Elegant and Pragmatic Book on Social Media
By Margaret Molloy
Imagine a high-energy dinner party with smart friends freely sharing lessons learned from years of practice, research, and reflection. A party where the host purposefully builds the guest list and guides the conversation. That's 8 Mandates.

Its elegant organizational construct makes it fast and engaging. With 8 Mandates, Huffman curates insight on social media marketing from leading CMOs, authors and professors. The no-nonsense introductions ground us in the context of social media as a marketing discipline and the case studies bring the wisdom to life. 8 Mandates is a delight. @MargaretMolloy

It's All About Content -- Great Content
By Reg Rowe
Kent Huffman had me hooked with his fishing analogy in the introduction. You have to fish where the fish are. And to find the fish (potential customers), you have to create great content. That content allows you to establish trust and engage audiences, the key to all marketing. The 8 Mandates provides real-world examples that every marketer will want to read. Five Stars!

Clear, tight, and backed up with vivid case examples
By David C. Edelman
Kent Huffman has put together a very simple, but powerful, list of "Mandates" that Marketers would be well-advised to follow. While some of them may sound too simple, like "Start Listening", he gives rich descriptions of what is involved and the case studies do a great job of laying it all out in practice. Many of these stories help get the reader into a deeper state of mind to understand the fundamental change in perspective required to succeed in social media. When you put them all together, it is a reshaping of the typical priorities a tradition marketer may have had. His quotes and examples give you more permission to think differently, and help a reader understand the implications for action. It is a quick read, great to pass around a leadership team, and should get an organization talking.

East of the Great Valley: The Story of Merab McCreary, by Sylvia Ross

EAST OF THE GREAT VALLEY is a historical novel of Gold Rush California. It is set in the Sierra during the 1856-1876 period. The book tells the story of a child, the survivor of a slaughtered Indian band, and the white family who adopted her. "If it is true, that a good writer begins in the silences--then once again we have Sylvia Ross to thank for writing us out of that silent place in California's past and into this cacophony of voices, where history and fiction are blurred, where those seemingly quiet secrets we sometimes call folktales, such as this epic and authentic story of Merab McCreary, are written out into the light. Under Ross's careful and wise hand, and filtered through her own unique visionary lens, we get the history of the Great Central Valley, as told through this singularly original tale, which goes far beyond mere coming-of-age, for this is a document-of-change. What Ross has essentially captured here is a tectonic shift in motion; through her words we are brought to witness an anthropological slab of sediment rise up and forge what we now call the Great Valley--indeed, that beautiful and hideous place I know and love and loathe all at once. In the end, there are only a small handful of writers whose work I return to time and again when I want to remember--I mean really remember--who I am. East of the Great Valley by Sylvia Ross is not only among those works, but it is simply one more vital book by a writer who I consider to be one of our finest gems."

A Fast-Paced Historical Drama
By Amazon customer
“At dawn, Nancy McCreary woke from a dream of wolves.” So begins EAST OF THE GREAT VALLEY, a magnificent historical epic of California that takes place near present-day Madera County south of Yosemite National Park. The time period is the mid 1800s (before, during, and after the American Civil War), and the novel goes beyond regional and historical fiction to paint a more universal picture of human strengths, human foibles, human suffering, and personal victory in the face of adversity.

The wolves of the first sentence symbolize both the predatory nature of evil as well as the perseverence that is an aspect of virtue. These two qualities are amply shown in the diverse characters who make up this book. We see the fascinating and compelling differences of class and politics, as well as a rainbow of nationalities and races. Sylvia Ross realistically and sensitively depicts those who populated the American West; whether Irish, Jewish, Russian, Mexican, Chinese, German, etc., all were striving to make a new life in California. We also see the plight of multiple Native American tribes struggling against near extinction.

At the same time, the story shows us a sort of horrific coming-of-age story about a two-year-old Native American foundling child who is sold into slavery at age six when her white adoptive mother dies. The child, alternatively known as Merab, MeMe, and Napas, perseveres through a series of experiences—some pleasant, some grueling—until her foster brothers grow up and, after the Civil War, begin to search for her.

Ross’s writing is energetic and compelling, and unlike many historical novels that get bogged down in cumbersome and boring paragraphs about the past, this is a page-turner. The narrative maintains suspense is it moves deftly back-and-forth between the stories of the enslaved Indian girl and the lives of the foster brothers she has unwillingly left behind. The insights into history are credible and gripping as we learn about the hardships of life in the eighteenth century, the subjugation of women, the degradation of slavery, the brutality of war, and the injustice of racial prejudice—as well as about the optimism, endurance, and adaptability that kept people going through these many difficulties.

