Shootist was written due to popular demand. It seemed like everyone who knows me personally kept up the pressure to write a book on gun fighting. "Teaching people is what you do best, Joe," was a common statement. Many readers of my other books corresponded with questions or requests associated with the contents herein. Still, I hesitated because from my perspective, few people will ever require these skills. Over the last year or so, my opinion changed.

We Americans have a long tradition of excellence with shoulder fired weapons. Throughout much of our history, marksmanship and bravery were enough. Those days are long behind us. Advancements in technology have raised the standard and despite droves of people purchasing military grade weapons, optics and accessories, few people develop the skills necessary to properly utilize these assets.

This book presents the reader with a series of drills and exercises designed to improve the operator's capabilities to the point where they would dominate practically any engagement. The training tools can be assembled with little expense and moderate effort. They will make you better.

I also wanted to focus on topics that are seldom addressed in the shooting world. Nutrition and physical fitness are covered in-depth, as they are part of the survivability equation. Simple, easy to execute exercises that almost anyone can perform are included. You will see remarkable results.

I wrote Shootist for the average person who has mastered the basic functions of their weapon. It assumes the reader has solid remedial skills and a firm understanding of firearms safety. It includes numerous exercises that can be performed in the comfort of one's own home, as well as challenging drills to be executed at the range and open field.

Know Your Tools, Know yourself - Recommended

"The Home Schooled Shootist: Training to Fight with a carbine" is a good starting point for those wanting to do more than static target shooting with their carbine (M4, AR15, AK47, a magazine adapted SKS, etc) and pistol. To that point, this book also covers some pistol training and drills that are quite worthwhile, but optional.

While I highly recommended professional training when available (I am, after all, a certified firearms instructor), it just isn't always practical to take off work or financially feasible for everyone. This book provides some very good training drills that will sharpen your skills and reduce reaction time, all at a fraction of the cost of professional training. The two biggest requirements, besides owning a carbine, are the drive to learn (which is likely why you are considering this book) and place to shoot (a public range will not likely allow this type of training).

Right from the start, the author stress the need to train, measure, and train some more. The goal is to constantly improve your accuracy, speed, and knowledge of both your and your carbine's capabilities. While some of the drills seem simplistic at first, these will indeed help you develop those basic skills you will need to build on to be more proficient. Many of the drills will require additional people, especially the remote controlled targets, and extreme caution should be taken to minimize the danger to your assistants. That being said, the remote control targets is about as much fun as I have ever had training, period.

The only part of the book that was not overly interesting to me was the "Bonus Section, The Nutritional Advantage". I am not a believer in many of the ideas on diet and medicine that the guest author subscribes to and choose to discount most of what is written in this chapter. Fortunately the rest of the book holds up without this section.

Lastly, this book contains some of most concise and easy to understand descriptions of "Mil-Dot" range finding and Minute of Angle (MoA) that I have seen in any source.

Recommended, with the caveat above.

Good book if you want to improve your ability to you use a carbine for self defense. Not a book for beginners. You need to know the basics of your weapon to utilise the training program s in this book.

A lot of "Why didn't I think of that?" material.

“The Home Schooled Shootist” by Joe Nobody is a book that is designed to give you some of the more complicated aspects of shooting in an easy to learn and easy to replicate format. In this book, the author, who goes under a very obvious pseudonym, tries to point out that replication is one of the most important aspects of firearms training. He gives tips and tricks that mimic the outcome of some of the more advanced and expensive military training.

I have read many of the books written by Joe Nobody. While the editing is not always the greatest, the content is very good. The publisher that he usually goes through is a small time, privately owned outfit that does not really sink the money into expensive editors that can catch every tiny, little error on every page. So as I read through I frequently find misspelled words and grammar inconsistencies but I am not a snob with that sort of thing so I tend to judge a book by the value of the content rather than its polished wordsmithing.

Some of the things covered in this book I will admit I already knew. If you have been shooting for a while, chances are you have seen or at least been told about half the book’s content. That’s fine with me as I was interested in the other half that I did not know or even think of.

The book covers nearly everything with tips on how to take what was discussed beyond what was outlined. There were clever tips for shooting from elevation, shooting moving targets, how to properly use cover and concealments, dry fire practices, exercises to add to your workouts to prevent shooter fatigue and much more. A lot of the stuff I read gave me a real “Well, duh!” feeling because I felt like an idiot for not thinking of it beforehand.

Granted, if you are an ex-military, black-ops, super-soldier… this might not have enough for you to get out of it to be worth the money. But for all except that small percentage, I would definitely recommend it. I am not an idiot with a firearm and I still found it very helpful.

Will leave you in anticipation for book two!

Arcadia's Gift is a great read. I normally have a hard time getting into YA fiction because so many feature obsessive, over the top love, and characters out of an Aaron Spelling TV show. But this book had none of that! The love story felt real, with genuine affection between Cady and Bryan. The characters aren't perfect and feel genuine - like kids I knew when I was in high school. And I really liked how her "gift" manifested and her search for an explanation of what was happening to her. Can't wait for the next book to see what happens next!

