About the Author
Peter Schultz is an archaeologist, entrepreneur, and conservationist. He is the former Olin J. Storvick Chair of Classical Studies at Concordia College.. He received his BA in Art History, Philosophy, and Classics from Concordia in 1994 and his MA in Art History from Vanderbilt University in 1997. He took his PhD in Classical Archaeology from the University of Athens in 2003. Dr. Schultz has held advanced fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the A.G. Leventis Foundation, the Fritz-Thyssen Stiftung für Wissenschaftsförderung and the American School of Classical Studies, Athens -- among others. He is the editor of Early Hellenistic Portraiture: Image, Style, Context (with Ralf von den Hoff; 2007 Cambridge University Press), Aspects of Ancient Greek Cult: Ritual, Context, Iconography (with Jesper Jensen, George Hinge and Bronwen Wickkiser; 2009 Århus University Press), Structure, Image, Ornament: Architectural Sculpture in the Greek World (with Ralf von den Hoff; 2009 Oxbow Press), Artists and Artistic Production in Ancient Greece (with Kristen Seaman; 2015 Cambridge University Press) and the author of numerous articles on ancient Greek art, architecture and topography. His research interests include ancient Greek sculpture and architecture, archaeological theory, ancient Macedonian history before Alexander and modern Greek poetry, music, feasting, and landscape.

I got my Greek on!

I got this book as a student on a foreign study program in classical archaeology and history going to Greece. We studied the first half of the book before we went, and I have continued to use it as a learning tool since arriving. Prof. Schultz's enthusiasm really shines through here and makes learning Greek a relatively painless experience, especially if you have any background in another language. I used a student version of Rosetta Stone in combination with this book, which really helped with pronunciation (maybe future editions could include audio resources?). But I think it was the book that gave me the confidence to actually try speaking.
Am I fluent? No. But knowing a little Greek and at least trying to speak it can make a huge difference in how you interact with people in Greece. I stopped by a gelato place in Corinth with some other students in my group. After they all ordered in English, I asked for what I wanted in Greek (using only phrases from the first few lessons in GYGO). About halfway through, the woman behind the counter turned to the student next to me, who had just ordered, and said, "She speak Greek!" with a huge smile on her face. It was great, and I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of traveling to Greece to pick up this book.

BRAVO!!!!

This is a very good book. The text is very easy to understand and each lessons is one page spread, so it is clear what you need to be learning. In the Introduction, the author writes: "It is important to keep in mind that this is not a comprehensive Greek language course nor is it a 'Greek phrase book.' Rather, it is intended to be a very quick, very simple introduction to a few of the most basic principles of modern Greek for the student, traveler, or explorer." This is why I give the book 4 not 5 stars. I was really looking for more of a 'phrase book' and not such a rigorous language course, even if it is a short one. There are "key phrases" in each lesson, and they are super useful. But the book was a little too "serious" for me. If you are looking for a basic introduction to basic grammar, this is the best thing out there that I could find; but it isn't a phrase book.

A great Introductory Workbook

This author lives and breathes passion for Greece, and you can feel it just by reading this book. It makes you energized and excited to learn, which is a very important, and easily ignored, ingredient to successful learning. THe beek is easy to pick up, and will have you speaking basic sentences in just two weeks!