Very highly recommended!

One Indian girl's survival as her culture disappears.
By Amazon Customer
What if an orphaned Indian baby girl is adopted by a white woman and her family against the wishes of her husband? This is the story that answers that question. Set in the tumultuous times when this country is in the middle of a civil war, when the Indian population is being exterminated in the west, the story of Merab McCreary draws the reader into that world. At a time when Indians were treated the same as Blacks, bought and sold, Merab is ill-equipped to deal with the brutal world illustrated in this novel.

Additionally, this story follows the McCreary family as it is transformed by war and grief and pain. Though sprinkled with moments of tenderness and love, their story is one of facing life with clear eyes and determination.

This book affords the reader an opportunity to step back in time and into the shoes of people who lived in the foothills East of the Great Valley in California. Each character is vividly portrayed, unsanitized by political correctness. Carefully researched, the reader will appreciate the authenticity. This book is recommended to anyone who values historical literature.

California history page turner
By Closet Poet
Sylvia Ross's new novel, East of the Great Valley is the powerful story of Merab Mc Creary (whose Chukchansi tribal name is Napas). When her mother dies while giving birth in a barn belonging to Frederick and Nancy McCreary, Merab survives. Arriving from Indiana the McCrearys have settled in Crane Valley, California (near Bass Lake) in the 1860's. Nancy is compassionate and cares for the newborn as well as a two-year old girl whom she names Merab. The baby dies, but Nancy adopts the little girl. However, her husband Frederick, like many of the local settlers of the time, sees Indians as less than human, and vehemently rejects the little girl's presence in his home. But the family's four sons love Merab and bond with her calling her by the nickname "Me Me."

When Nancy dies, Frederick sees his chance to rid himself of Merab. The Civil War has not yet definitively decided the question of slavery. Frederick overrules compassionate feelings expressed by his ranch help and sons, and determines to sell the child near the gold rush settlements where his transport business has been flourishing. This he accomplishes with cruel determination. Frederick's elder sons join the Union army and run away from their father's authority to serve in the Civil War.

We follow Merab's plight with a succession of masters until she is forced to flee the violent and deranged Pastor who is determined to abuse her. Merab becomes a fugitive from justice when she is wrongfully blamed for the Pastor's death. News about her makes the newspapers and in this way her brothers learn she is still alive.
Merab shows her resourcefulness and courage and finds unexpected allies. Her brothers try to find her before vigilante justice can do its work. Local Miwok people find her and hide her in the mountains. The author crafts a tight suspenseful story to the resolution and ultimate triumph of Merab's extraordinary life.

Sylvia Ross depicts a time in California's history when the influences of East, West, North and South compete for the future, and the old ways still linger. She masterfully portrays this period against the rugged mountain landscape in a way that is convincing and never sentimental. Sylvia Ross delivers a fine story that deserves to become a classic of California literature.

Have you always wanted to play the 30-button Anglo concertina with more than just a simple one-note melody? This tutor will teach you how to play with chords and full harmonies in a wide variety of musical styles. The book includes 60 tunes with full chords and increasingly complex arrangements. Of all the other Anglo tutors out there, the tablature system presented here is by far and away the easiest to understand and play. In addition to tunes and exercises for beginning players, this tutor also presents more difficult tunes that have been carefully transcribed from recordings of the top Anglo concertina players of the last several decades. The playing of William Kimber, John Kirkpatrick, Jody Kruskal, Bertram Levy, Kenneth N.J. Loveless, Brian Peters, Andy Turner, John Watcham and many others are showcased to help you learn and develop your own unique style on this surprisingly versatile acoustic little squeezebox. Instead of including a CD with the book, most of the tunes can be found on the "anglotutor" playlist on YouTube where you can both see and hear them being played on a 30-button C/G Anglo concertina.

i'm learning !
By Stanley Ogozelec
After playing the accordion, piano, and keyboard for over 50+ years, I developed arthritis. My fingers made playing keys extremely difficult.. Since my fingers were a little crooked, playing an instrument with buttons seemed the way to go to continue playing music. I purchased a 30-button concertina and needed to learn from a book. I live in a rural area, so that was the only way to learn. This book's instruction starts out very basic and then build your skill level gradually. It's a great beginner's book 1

Learn an approach - not just tunes!
By Richard A. Bennett
If you're a melody player who throws in an occasional chord, on a 30 button anglo, Gary Coover's "Harmonic Style" will open your eyes and provide interest. Like all Gary's books, it teaches an approach not just a few tunes!

