Delightful

In a Sunday in Ordinary Time, Mary Ann Grossman tells the story of
her family who immigrated to the United States in the early 1900's.
From continent to continent and through the generations she captures
the essence of the immigrant experience and familial love with rich and
vivid details.
Her heartwarming memoir, woven like a beautiful tapestry, reveals
that secrets and even betrayal cannot sever the ties that bind us to our
family. Warm and touching, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

When the ordinary becomes extraordinary

Mary Ann Grossman's lovely, loving memoir is a reminder that the story of ordinary families and ordinary people can make for most interesting reading. Ms. Grossman is a fine writer and storyteller. And the tale of her family's immigration from Italy and their -- mostly her -- life here ranges from fascinating to well worth the telling: from a baby left at an Italian doorstep more than a century ago to her own recollections and adventures; facing down the childhood bully; almost losing her life;the painful, hasty escape of Grandpa's decades-ago fiancee when Mary Ann encountered her on a visit to Italy; her years living in Canada; her first-hand experience of 9/11; and, above all, the arresting tale of her courtship and marriage over strong family objections to a loving husband from a totally different background. It's a truly American story -- melting pot and all -- and the single thing I liked best about it was the story of the lie that saved the relationship between her and her husband-to-be, something that made me seriously question the old verity that honesty is the best policy. Maybe mostly, but certainly not always, as the Grossman's story makes clear. It's a beautifully-told family history with a heart-warming happy ending.

Rich and Warm Story

What a delightful book! I have read many memoirs, and although, like all of us, Mary Ann and her family have happiness and tragedies in their lives, one leaves this book with a positive and light feeling. I have known Mary Ann for many years but learned so many things about her that I never knew. It is a story rich in details and nuance and fun to read. Thanks, Mary Ann, for sharing with us!

Anya Versteeg had been just a teenager when Hitler's troops invaded her homeland of Holland in May of 1940. Forced to grow up much too fast, the feisty preacher's daughter eagerly immersed herself in the Dutch Resistance and its many efforts to thwart the enemy. Certain that God had turned His back on Holland, she closed her heart and did whatever she had to do to save her country before it was too late.

By 1945, the people of Occupied Holland were starving. Born in Texas and raised in Oklahoma, Diane Hale Moody is a graduate of Oklahoma State University. She lives with her husband Ken in the rolling hills just outside of Nashville. They are the proud parents of two grown and extraordinary children, Hannah and Ben. Just after moving to Tennessee in 1999, Diane felt the tug of a long-neglected passion to write again. Worst book I have ever read

As a Dutchman with a great interest in WWII combined with the great reviews I thought this would be a great book.
Turned out that it is the worst book I have ever read.

There are three elements in this book.
1: The bomber pilot part; actually this is the most believable part of the book. The writer was probably helped by actual pilots.
2: The description of the Netherlands. I did not recognize my own country. She has trains going from Amsterdam via Alkmaar to Leeuwarden over the afsluitdijk in the north. The afsluitdijk has no rails.All the cliches about the Netherlands are used.(No we don't all live in windmills)
3: The description of the occupation of the Netherlands and the resistance movement.
This last part was truly terrible. The writer has Jews hiding in attics as early as April 1940, a month before the invasion of the Netherlands. She described Utrecht as a bombed out city while not a single bomb was dropped on the city during the whole war. She has the Luftwaffe bombing Dutch cities in 1945. Unlikely since the Luftwaffe had no way of bombing cities anymore in 1945 and those cities were still occupied by the Germans at the time.
The whole description of the resistance and the treatment of civilians by the Germans were completely based on situations you might have encountered in Poland or occupied Russia but not in the Netherlands or other Western European countries.

Lastly, the writer identifies herself as a Christian writer. This results in a kind of 1950's prose that is annoying to say the least. A kind of good guy en bad guy descriptions you will not find in even children's books nowadays.

I really cannot understand all the 5 star reviews people have written. Personally I like my fiction surrounded by facts.

Having lived in Utrecht during that time 1939 - 1945 I was pretty impressed with her research and facts about the fictitious Danny and Anya (which usually is spelled Anja)Some of the story was pretty predictable - Joey endng up in Pearl Harbour in 1941 and Danny running into (sort of) Anya in occupied Holland as an allied pilot on the run, but all in all a pretty good portrail of the times and I had trouble putting the book down. I did notice some small mistakes but not worth mentioning, so overall a good read.

An unsophisticated story

This is a story that takes the reader from the protagonist's (Danny's) adolescence to his World War II flying experiences and unlikely romance with a Dutch resistance fighter to a happy ending. The whole story is rather sweet and a pleasant read, the characters likeable, and the war experiences described in authentic manner. The reader appreciates the genuineness that can only have come from the input of people who actually took part in such events. The author points out that she has included reminiscences of her father, which explains the realism.

My main criticisms are that the novel is too long. A leaner, tighter story would have been more compelling. Also the character of Danny and his friends is too perfect. Some backsliding and doubting would have made them more human, but they never wavered. By contrast, some of the Dutch partisans were more believable, including Anya. Another quibble is that the author keeps referring to the "U.S. Army Air Force." If I'm not mistaken it should have been the Army Air Corps. The Air Force was formed as a separate service only after the war.

I was going to give this 3 stars, but ended with 4 on the basis of the first paragraph above. If you aren't in a hurry it's nice to read.

