Just Get It!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but I am very happy that I ordered it. I don't know the author, just saw that it had come out in something I was reading on FB. Took a chance and bought it.

Am so glad I did. I am still reading my way through it slowly, but she is very clear and thorough and I can already tell this will transform my shading(it already has). It always intimidated me before. After reading only the first part of this book, I began incorporating it and I'm already delighted. I know from experience that practice makes perfect, which means I will only get better as I continue reading the book and trying things. Without this book, I might have eventually gotten here but it would have taken a lot longer.

The book is well-written and the illustrations are wonderful. If you have been intimidated at all by shading, just get this! It's great. Thank you, Cris Letourneau.

Ok, it's now a couple of days later...I've been reading slowly (lack of time) but I have been shading like made and guess what--it looks great! First time I can say that. Get this book and use it!

Some good information, but terrible quality printed book.

I have been building my Zentangle library and am fairly picky about which ones I'm choosing to buy. Some of them seem pretty repetitive and I was attracted to this book because the author seems to cover a subject that hadn't been widely covered before in detail. I'm not all the way through with it yet but I definitely have some comments to share. First, the pros. I like the author's breezy, friendly writing style and the amount and type of information she offers to the reader. She keeps the subject very relevant to shading as it pertains to tangling and without making you feel that you're sitting in a Drawing 101 class. I liked that. She shows a lot of examples and exercises and provides space for you to try it yourself, although I myself don't like to mark up books like that; I like to use separate pieces of paper.

Now that cons. While it is very admirable in my book that the author seems to have self-published (I give her a tremendous amount of kudos for this), the quality of the product suffers greatly. The book is printed in black ink only, which is fine, given the subject, but this is a book about a visual art, and the print quality of the book is HORRIBLE. The Xerox machine at work makes better copies! The author's illustrations and photos are muddy and faded, so the impact is lost. Furthermore, there are TONS of typos throughout the book, including on the back cover. To me, that's just inexcusable, especially for the price being charged. The cons really are distracting and take away from the positive aspects of this book. My advice to the author is to hire a new printer and a proofreader and reissue the book. My warning to potential buyers of this book is that it is not "eye candy" as so many of the other Zentangle books are, but it does contain some useful information about shading. I'm just not sure it is worth the money.

One-of-a-Kind

I have to say that I own just about every Zentangle book that has been published, and there is nothing like this one among them. As a Certified Zentangle Teacher, I often have students ask me questions regarding shading and I will be whole-heartedly recommending this book to all my students in the future. Chris covers many individual tangle patterns and even categorizes them so that patterns not presented in her book can be shaded. There are no rigid rules and she provides alternative choices for shading a variety of tangles. I have not seen any other book covering this topic with specific regards to Zentangle. It is jam-packed with knowledgeable advice and well worth the cost.

Another good read to keep you up at night.

I have read a lot of the low cost cost, relative to published paper books, over the past couple of years from Amazon. While there has been a reasonable amount of dreck I have not spent a large amount of money for it as I would have have purchasing a paperback. HOWEVER, this is one of the books I would have been willing to pay the paperback price for!
A derivative of Starship Troopers, as others have said, Yes, BUT different with good character back story and growth. I could go on and on, about the story, but I always hate finding out things I will read in the book, so I won't. All I will say is that if you like Military Science Fiction, hate Government control of your life, want to believe that the future of the human race is out in space, you will love this book. If you don't, I wouldn't recommend reading this.
Overall a great read, and I am really looking forward to the release of the next in the series, and also plan to read some of the author's other books.

No description, no detail, no plot, no emotion.It's almost as if the emotionless main character has none of the five senses.

This book is just flat.

If you're looking for a book that invokes no imagery or emotion, doesn't contain descriptions, but describes events in straight prose, look no further. The book is written in the first person and the main character doesn't ever mention how anything smells, tastes, what color it is, how it sounds, how it feels, or what he is feeling at the time. None of the other characters interact with the main character, with the exception of a general and a female doctor and those are just straight dialogue without any description of the scene.

There is one part of the book where the main character describes the pain of a medical treatment in a very clinical sense and it was almost like the author has never felt pain, and like renaissance artists who had never seen an elephant, the rendering is artificial and has no ring of truth.