Excellent book, good harmonies, fun songs.
By College Counselor
I like this book a lot. I had been playing concertina about a month when my husband bought this for me. I figured out fairly quickly how to play a basic melody, which was fine, but it wasn’t enough. I craved harmony and accompaniment, which I knew the concertina was capable of. At first it was difficult to play the melody and then try to put the left hand in; I didn’t think I would get it. But it came together on “You Are All I Have”, a beautiful waltz in the book. This is so much more satisfying than just a single melody line.

There are plenty of traditional British and Irish tunes, but I’m really glad that the author also included “St. James Infirmary”, “The Song From Moulin Rouge”, “Over the Rainbow” (especially beautiful) and other tunes not usually played on the concertina.

And if you can’t figure out exactly how a tune goes, you can go to Youtube where Coover plays all of them. That helps a lot.

The tablature system is fairly easy and you can catch on to it. Right hand buttons are shown above the notes, left hand buttons below and the pull is indicated by a line over the top. It’s a pretty good system. The one downside, I would say, is that, then, transferring to regular music, I’m somewhat lost without the button numbers. Many of the tunes indicate both the chord name (G, C,F, Dm) and the buttons you need to push, but one tends to look at the numbers and ignore the names. I’m sure this is remedied with continued practice (or covering up the numbers?).

A very fun, helpful book, worth every penny!

From the Author
I decided that I could write this novel [Forest Life] a few years back in San Diego. I was sitting in a puddle of my vomit beside my friend, Jordan. He didn't complain as he mopped up my mess, just rubbed my back and comforted me as I lamented my seemingly irreparable sorrow. Earlier in the evening I'd nearly drowned myself in shots of bourbon. The distraction of bouncing around the country had worn off. Jordan did his best to comfort me that night. Everyone should have a friend like Jordan.

For the past couple years, I've been putting pieces of my life together. I sat down and mapped out each section as an event. Consciously, I wrote each period of my life into the book. I tried my best to keep the story fictional, but it's filled with Easter eggs, hidden 'I love yous' and apologies are sprinkled all over. For months I'd sit with a small glass of bourbon or a glass of beer and pour out my memories, fictionalizing them the best I could manage. Through the writing process, lots of forgotten memories surfaced. It was a rough time, full of drunken strolls through Kansas City, Brooklyn, and Paris.

In Kansas City, before I met my wife, I lived with a few friends in an apartment downtown.
We formed a little family unit and carried one another through our various struggles. I was intoxicated almost all day every day and especially at night. I'd walk down the street to a gas station where I'd purchase five dollar peach vodka to fuel my writing binges. My beautiful housemates, Britt and Molly, would nurse me back to health whenever I lost control and vomited or collapsed into hysterics. One night I walked down to a fountain at the Kansas Art Institute. I stuck my head in the water and tried to drown myself. It didn't work so I walked home, cold and wet, and I started drinking some more. It was the last of several attempts to end my life.

I made a lot of mistakes when I was younger, struggled with a lot of grief, and unhealthy coping habits. Those habits cost me a few of my loved ones. It took me a while to figure out that I was destroying my life by drinking myself to death. Unfortunately, by the time I'd sobered up, I'd already robbed myself of my youth. I guess this shows in Forest Life. The general consensus seems to be that I write like a young man forced to suffer the grief of someone much older. Much of the story is a testament to the power of grief -- it's ability to render life an aimless blur of suffering.

When I was writing the book I tried to counter my observation of grief with an antidote -- that antidote being love. People often ask me about faith, about my disbelief in a deity, about where I stand on theological views. The truth is that I don't have much faith, and maybe this is because of the grief I endured all those years. I don't have faith in the traditional sense, in the sense that I believe some narrative to be true and chuck full of answers. However, I do have faith in an unconventional sense, at least I attempt to have faith. I attempt to have faith in goodness, in love, and compassion. I try to have faith that believing in a particular explanation for this mess down here on planet earth is less important than choosing to believe in the infallibility of love.

In Forest Life I'm very honest about the power of suffering, and its ability to strip a person of the will to live. It may not do my own grief justice, I don't know, but I attempt to honestly convey the nature of my own suffering. In the midst of this chaos I believe there's goodness to be found.

