I wish this book had been available when I was writing my college and graduate papers. I found the real life examples helpful and insightful. Writing is Dialogue: Why Our Kids Write Backwards and How to Fix Them developed after years of listening to my students' frustration with formulaic writing. The non-inspirational formats of the five-paragraph essay and its ilk encourage neither thinking nor passion. Instead, this book argues for an expanded, graduated writing program based on skills, explaining how inductive approaches can improve the quality of English writing and instruction.
About the Author
Jeff House teaches English, art history and journalism at Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory School. The recipient of several NEH grants, he has been recognized by Stanford University and San Jose State University for his teaching methods. A Teacher Consultant for the San Jose Area Writer's Project and a lecturer and reader for College Board, Jeff has received a number of teaching awards and published in such periodicals as English Journal and Journal of American Culture. Jeff received his MA in English Literature from San Jose State University.

Best instructional book for writing!

Teaching high school English had one struggle for me, teaching writing. Like most people for whom writing comes naturally, I had difficulty instructing my students how to write in ways that had nothing to do with formulaic writing. Along came Jeff House and his book, Writing is Dialogue, and suddenly I had a great tool at my fingertips. This book does not read like a dry, formulaic manual. Instead, Jeff gives pertinent examples from teaching his own students and helps to clarify how to encourage young writers develop their own voice. This, along with House's book on archetypes, are revolutionary tools for the classroom. Students will amaze you as you encourage them to write critically, creatively, and most of all, well.
