A life I'd leave behind....
By VonnPetr
I was a fan of Anita back in the days of album rock radio. I loved her on-air personality. She was blunt, funny and real. I really put her on a pedestal as a person with integrity because I couldn't imagine anyone with such an open demeanor and what sounded like good ole' brutal honestly could not have it. I've been a rock and roll fan since a very early age, and her enthusiasm was right up there with my own. However, I found myself getting very disappointed as I read this. Some of the things she describes even BEFORE her "romp" through rock n' roll beds disturbs me. You can forget about just having fun, there's borderline criminal activity. And there's a total lack of emotion for these activities.

She is very much the man in describing the bedroom antics of the "rockstars" she's been with. The drug use descriptions are equally sad...as you can say that it was normal in that sector at that time, it still shows lack of self-respect/esteem. Plus toppled with moral disregard to her sexual activities with more married men that not. She talks about lust, but she doesn't cover much of (if any) insight to any other deeper emotional feelings. And doesn't seem to even feel much emotion toward the one person she did seem to love...yet left.

How does a person write about such a shallow life and not wake up and want more? Not to say she should want what others have...we all are free to take our own path. But to perhaps reflect with some type of understanding that it was a part of youth...and its in the past...and to realize that she made some questionable choices instead of being proud of these events. This would seem to have made for a more well-rounded story. And one that would show self-respect...(something that gets respect.)

I feel this is the thing that bothers me the most about this book; that in the end, there's no revelations, remorse or wisdom gained. And I can't imagine that the rock idols who she saw in a circular motion over the years haven't lost appeal to her...especially after being so used by them. Instead she states a desire to 'live it all again'. In light of her descriptions, to say that I don't understand how someone could possibly feel that way, is an understatement. I hope that somewhere down the line, she starts liking herself more than this.

Entertaining, but........
By Judith
This autobiography of a 1970s - 1980s Philadelphia DJ reminded me a lot of Pamela DeBarres infamous groupie bio, I'm With the Band. I have to admit the book was entertaining, even though I really ended up disliking and not respecting the author.

For me the Philadelphia aspect was a lot of fun. Even though the author is older than I am, and was fired from Philly radio before my time, I still recognize many of the places and addresses talked about in the book. The author grew up in a cookie cutter copy of the Levittown home of one of my close friends, so I could totally picture the scenes she described from her childhood. I suspect many of the people who will read this book will be people from Philadelphia who remember her and will enjoy the amount of Philly detail in the book. Others won't give a hoot about her apartment on Rittenhouse Square, and may even be annoyed by all the addresses she includes.

My main problem with the author is her total lack of morals, and I am NOT just talking about sexual morals. Example; the author and her sister lived in Vegas for a while. They didn't have jobs. They would go to hotels and casinos and flirt with older male tourists. They got these men to wine and dine them, and then when the men were tipsy or not paying attention the girls would steal their gambling chips and cash them in for rent money. She seems to think this was cute and clever; I think it's theft.

The author slept her way around the rock world without any regard for whether the men had wives or committed relationships. One could say that these men were responsible for their own fidelity, but the author took it a step further. At the early stages of an affair with Warren Zevon Ms. Gevinson knew he was married and had a toddler daughter. Still she showed up at his home where his wife and child were. His wife was fully aware of the sexcapades the author had with her husband. Still Ms. Givenson sat down at their table, ate the food Crystal Zevon had prepared, and then left with Zevon for an evening of drugs. And, she wonders why the wife was "frosty." Such in her face behavior was vicious and slutty. Oh yeah, it also shows what a jerk Zevon was.

Throughout the book Ms Givenson describes sexual encounters she had with various 70s and 80s rock stars--and describe them she does, in rather too much detail. If a man has sex with a woman and then engages in locker room talk with his buddies we call him a louse. It should be the same for females. Sleep with whatever consenting adult you want, but revealing details about preferences and anatomy is a violation of trust that should be sacred between sexual partners. I cannot respect her beyond kiss and tell revelations--and yes, I do realize some people reading this review will now immediately buy the book. LOL However, be aware that it has been 25+ years since these encounters happened. Or, did they? I believe she had the affair with Zevon. She has the pictures in the book that prove that. The others are more iffy. There is a fantasy quality about the way she describes many of these encounters. I simply had the feeling that many of these events have grown in her mind over the decades. They are all just too perfect and she remembers too much detail to be reality. The pictures she includes of these guys are almost all obviously posed pictures taken at the radio station or concerts. Also, to be blunt about it, the author is on the homely side of average. I find it hard to believe these men, who could have any girl they want, would be as gaga over her as she wants us to believe. I had the sense tha whatever encounters she really did have were much less involved than she wants to believe. Read it for fun, but don't put too much stock in what she says.

About a third of the pictures are upside down! That is just plain shoddy. Second, throughout the book spaces between words are missing, running two words together. (Likethis) This is not just a few missing spaces. This happens more than a few times on each page. Again, really shoddy. I don't know if the upside down pictures and missing spaces are just in the Kindle edition, or in the physical book as well. For Kindle users, there are no navigation tools in this book whatsoever. None. You have to page through it one page at a time. If you want to see a picture again, you'll have to page to it. These issues would be acceptable in one of those $1.99 Kindle cheapies, but this is a full priced ebook.

I wish I hadn't given this author any of my money. I feel like one of those tourists in Vegas she scammed for their chips.

Differant strokes for differant folks
By Richard Sterling Harris
A quick but entertaining ride made a connection with me since I grew up in Philadelphia and listened to the radio stations she worked for. Anita was about 2 years older than I and about a light year more uninhibited. There's been some comment on her morals which are way out there on the wild side ... but they are hers and don't have to be the same as anyone else's. They might cross over many lines but they don't cross over into evil (as I see it). Frankly she liked to have sex with rock stars and they wanted to have sex with her... so she did, sometimes at a moment's notice. And while I might think it more proper to keep it on the down low .... hey, it happened and if she wants to tell it, she will. Yes, she is not a 10, but she makes a cute girl and is obviously by her history, fun to be around and a respectable temporary companion. It did crack me up opening the book and seeing the double line spacing as if this was the only way we were going to get this book to look like a full sized book. She basically ends her story in 1986 and wraps up the rest in the next 3 pages. I would have kept on reading.