From the Inside Flap
Forest Life is a refreshing and rewarding read, dark and provocative in parts, but bursting with emotion and life. It is a modern elegy, recalling the mournfulness and sadness of human existence while it simultaneously draws on the beauty of nature. Crash demonstrates rare wisdom and insight for his age. Crash is a brilliant young writer, and I'll be keeping an eye open for his next novel.
- Travis Warren Cooper

A tremendous novel about love and loss, life and death.
By ARM
As I read the harrowing opening chapters of Forest Life by Shane Crash I was reminded of Nirvana's unplugged cover of 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' There is that perfect moment at the end of the performance where Kurt Cobain's voice breaks, giving way to a haunting guttural sigh that hangs in the air. However heartbreaking, there is an intrinsic beauty in the moment's emotional purity. Forest Life often captures such a feeling. It opens on a young man named Emmett who retreats to the woods of Tennessee to contemplate love and loss, life and death. In Forest Life the loss of a loved one hangs like a woodland canopy over the narrator, darkening his vision even more than the American Honey whiskey he uses to self-medicate. From his pain-addled perspective, the only viable exit is suicide. In this work, a pearl handled straight razor is Chekov's gun. However, this is not a novel about suicide, and any attempt to characterize it as such is a failure of vision. Despite the blood pumping through his broken heart, the narrator can already be seen as dead. Thus the narrative is about resurrection and rising out of hell. "Everyone who lives and loves is a phoenix," the narrator often recalls.

There is a spiritual element in Forest Life, sometimes embraced and sometimes denied. Within the novel there is poignant empathy as the main character sees his pain mirrored in back alleys filled with the hurting homeless as well as in the faces of pew sitters in a Baptist church, as if we are all one, trying to understand our suffering and put a God shaped puzzle together. When it comes to the belief in God, there is a certain empirical curiosity, at times the narrator rails at God and Heaven and then in other moments succumbs to its seduction:

"I can't help but confess to myself that the author of creation must be very lovely to have created mountains, oceans and forests. My ever-shifting view of whether "God" does or doesn't exist does not feel like something that can ever be resolved in me."

The faith in Forest Life is a cautious one. It presents itself as a primal force revealed in the stars, in the mountains, and especially in the forests where the narrator sojourns to find answers. He observes:

"Nights like these cause a black loneliness. The shadows of the trees sweep over me and I swear some elemental force is attempting to comfort me. It is then that "something," some imperceptible piece of my brain considers putting itself back together, but I try to resist it."

Invariably there will be those that will focus on the occasional expletives or depictions of sex and herald (or deride) this work as some sort of edgy Christian fiction, the literary equivalent of a pastor in ripped blue jeans and an Affliction t-shirt. Such a view would be inappropriately shallow; the depth of emotional honesty of Forest Life is what should be embraced by both believers and non-believers. It is refreshing to find a faith-colored work that is stripped of external cliché, to get to the spiritual blood and guts. This courageous work offers a candid admission that even for believers there are no easy answers, and worn Bible verses can only go so far. The novel equally admits that cold rationality offers no solace in the face of suffering.

Above all, Forest Life is a book about love. Love acts as a balance to the deep despair. The novel is at its most spiritual when presenting the idea that at the end of the day, despite loss and pain and suffering, love ultimately wins. It brought to my mind the oft-quoted Bible verse: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Unfortunately flippant overuse on sporting event signs and bumper stickers has robbed this statement of its incredible power. However, at its root there is the idea that God's great love compels him to descend to wallow with us in our own shit and save us from our own living hell. This same, self-sacrificing love is on display in Forest Life. Even though the narrator tries to remove himself to lurk in his own self-loathing, others intrude into his black despair, carrying the light of love. It is a redemptive act that taps into the undercurrent of resurrection.

Forest Life is at its best when the text invokes existential navel-gazing. The prose is rich and alive, with page after page offering brilliant quotes. ("I'm unable to join my love - alone in the alone.") Unfortunately, the dialogue occasionally fails to manifest the same finesse and subtlety. This is a small quibble, for what is in its entirety, a masterful piece of writing, full of raging emotion and quiet contemplation. Forest Life is easily the best fiction this year, and Shane Crash is one of the best new American authors. Forest Life is a tremendous achievement and a must read.

A review by a guy who loves classic literature, but not in a hipster sort of way to impress people...
By Jared Hamline
It was a cloudy day, so of course I was listening to Billy Corgan on Pandora. It's a nice array of Billy Corgan, The Cure, Muse, Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and the like. Then, what so happens to drop in my lap (and by 'lap' I mean 'email box'), but a copy of Shane Crash's "Forest Life". What an excellent mixture of sorts! Gloomy weather, an angsty soundtrack, and Shane's first full fledged novel.