Warning: You will not be able to put this book down

I picked up the Kindle edition of Jesi's book when it was on sale for $0.99 and couldn't put it down for the rest of the day. From the very first page, I was drawn into Cady's world and didn't want to leave. Be warned though: If you like a good character-driven story, you will not be able to put this book down.

Cady is a refreshingly down-to-earth teen. Neither overly melodramatic, nor overly heroic, she feels like a realistic teen voice and someone I would have enjoyed hanging out with as a teenager. This book focuses on the relationships in Cady's life and how they are affected by the death of a family member, while she comes to terms with her new power and how to manage it. The pacing and characterization are good, the narrative draws you in. The plot felt a bit thin at a crucial point in the story where Cady discovers something new about her power, but the characterization carried me through.

I'm looking forward to the next book in this trilogy!

OMG! I loved it!

I knew I was going to like this story when I read the description. I was wrong. I freakin' loved it! I read the entire book in one go, even though it meant staying up until 2:00 in the morning to finish it. I could NOT put it down.

I was hooked from the beginning. I felt as if I were there witnessing the horrific accident that launches the story. Ms. Ryan has a gift for setting a scene through the characters' eyes, without resorting to a laundry list of descriptions (a pet peeve of mine).

Arcadia or "Cady" as she prefers to be called, felt very real to me. She was easy to like and empathize with.

The paranormal aspect of the story felt very organic and natural. The romance between Cady and Bryan developed quickly but realistically (it is a YA romance, afterall).

Bryan is such a sweetheart! My inner-teen is more than a little in love with the boy. He's hot but doesn't know it, sensitive but masculine, brave but not reckless, self-sacrificing but not self-righteous and absolutely perfect for Cady.

The only thing that bothered me was the introduction of a love triangle after I'd already fallen for Bryan. I'm hoping it's a result of a supernatural attraction and that Cady realizes she belongs with Bryan in the next book.

I was ready to dismiss Cane (Bryan's competition) as just another one-dimensional, self-absorbed super-jock, but the scene in the parking lot when he explains what happened the night of the accident and his resulting guilt turned him into a "real" person. I definitely empathize with him and hope he finds redemption -- as long as it's not in Cady's arms ;-)

The minor characters were developed perfectly. They felt real, without detracting from the main storyline. It was easy to imagine their untold back stories from the brief glimpses I got when Cady interacted with them. I'd love to read more of Aaron's story.

I highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary YA romance as well as paranormal romance. If you like Sarah Dessen's books, you'll love Arcadia's Gift.

Hysterical Nouveau Travel Saga

The first time I read The Counterfeit Brit it tickled me into fits of laughter as it traipsed into the International Youth Hostel world of the San Francisco of lore hippyqueerevolutionary, multi-cultural Diaspora pilgrimage by the backpackers of the world. It is a must read for anyone who has ever done the international travel on the cheap napsacker bag. It is essential reading for those who just wished and wondered about the thing. It is full of hysterical fun and, speaking from experience far better in the tale-ing than the living it. So the cost of the book is a cosmic bargain.
The second pass through it, I admired greatly Eisenwolf's gift for gab almost as much as her mean story craft and wicked turns of phrases- on a dime and always leaving changes.
A deeper level is also optionally available of prat-tagonist Rebecca’s self-discovery and the universal wrestle with identity. It proves up what a Zen master once told me that if you are looking for your self, just start imitating a human being and pretty soon you will realize you have become one.
The Counterfeit Brit is a human saga & being well worth the acquaintance - and ticket. Do I see a movie looming? Hell yes!

Poignant, intelligent, a complete riot

With an unpredictable heroine, as candid as she is crafty, Rebecca Lamb is a smart sneaky rebel, who doesn't realize she's craving honesty until she finds herself in the presence of it. The problem is by the time she does it's too late, because she's already undercover, spiraling down the rabbit hole of her own invention.
Filled with humor and humility, "The Counterfeit Brit" is a richly layered and spirited story that made me feel like going out and claiming my own ninth inning.

I Want A Sequel!!

I loved this book! I don't even know where to begin, so I'll just jump into it. This is a deep, light-hearted journey of self-discovery without being too heavy or preachy, all the while, never losing its relatability . As I was reading it, I felt like I wanted to hang out in a cafe with Rebecca Lamb and hear her stories while we pondered the the mysteries of identity together-- that's how relatable she is. Furthermore, as I was reading, I felt like I was watching an Indie romantic comedy. It has that mysterious pace that Indie movies have where you're completely intrigued to see what happens next, but it never resorts to shock. What happens next is always a revelation, sometimes deep, sometimes hilarious. We've all wanted to be someone else at one point, if only out of curiosity. Rebecca really had the guts to do it, even if she did feel cornered into it. What I love the most about this book is that it left me pondering... Rebecca, while pretending to be someone else, is the most authentic. Meanwhile, the world is full of people who fancy themselves to be "real" (any crappy reality t.v. show or crappy top 40 song displays this), but in actuality, they're just posing-- what gorgeous irony! Lastly, I cannot even express how amazing the author's style of expression is. I ended up highlighting certain phrases and insights because she has such an uncanny ability to hit the nail on the head. Bottom line, I want a sequel... I want to know if she's still in touch with her friends, how her trip to India was, etc... I guess I didn't want the story to be over!
