Love and suspense with a dash of Southern Gothic... From the author of Beach Rental and Kincaid's Hope
Rachel Sevier, a lonely thirty-two year old inventory specialist, travels to Wynnedower Mansion in Virginia to find her brother who has stopped returning her calls. Instead, she finds Jack Wynne, the mansion's bad-tempered owner. He isn't happy to meet her. When her brother took off without notice, he left Jack in a lurch.
Jack has his own plans. He's tired of being responsible for everyone and everything and wants nothing more than to shake his obligations, including the old mansion. The last thing he needs is someone who'll complicate his life further, but he agrees to allow Rachel to stay while she waits for her brother to return.
At Wynnedower, Rachel becomes curious about the house and its owner. If rumors are true, the means to save Wynnedower Mansion from demolition are hidden within its walls, but the other inhabitants of Wynnedower have agendas, too. Not only may Wynnedower's treasure be stolen, but also the life of its arrogant master, unless Rachel can save them.

Quick read book
By Lenora Laverty
The book was a quick read. It was mystery but you sort of knew what was going to happen in the future. Grace Greene is a good writer. There was no vulgarity or grusomeness in the book which made it enjoyable reading. The ending did surprise me! I am looking forward to reading the other books written by Ms. Greene.

A 21st century Daphne du Maurier tale
By Sally Berneathy
I didn't want this book to end! I wanted to stay at Wynnedower and continue to be a part of Rachel and Jack's lives!
This story completely hooked me from the beginning when Rachel is staring at "the monstrous stone house," Wynnedower, after following her brother's directions to "drive until the trees crowd in close and the road looks like it's about to end, then keep driving."
Wynnedower is a rambling, rundown old mansion with locked doors, forbidden rooms, mysterious people who come and go, and a sexy, enigmatic owner who advises Rachel to, "Lock the door and keep it locked. If you hear noises in the night, ignore them."
The story has the gothic allure of a Daphne du Maurier novel but with twenty-first century characters. Rachel is a modern heroine, a strong, complex woman who can take care of herself. Jack is inscrutable but a real person, and the attraction between the two of them is powerful and compelling. The description of that attraction is subtle and understated...and completely believable. I felt Rachel's emotions, her growing attraction to a man she doesn't completely understand and doesn't always like, felt those emotions and her happiness, confusion, pain...
I won't give away any of the secrets...and there are plenty of them...but suffice to say, once you start reading this book, you won't be able to put it down.

Things that go bump in the night... an excellent modern gothic
By Three Kindle Family
I picked this book based on other reviews, and I am glad I did! This is a refreshingly modern gothic, complete with a strange old house, a missing relative, a handsome yet mysterious homeowner, a creepy housekeeper and strange people popping up. Oh, and the rumor of a hidden treasure.
This book stars a likeable , tough-enough but nice heroine who I could not help rooting for. She cares, yet she has a spine, unlike some of the "classic" gothic heroines who seem to let everyone walk on them. Her story is well told, and she comes across as a real person. I liked her, I respected her strength, and her weaknesses too. The supporting cast is also good, and suitably mysterious. I also enjoyed the clean romance; I am not a prude but after years of romance reading, steamy love scenes are rather tiresome, not to mention repetitive. This book has a few kisses, and a good romantic story.
When all the mysteries are solved, I thought "that was fun, enjoyable, and worth the read."
This author writes well, including readable and believable descriptions of physical and emotional settings. I am looking forward to checking out her other books.
There are just a few errors in editing, making reading it a pleasure.