"Forest Life" is about Emmett, a young man in his early 20's who experiences the loss of his love, Lenai, and has completely settled on the idea of ending it all at a cabin in Paris, Tennessee by the beatiful Kentucky Lake and the forest surrounding it. The first few pages and randomly throughout the book, it felt strangely reminiscent of one my favorite poems by Edgar Allen Poe, "Ulalume". "Ulalume" is a lyrical poem about an anguished and lonely man who finds himself wandering to lake of Auber where his love died the year before. And by having read (and loved) that poem, I believe they have much in common.

"The skies they were ashen and sober; The leaves they were crisp and sere-The leaves they were withering and sere; It was night in the lonesome October Of my most immemorial year; It was hard by the dim lake of Auber, In the misty mid region of Weir-It was down by the dank tarn of Auber, In the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir." -E. Poe-

We are introduced to Emmett by his entering of the cabin and his deciding in some sort of morbid contentment, "This is a nice place to die". Then, what follows, is a tour through the mind of a troubled and desperate man, drinking to forget his pain and waiting for the perfect time to drag a French straight razor down his arm and bid this pitiful world adieu. Well... maybe not a "perfect time" so much as the courage to do so. He can't seem to drink himself to death, so he is left with his thoughts as he wanders the lake in a drunken state. He is an exceptionally astute young man and very self aware. What we gradually learn about Emmett, is that he is afraid to rebuild himself out of fear that it means getting over his lost love.

It's a wonderful coincidence to find that "Forest Life" and Edgar Allen Poe have two recurring themes, that is death and love. What surprised me the most with Shane's novel was the second theme, love. Because what you would presume to be a novel of suicide and lost love, there also is predominantly, a love story. Though, a bit mushy and juvenile at times (the two of them ARE in their early 20's), it is what gives us any hope that Emmett may make it to the end of the novel. Despite what could blossom into a healing and loving relationship, Emmett's constant wall building, over-thinking, and alcoholism constantly gets in the way. But, yet, you still want to champion what the relationship could be and not what it may turn out to be in the end...dead in the water.

The interal monologue that occurs makes you very aware that Emmett doesn't have an affinity for many things in American culture. Which, if you know Shane or have read his past works, there is a great big ol' helping of satire and social commentary. Nothing seems to be off limits or overlooked. Social trends, money, movies and music references, and most of all science, all seem to make appearances throughout. But, American "Christianity" and faith in God seem to take the cake.

Struggles with belief and disbelief in God are as big of a battle internally for him, as much as the alcoholism that plagues him externally. By no means is this a "Christian novel" (or what I refer to as "Diet Literature"). It is a struggling balance of death and love and things that sway that invisible scale, whether those things are religion, politics, family, or anything else.

In all honesty, this novel is a self reflection of the man who is writing it. A confession to the world of the things that has plagued him for years of his existence and still does to this day. Emmett just plays an apparatus to the author, to reveal his brokeness and thoughts. It's raw and there are times you don't cheer for Emmett. There are times you wonder why he keeps on going. He's selfish, pessimistic, and nihilistic. But, there are some moments when you see his true self shine through and find redeeming qualities to him. And honestly, how are we that much different than him? We are more self concerned than what we give ourselves credit for, at least the guy is honest.

All in all, this book lived up to the personal hype that I built up in me when I heard Shane was writing it. The story, despite some of its darker content, was quite refreshing and I felt very satisfied after reading it. I could keep going on and on about symbolism in the book, the social commentary, recurring themes, winks, nudges, and inside jokes, but this is a review, not an analysis. For this being Shane Crash's first true novel, I have to say... It's a hell of a start and am looking forward to more quality works like this in the future. I can't tell you what wins in the end, death or love, in the story of Emmett. But, if you get the book, something tells me you'll find out.

" Forest Life: by Shane Crash "...radical, scandalous redemptive imagination
By the Weary Pilgrim
For years I have been exploring the idea of faith on the fringe of church-ianity and beyond. I like to explore what I call, " radical, scandalous redemptive imagination." I believe our old maps are worn out, in a landscape that has changed dramatically, and continues to undergo rapid change...old maps can not take us into new lands. I believe poets, story tellers and artists have the uncanny ability to be new world prophets...to resurrect old myths, create new metaphors to recapture the imagination of humanity towards a horizon of hope.

Shane Fulgrum ( Crash ), is a new world prophet. I was away from the computer, cell phone and all forms of social media last week and immersed my self into a draft copy of Shane's upcoming book, " Forest Life."

Shane said, this as to " Why I Wrote Forest Life "...