Here is part of a description of his battalion after a large battle from about two thirds into the book: "My battalion had 540 men and women at full strength. The day we we went through the warp gate to HD 44594 we had 252 fit for duty. Sanchez was dead and Rijis was wounded and en route for Gliese, so two of the three companies were without their commanders..."

It continues the same way. No dirt, no dust, no bone weary, stressed humans who smell like they've been wearing full body armor for a week...

I cannot recommend this book.

Boring

Did all of the other reviewers read the same book I did? I'm becoming convinced more and more every day that the reviews for indie books on Amazon are shill reviewers trying to pump up sales.

If I had to describe this book in only one word it would be 'boring'. The battles are boring, the characters are boring, and the whole story reads like the personal diary of a talented, but exceptionally boring Space Marine as he goes from mission to mission.

Marines (Crimson Worlds I) is the story of Erik Cain, who goes from a life of crime in the gutter of society to a soldier for a corrupt government as it wars against other super powers for control of off world colonies.

I'll give the author credit for one thing: he knows how to write a proper back story. For someone with a minor interest in Geopolitics the future history that the author created is both plausible and intriguing. A problem with a lot of military scifi is that the authors tend to either ignore the reasons why soldiers fight wars or they try to oversimplify it. The spectrum ranges from 'Down with the corporations!' to 'The socialists are invading to fund their welfare queens!' (I'm looking at you David Weber). Jay Allen writes of a complex, dystopian future where bureaucratic ineptitude, corruption, and economic stagnation has turned the Earth into a desolate world where various tyrannical superpowers are locked in a long and bitter cold war. The 'hot wars' are fought over space colonies, whose exports back to their colonial masters prop up their respective economies. America has become a fascist police state where the privileged few reign over a small middle class and vast underclass.

This complex history is the only reason this review has two stars. Somehow (and I don't know how) it manages to carry the rest of this pile of dreck forward. Unfortunately, while the back story is excellent, the *actual* story is tedious and skims over the story of a few paper thin and one dimensional characters.

First problem: Battles.

I don't read military scifi for the dialogue or complex character driven stories. I want to read riveting action scenes where the good guys defeat the bad guys. If you want complex, go read Asimov or Clarke. The author (note how I don't use the term 'writer') seems to have a good idea of what he wants his characters to do, but can't seem to write it down in a way that engages the reader or meets the (low) standards required for pulp Sci-Fi. Awkward paragraphs and dry matter-of-fact descriptions make the battle scenes read more like a series of after action reports written by a sleep deprived 2nd LT that barely passed English 101 in ROTC. I expect a little bit of this from indie authors (no editor), but I was constantly being dragged out of the story to try and figure out what he was trying to tell me.

Second problem: Characters.

Again, I don't expect complex characters from mil scifi (see Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series), however even the *main character* had absolutely no depth or motivation. All he did is go form battle to battle where everyone praised how great of a leader he was while everyone died around him. Nothing about Cain defined him from everyone else around him other than half baked philosophical notions of how the colonies were the future (or something). Later in the book, the author seems to realize this and tacks on "survivor's guilt" to try to give him some motivation. Apparently Cain feels guilty that so many of his men died, so he comes up with sound strategies so they won't get killed. That's a weak motivation. A good commander comes up with sound strategies because he is a good commander, and good commanders don't get their troops killed either because they care about them, or they consider them a valuable resource - depends on if they are good or bad guys.

If you want to get away with a flat main character and boring battles, then you at least need to have a colorful supporting cast for him to interact with, care about, and give some depth and humanity to the story (see Star Wars). Did the author do this? NOPE! Each side character is flat and uninteresting. Everyone acts pretty much the same as everyone else, except for a few personal traits that look like they were tacked on at the last moment (the Japanese space samurai likes burgers, the General/Mentor drinks a lot of expensive booze, everyone thinks that his girlfriend is hot, etc.).

Third Problem: Distance.

English majors probably have a proper word for this, but I call it `distance'. Good writers have different styles depending on how detailed they want to be about a scene and `zoom' in and out their detail level. Sometimes you want to jump long distances (either in time or space) in writing to get to the point of the story that's interesting. An example would be `After getting out of jail, Frankie caught the next train to Chicago to talk to Al Capone.' You don't really care about how Frankie went down to the train station, bought a ticket, dealt with a screaming kid on the train, used the bathroom, and was bored for the rest of the trip. You just care that he went to talk to Al Capone. A major problem that this author has is that he is zoomed out when he should be giving detail, and tends to giving excruciating detail when he really should be getting to the point.

