustrations mesh flawlessly, and when all is said and done, this book is a top-shelf laughter elixir.