Even after all this time, I still don't know how to live. There are moments here and there when I understand some of the things that I need to live. I need good friendship. I need to write and I need quiet emptiness. Unfortunately, I still spend too much time thinking about things that make my brain bleed. Sometimes I just think so much that my brain will shut itself down in a futile attempt at self-preservation. I haven't been able to transcend my frustration and anger for society and its inability to match up with my ideals. My ideals being peaceful coexistence and productive progress. Some people reconcile this sadness by telling themselves that God's gonna come back and fix things up real nice. I want to believe nice things like restorative theology, but I just can't. I am understanding of those who subscribe to comforting narratives. I'd rather not see the world as cruel and chaotic, but I digress. Hence, my attempts to understand how I should live in a world that doesn't make sense.

Although Forest Life is almost entirely fictional, the frustration and struggle of the lead character often mirrors my own irreconcilable sadness and confusion. Existence is a strange thing. It was on a cabin porch in the Tennessee dusk, nearly three years when I realized that my experience was a universal dilemma for conscious freethinkers. And so as the sky grew salty and the winds picked up, the rain began to fall through a halo sunrise and I found my story - the story of Emmett.

I have had the opportunity to follow Shane through his website, and musings on Facebook...he thinks deeply, he struggles and wrestles with life, any idea of faith can not be contained to a building, a book or any system of salvation. Shane's musing are messy...sometimes it looks like vomit on a page. They may not be attractive, but, they are shockingly real.

" Me? I'm afraid if God does exist, if there is a creator, he's just as confused about life and death and love as I am. Mostly I'm afraid that I'll continue to exist after I die."
" Why are you afraid of that?"

I'm silent for a moment. I collect my thoughts and wait for the desperation to recede.

" If I do continue to exist, if my reality and perception continues on in some other plane, it means that everything happening here means something. I'm worried I won't figure out what it all means in time. Sometimes I feel like I'm doomed to screw it up and be punished for it. Maybe I'm already being punished." I can hear the emotion in my own voice, making it a shade huskier. I wonder if Maraye notices. ( Forest Life, page 64-64 )

Emmett, is the main character in this story, and if we're honest we'll see a bit of Emmett is us, or in the friends around us. If we're honest Emmett's story is " our " story...a story deeply embedded in life, and the struggle to make sense of life, here, now...and somehow beyond.

This was probably one of the most faith-filled books I have read in a long time...maybe somewhere along side " William P. Young's, The Shack." If you have all your theology nicely sorted out in your " God-box ", this book will stretch you...maybe get rid of your box all together. This book looks at guilt, forgiveness, hope, redemption, love, pain, suffering, death, life, heaven, hell...but it does it not in a nicely mapped out theological landscape...it does it in the messiness and chaos of real life.
There were times I was reading and I had to remind myself that this is the writing of a 25 year old young man. Shane is wise beyond his years...he is a wise spiritual sage in a young man's clothes. For the life of me, I can't remember wrestling with such thoughts at a young age.

Before I sleep I normally lie awake and think of the future. I've resolved I can't understand life the way I can understand an equation or formula. For so long I've wanted to find concrete answers or die trying. It's hard at first to find comfort in not knowing or to make peace with it. But I think it is the only way to make it in this life. Getting stuck on a question only makes me estranged from the world. ( Forest Life, page 174 )

I can not say enough about this book...buy it, buy a copy for friends...have conversations over coffee, re-kindle some redemptive imagination, discover a new kind of faith in the midst of this profound human drama called life.

Oh yeah, Shane said this about writing the book...

" When I started writing Forest Life, I was suicidal and drunk because I had lost someone I love to a tragedy. Afterward, my question was this: why love when death and suffering are inevitable? I won't reveal my solution to this problem, but I do present it in the pages of the book. These are only a few of the issues I grapple with in the story and I hope that you'll read the story and consciously address your own uncertainty and fear."

FINALIST OF THE BOOK OF THE YEAR (BOTYA) AWARD 2012 -ForeWord Reviews
A New York woman helps an overly optimistic friend pursue her secret crush on the West Coast, embarking on a picaresque, funny and touching trip that will spiral into chaos.
The year is 2005. The Congress has just approved the war in Iraq and many New Yorkers are fed up with the American Dream and thinking of fleeing the country. Kitty Roman is one of them. She is disenchanted with the superficiality of the news industry in which she works, and in love she suffers from the malaise of her generation, the fear of landing and settling down. She packs to return to her native Europe, yet, a last minute chance encounter with an eccentric, overly optimistic artist, Desert Rose makes her embark impulsively on the trip of her lifetime -- to the West Coast. The accidental odd couple takes us on a fascinating and sometimes hilarious journey from New York, filled with intellectual and artistic elites, to Los Angeles with its complicated movie moguls and bohemian art community. Although they have different views about love, life, and the American Dream -- one still believes in its magic and one doesn't -- at the end of the road they both follow their true passion.
A gripping page turner in which self-irony and lucidity blend wonderfully with lyrical interludes, Dream Junkies offers the reader a deconstructed view of today's American Dream and an uplifting story of spiritual revival.