Here's an example that also ties into the second problem mentioned earlier: Early in the book, after receiving a crippling injury, Cain is transferred to a hospital to have his injuries healed so he can return to duty. While at the hospital he gets a crush on his hot female doctor. At first I was excited that this dreary book was going to (finally) have some interesting character interaction. This has been done (successfully) in the past by other authors. It could have gone like this: Cain falls for the doc. She resists, either because she is not interested, wants to maintain professional distance, or feels that she is taking advantage of a vulnerable person. Over time after he is discharged they run into each other periodically over the course of their careers, discovering things that they have in common, growing close, and eventually having a realistic relationship. A complex interlude to the violence that occurs around Cain constantly.

Sounds good, right? Except that didn't happen. A few pages later they hook up after he gets out of the hospital, are apparently smitten with each other, and then separate due to their duties. This is all covered by half of a paragraph. Years later they are thrown back together again by the General/Mentor and apparently they have had a perfect long distance relationship in the interim. No new boyfriend for the super hottie, no growing distant, etc. Apparently this guy must be so great in the sack that girls stay smitten with him for years on end without personal contact.

I could go on and on about the problems with this book, but that's probably enough at this point. If the author learns to write good action scenes and characters he could easily be on the same level as David Drake. I'm not holding my breath though.

Verdict: Buy if you have nothing else to read. I might cough up the $4(!) to read the sequel and see if he worked out his writing issues.

Looks like it could be a good one !

First, let me say that I haven't yet read this book. (I have recently purchased so many books that I'm years behind on my reading.) However, this book looks like it could be a good one. Based on the "Look Inside," the author's approach is refreshing. Also, in these days when the price of new statistics books is often in the three-digit category, this price is also 'refreshing'. Just based on these two points, I'm going to give five stars!

I bought this book and I haven't even looked at it once. It was a pain in the a** to carry around all the time and I forgot it a lot so I just bought the computer one.
Waste of my money.

It does it's job for being a book.

Successful integration is a result of having the right personnel, available tools, correct MDMP methodology, and synchronized timeline throughout the process. About the Author
Colonel (Ret) John M Menter was commissioned into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant of Armor through the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Program and assigned to an Armored Cavalry Regiment following completion of his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering & History from the California Polytechnic University in 1979. He is also a graduate of the US Army War College Defense Strategic Studies Course, the US Army Command and General Staff College (Honor Graduate), the Armor Officer Basic & Advance Course, Quartermaster and Transportation Officer Advance Course, and the Army’s Medical Officer Qualification Course. His civilian education also includes a Doctorate in History as well a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of La Verne. In 2005, he qualified as a Certified Logistics Professional (CLP) through the Institute of Logistics Management. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin from the US Army Association of Quartermasters, the Honorable Order of Saint Christopher from the US Army Transportation Corps Regimental Association, as well as the Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe. Dr. Menter has served in a variety of tours world-wide in both armor and sustainment support positions from company up to Division level. He retired after 25 years from active duty in April 2002, and is now working for Team Northrop-Grumman/CACI Inc. as a Doctrinal Training Team Lead and Operations Coordinator for the Mission Command Training Support Program (MCTSP), with his specific focus on training sustainment type units. In the time since, he has conducted hundreds of classes and seminars for the U.S. Army Maneuver, Maneuver Support, and Sustainment units in the Military Decision Making Process as well as conducting Battlestaff training & Unit Command Post Exercise simulations for units preparing for overseas operations. He currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada with his wife, Jeanette.

Outstanding Resource for Logisticians. This book provides the evolution of sustainment operations from years past to today’s modern battlefield logistics. This book provides guidance and perspective on the MDMP process while providing information and solutions to assist the Army Logistician of today. This is a must have reference to any Logistician in the Army today. I use this book constantly to provide tools to assist me in providing instruction to soldiers when applicable. The MDMP process for Logisticians can be overwhelming at times. This book provides suggestions and examples to bring solutions to complex problems. I highly recommend it for any logistics professional.

She is a liturgist and church musician, writer, actor, artist/designer.m Teri serves as Director of Liturgy and Music at St John Vianney Church in Sedona, AZ, where she lives with her husband, Robert Bays, while enjoying life with their beautiful German Shepherd, a talking parrot and a cockatiel, a gift from a choir.

