Very edgy, but overall a pretty good story.

This was an interesting story. When I agreed to review it, I was told it was edgy. Not kidding there. My eyebrows raised about twenty times, and for me that's a lot of brow twitching. I wasn't expecting strong swear words, or detailed scenes of child abuse, though they did make the story more emotionally powerful. I did enjoy the story overall, though their was some head hopping and a few tangents that took away from the overall quality of the novel. If the point of view had been more solid and the swearing toned down, it would have been a stronger book. However, the story was still good and I could see the author's heart for the hurting people in this world--especially young, abused women--so I commend her for that. It's not an easy beach read, but it does have a powerful message. Hearts don't get much harder than Jo's, but sometimes God will send along the very person who can soften that heart and heal it from the overwhelming pain caused from being victimized by someone who was supposed to love you and protect you. That's what Francis did for Jo. He set aside his own wants and needs to minister to her. It was a beautiful love story in that regard. The ending was touching, too. I enjoyed it.

Sometimes a good fantasy is healing.

For a first fiction work by this author, its a very readable smooth work. I downloaded the sample chapter on Kindle and definitely wanted to return for more.
The primary character, Jo,is intriguing and street smart. Despite having suffered severe childhood abuse she is quite serious about not being victimized. Her character development feels well done, creating a complex woman who deals cautiously but steadily with the painful shadows of her past and does what she can to heal and protect herself. One of Jo's strengths is her personal discipline and compassion for others not treated well on the streets. The author does an excellent job in respectfully portraying the suble ways in which Jo's background has deeply influenced her lifestyle and social interactions. In many ways, Jo and her reactions are quite believable.
The male character feels a little more fantastic to me, but he clearly shows some wisdom in the steady way he gains Jo's trust. Actually, he's not a bad dream character. Rather amazing in fact. To me he feels a little too good to be true but to the author's credit, she also creates some complexities and idiosyncracies for him that help to "keep his feet on the ground". For some, the process of experiencing this story specifically as a fantasy might in fact be healing, especially if they seek Cristian romance stories.
I will admit that the latter is not especially my interest. Even so I felt the author was not aggressive with evangelical portions, these were limited to 2 or 3 brief scenes. I appreciated the overall story well enough to continue reading.
Comments Specific to the Kindle Version:
Unlike many I have worked through, this novel did not contain significant textual errors with respect to grammar, spelling etc. There were some format anomalies with the paragraph indentations. These were quite minor and did not distract me for long. At about 67%-70% of the way through the book there was one brief sentence in "faded" type when viewed on my K2. When I looked at this via Kindle for PC -- it actually showed up in red. I am not sure whether added emphasis was intended for this sentence or not. Again. Not enough to worry about.
On the whole, a well done, thoughtful first indie book which might appeal to survivors of incest, those with an appreciation for animal rescue, and those who enjoy christian romance. I look forward to seeing more writing from Donna Anastasi.

Strong emotions will sweep you through this story!

This book does a great job of showing the impact of child abuse once the victim is an adult. Almost all of the story is about how Jo tries to put her life together and the choices she must make as she views the world through the filter of a shattered childhood; very little time is spent detailing the actual abuse. I liked this story because it focused on a very real, often neglected perspective: what happens to the victim once the abuse has ended and they are no longer in the abusive environment? The relationships are powerfully rendered and I found myself wanting Jo to triumph very badly - with someone who is going to help her create a new idea of what a healthy relationship is supposed to be like. This book is likely to make you feel powerful emotions as you fly through it!