Review
Dream Junkies comes across as a forty years' later response to Erica Jong's Fear of Flying. ...Ares is a terrific writer; shrewd in observation and smoothly descriptive in prose and dialogue.
SAN FRANCISCO BOOK REVIEW

A rollicking romp from East Coast to West with two free-spirited and artistic young women...with running themes of the demise of art for commercialism and the comparison of communism vs. capitalism.
US REVIEW OF BOOKS

In this entertaining novel, Ares sends New Yorkers Kitty Roman and Desert Rose on a whirlwind trip to Los Angeles in search of fun and fortune. While Desert Rose's pursuit of uncommitted boyfriend Charlie becomes increasingly frantic, Kitty finds her own wish for nonattachment conflicting with her desire to live life passionately. Amid the book's humorous side glances at pompous New York types and commercialism running rampant in the Los Angeles art world, Kitty's belief in fateful encounters pits her heart against what she terms the good-enough sense of commitment.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

I really loved this book. Everyone who lives in this country, immigrant and native born, can appreciate the struggle of wanting to find your niche here. This book is part friendship story and part self-soul searching story, has a little of everything. It has funny parts. It has sad parts. It has parts that will make you think.
A BOOKISH AFFAIR

In this analytical slice-of-life illustrating how romantic struggles know no borders... The alternately glamorous and gritty glimpses of L.A. and the consistently strong, realistic dialogue give . the well-paced novel a cinematic feel
KIRKUS INDIE REVIEW

A novel above its literary gender...Kitty, the main character, is well-versed in theater, knows something about politics, and makes an interesting parallel between the communism totalitarism in USSR and the capitalist one in the US...A cool American adventure like ride the storm for go-west postmodern amazons.
TIME OUT

The string of American adventures that Alexandra Ares devours in her book has some of the European interwar flavor and mystery described by Anglo Saxon writers of that era. This time the roles have reversed: an European discovers America. She is a sensitive, romantic and sometimes cynical writer, but surely courageous.ION COCHINESCU Author
I enjoyed it. Great character development...Couldn't stop reading the book. I was looking for the next Kitty conversation about fine art or about Manhattan or Romanian politics or the differences in dating in the U.S. versus Europe.
THE ARDENT READER

From the Author
If you liked the groundbreaking novel "Fear of Flying" by Erica Jong, a mix of comedy and drama, of romance and ideas, then I hope you'll enjoy Dream Junkies.

Written in 2005-2006, Dream Junkies is about two love stories on the backdrop of a decaying American Dream, and it foreshadowed the financial meltdown of 2008, before the OWS movement brought certain issues to the forefront of American public speech. This is why Dream Junkies was first published in translation in Europe, where it waas a best seller.

A Dream Deferred?
By Meg @ A Bookish Affair
Kitty, an immigrant from Romania who has been in the States for quite awhile, is in search of the much storied American Dream. A chance meeting with an Iranian artist who calls herself Desert Rose confirms for Kitty that obtaining the American Dream may not be that out of reach. Desert Rose isn't so sure of that herself. They'll travel from NYC to LA in search of their different ideals of what the American Dream is supposed to be.

I really enjoyed this book. I think everyone who lives in this country, immigrant and native born, can appreciate the struggle of wanting to find your niche here in this country. We're told that if we go after what we want, we can have it. This is supposed to be the land of opportunity where if you have a desire, you have the freedom to go after it. It sounds simple enough,no? Unfortunately as Kitty and Desert Rose find out, it's not that easy to get, let alone figure out what exactly the American Dream is to each of us. It's more trial and error than we think it is. You really feel for their situation and they are definitely two characters that I found myself rooting for throughout the book. This book is part friendship story and part self soul searching story.

This book has a little of everything. It has funny parts. It has sad parts. It has parts that will make you think. It's hard to quantify the overall feeling of the book. As you may have counted, this will be the third book that I've reviewed by Alexandra Ares and one thing that is consistent among all three of the books is that they have great dialogue. It's really realistic and well written. The writing itself is good but it's the dialogue that really keeps the books going along. That is true for all of the books, especially for Dream Junkies.

Bottom line: This is a fun ride that looks at some big questions.