This woman is not one of the spiritual icons of the currency but she is a real amusing and amazing storyteller.
I met her and I know Father JC. I came to know him better and like him more based upon Bays reflections of
how he operates and touches the world of Catholicism. I recommend her book because more of us need to hear
what those pounding the keys and directing the choir have to say about the priest center-stage

Whether or not you grew up Catholic, this book will quickly draw you in with its sincerity and riveting images of a life centered around music, family, and church liturgy. Ms. Bays takes you on a poignant journey from a childhood in a large, Italian Catholic family on the east coast to her present-day life in a small-town, Arizona parish. She is skillful writer, leading you into her relationships and myriad of experiences and emotions within them. She shares openly the joys, the tension, and the sorrows of relationship, both personal and professional. I highly recommend this book.

A very exciting novel with lots of action and plenty of detail to surround the reader. Really enjoy the plot twists and turns and enloy trying to figure out where the story may lead next. Recommend this book for anyone who enjoy adventure and romance.

Difficult to read

I got this book based on a decent reviews by other readers. It was terrible! The droning description and introspection of the main character is almost Proustian without the good writing. This author doesn't know the difference between famous and infamous. There are other horrendous misuse of the English and possibly Chinese as well.
If you want to read about the most self delusional and boring person ever written about, read this book.

An amazing adventure from California to China, mentally and physically

I was sad when I came to the end of the book because each page brought a new experience. Ms. Balliet writes with a lot of description and detail, so much that you feel as if you were standing wet, from the rain, on a mountain in China. Or, you can feel the wind blowing through your hair as you walk along the docks in San Diego. Lastly, her character starts out with a somewhat self-involved personality, but, as the book progresses, you get to join in with her own maturing of what is important in life. This book was fully engrossing and I actually read it twice - because of the entertaining detail of China that she included in the book. Can't wait for the next one!

Inspiring!

We all have our stories..... this one is inspiring, encouraging and hopeful. It's difficult enough to find yourself through all that goes on in childhood and adult relationships. To find yourself through damaged family relationships that were meant to be the ones that you trusted the most and through the "happily ever after" dreams that were all but that.... is indeed a triumph. Sandra Blake takes you through her journey and you root through out for her. Someone you want to know and be lucky enough to call a friend.

Couldn't put this book down

I read this book in two seatings....just had to see what would happen next! Sandra Blake has certainly been though a lot, more than anyone should have to endure, yet she overcomes it all and goes on to lead a sensational life as a business woman, mother, wife and friend to many. This book is so inspiring, it should be read by all. Maybe some day we will see Sandra on one of the talk shows discussing her book and her life! You "go girl"!

I couldn't put the book down. I know Sandra, she is a friend of mine. She is such an inspiration to all that go through an abusive relationship. If you meet Sandra today you would never know she went through what she went through. She is a very strong women. Loving Mother and great friend. She is well educated and professional. Why do I work a boring job?

I was intrigued to hear a story from the same corner of the world from the opposite gender. Let's just say I was up until the early morning hours to find out how it ended. Perhaps it's just my recent pick in literature, but the theme of this book has been about free-spirit as well as discovery and I can honestly say it encourages me to think twice about my boring job. I might just have to go on a little adventure myself!

Really Great Book!!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about Kate's journey with her friend Kay to the Himalayas. First I loved reading Kate's history. She's an independent person who has had many adventures in life and seems fearless. This book describes how she realized her dream of trekking in the Himalayas. It's also a book about personal growth, uncertainty, courage and victory. It's also about FUN! Kate's book is very well-written. Her narrative is engaging and I felt like I was right there on the Langtang Trek with Kate and Kay. There are some beautiful photographs in the book. The book is also beautifully formatted.

I think most people who read this book will be inspired to take their own personal journey.

I highly recommend this book.

Reminds you its never too late to live a dream

This book title "Transformative Travel" describes its content very well -
how travel (or any realized dream) can transform your life. For Kate, it was
challenging herself - unfit and in her fifties - to do treks in the Himalayas.
she accomplished a life goal which helped motivate her to do more with her life.
It is a simple lesson but a profound one...and something we should all remember
when we are burdened with all the chains of daily life....