Perceptively written...
By Sergiu Pobereznic (author)
This is the story of a Romanian immigrant, Kitty, who had been pursuing her dream in America, "The American Dream", as it is so often referred to. The belief that each individual can, through hard work and strength of mind, achieve anything the heart and mind desires.
But her dream has become a distant ghost. She has ended up in the rut of 'real' life, which seems to have left a bitter taste. She decides to leave it all and return to the place she knows best... Romania.
But before leaving she decides to have one final road trip, a impulsive fling into the vast American expanse and see what life has to offer before giving it all up. Her "Goodbye America Trip". And so the story begins, and it does so with a great opening line:

"Most times when I'm out on a date, I feel like an actress on stage giving a great performance in a second-rate theatre."

There are many human encounters on this trip that Kitty undertakes with both sad and comical consequences. The author manages to bring to light quite a few home truths about relationships during the journey by asking some big life focused questions.
This exposes the fact that many people are in love with the 'dream' and not 'reality'. The 'idea' of something can be extremely powerful.
She even manages to discuss politics without losing the reader in the process. No easy feat.

The author introduces weight and gravitas to this naturally meandering story by way of some lovely philosophical moments coupled with beautiful metaphors and analogies. Here is just one such moment that I enjoyed:

"The car left and started the one way ride into black empty space. They were like two different planets, a big blue one and a tiny golden one, from two solar systems, that came close to each other for the first time in a thousand years or so. Now, each planet was going back to its own orbit. Following a course that was going to take them farther and farther away from each other. "

And here are some thoughts on life and love:

"Any person has been both, a junky and the drug, at one point or another in their life."

I couldn't agree more.

Just one more:

"The betrayal of your soul is death."

Excellent, and to the point.

Along the length of the story there are also references to literary greats - that might go unnoticed to some - such as the bard himself, Shakespeare. Personally, I would like more of this and the interesting philosophical slant the author applies to her writing, because she does this so well. However, I do understand that her literature is geared towards a specific kind of genre and reader.

In this novel the reader could have easily encountered scenes of a sexual nature, but the author cleverly avoided the unnecessary, simply by alluding to the obvious. I am glad of this. A good move; there is nothing worse than cheap titillation getting in the way, unless it is actually necessary to move the story forward.

There is a fantastical aspect to the story, which in the case of this novel is for the purpose of escapism and it does exactly that. I am no expert on this type of genre, but I am glad that the effect is achieved with a little spiritual backing and some peppering of cerebral profundity.

What is the crux of this story?
For me, it is that we all want and need the same thing - to be Happy. And happiness is not wealth or material things. So what is happiness?
Happiness = Love.

What have I learned about Love?
I have learned that you must leave the past behind and take a chance in the moment. Be in the present. Allow randomness to work its magic. Be swept away.
It is better to experience love for a moment than not at all.
These are things we all know or are aware of, but it is good to be reminded.

Though Love comes in many guises and seems so difficult to attain, remember that it is also one of the most common happenings on our planet - always just around the corner.
Love is like the stars in the night sky- when one is born another one dies.
Which begs the question: Why is it so difficult to find Love? Is it our fault when we fail to find it? Do we try too hard? And do we possess the wrong motivation?

At one point in the novel the author said: "Working to live and not living to work."
It made me think. I realized that many people do the latter throughout their lives. This is such a waste of life, especially if you have a choice to do otherwise. This is not something I have ever done, but I find it sad that other people do.

This book is written well, which made it a breeze to read. For this reason I believe the work deserves four stars.
So, if you want to read a book about gambling everything you know and trust for Love, then this is the book.

Love with the improper stranger
By Amanda Richards
When the American Dream doesn't seem to be happening for Kitty after 7 years, she starts filling boxes with her earthly belongings in preparation for a return to Bucharest, but still lives in hope of a last minute reprieve, whether career-wise or in the romance department.

Along comes an eccentric artist who befriends her, and persuades her to leave the familiar grind of Manhattan for an unplanned trip to LA. Shortly after their departure, Kitty discovers that her friend Desert Rose has made no firm arrangements for any part of the trip, which soon deteriorates into a fiasco (and adventure) of monumental proportions. An eternal optimist, Desert Rose is oblivious to the chaos, as she doggedly pursues her own dream no matter what the consequences.

When everything looks hopeless, a chance meeting turns Kitty on her head (and back) and soon she too, is ensnared in her own dreams for happiness.

Another character-driven story from Alexandra Ares, filled with her distinctive twists and unusual points of view. Recommended for readers tired of the same old, same old rom-coms and dramedies.