Muti-faceted learning approach; great for all kinds of players

Many books that take you from "beginning to advanced" seem to focus on only one aspect of instrument learning. Some choose to teach you music theory, but fail to make you truly familiar with the instrument. Others teach you to play the instrument visually without really teaching you anything about how music works. And many method books are just SO BORING that you really can't get through them at all. Luckily, this book works from many directions at once-- it has clearly laid-out finger position diagrams, coupled with staff reading at the bottom, AND when paired with the videos, it's actually fun! If you know where to put your fingers but have no clue with those balls and sticks on the page are, you'll definitely know how to read a score by the end of this book. If you can read music like a whiz but have never picked up a guitar in your life, you'll appreciate reinforcing the finger positions with the written notes. A great book for guitarists of all stripes.

For any level, a truly excellent resource..

I'll start off by stating, I've been playing guitar a bit over eight years. I received this book with little to no expectations, to be honest. It was intended to be a quick reference for scales during my personal practices, however, after reading through a couple sections, this book has proven to be much, MUCH, more than that. Bear in mind, this is coming from a metal/shred guitarist and composer. Anything you could ever want and/or need to know about guitar, is concisely and completely written within this awesome resource. To further sweeten the deal, the author, Damon (fellow virtuoso guitarist and shredder), has released a TON of great instructional videos to further refine the concepts and techniques shared within this book. If you are a beginner in need of the best training I've found thus far, look no further.

What makes this book an excellent resource is just how thorough it really is. Any scale or arpeggio you truly could ever need to play great music is here, finally. The format of the book is designed in such a way that as you progress through the lessons, the difficulty increases; Thus, your SKILL increases, regardless of your level of experience. Knowledge is key here, and the more you know, the more you can actually grow, and this here is a book of knowledge. This is a resource that every guitarist should have in his/her possession, and I couldn't be happier to have it in mine.

Thorough, Detailed, and Fun!

I really love this book! As a kid when I was first learning, the chord charts were often difficult to decipher and confusing. Damon's approach to this is so much more direct and easy to grasp. Labeling the frets the way he does, showing the name of each note you're playing, labeling the strings with note names and numbering them from top to bottom. This all translates really well for any guitar player, whether it be a beginner who's getting used to the instrument or a more advanced player looking to learn a new scale. If the chart is easy to navigate, you'll learn quicker and more efficiently! Damon really understands that.

The thing I really love about this book is that even for the most advanced player it can be used as a handbook to expand your abilities or evolve your playing style. For me, I'm most excited about discovering new scales and arpeggios. Damon's videos are excellent, too. Damon really shows with this book that his approach to teaching is accessible to all players, new or old. This is just an excellent tool to have on you as a player. It's comprehensive, detailed, and all-in-all, really fun!

About the Author
Mark Koltko-Rivera, Ph.D., holds a doctoral degree from the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University (NYU). He is an elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association. For his scholarship, he has received several awards: the Margaret Gorman Early Career Award in the psychology of religion (from the Society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality), the Carmi Harari Early Career Award for Inquiry (Society for Humanistic Psychology), and, on two occasions, the George A. Miller Award for an outstanding recent article on general psychology (Society for General Psychology). He has taught at NYU, the University of Central Florida, and elsewhere. His psychological scholarship has appeared in Review of General Psychology, the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and Psychotherapy. He was born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City, where he long lived in the East Village. He graduated from Regis High School (NYC), and holds an undergraduate degree from Haverford College (majoring in psychology) and a masters degree from Fordham University (in counseling). Mark Koltko-Rivera converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while attending college. He served for two years as an LDS missionary in the Japan Okayama Mission. He has served in the Church as a home teacher (i.e., priesthood visitor), a Sunday School teacher, a member of a stake high council, and a bishop’s counselor (the rough equivalent of an associate pastor). He has published articles in the independent LDS publications Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought and Sunstone magazine.

It makes a brilliant and persuasive argument that a century from now

This is the most impressive book I've read about Mormons--and I've read many. It makes a brilliant and persuasive argument that a century from now, Mormonism will be one of the major world religions, with 125 million to 2.6 billion members (I'm usually bored by statistics, but he makes them fascinating and provides ample documentation for the low and high estimates). Furthermore, he explains the faith in a way that will help outsiders understand its appeal--and even those who belong to other religions or aren't don't believe in any faith will find themselves celebrating the ways more Mormons will mean a better world. The book is full of surprises for Mormons and everyone else.

A professional treasure hunter for over five decades, he has led or participated in over two hundred expeditions in the United States and Mexico. The Night the Music Ended is presented in memory of that tragic night and its victims, and looks at the nightclub itself, its place in the community, the fire, and the aftermath. In addition, The Night the Music Ended celebrates the music with interviews with the very bands that attracted so many devoted fans to this popular club: Quiet Riot, The Dave Davies Band, Warrant, The Fixx, and many more. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Station Fire Memorial Foundation.

About the Author
Marilyn Bellemore worked at the Rhode Island Historical Society Library in Providence for a decade, during which time she helped preserve and promote the Ocean State's unique history. While a journalist for Southern Rhode Island Newspapers, she received a Rhode Island Press Association award for a series of historical articles. Here, she shares the history of Matunuck with photographs and postcards from private collections and local libraries and organizations.

Respectful Tribute.

This book is a tasteful, respectful tribute in looking back at the Station Night Club. I can't believe it has been 10 years since the tragedy. As a Rhode Islander, in our close-knit community, I think every one of us knew someone that was there that night, and it has affected us greatly to different degrees. The book doesn't focus on that horrific night. Instead, it focuses on the better, happier days at the club-- it describes a good sampling of the bands and musicians who played there (including original interviews from before the tragedy, and also follow up interviews with those same band members) -- these are the reasons why the Club was so popular, and why it had been such a good place to spend time with friends.

The author, from what I understand, was a writer at the local Kent County Times at the time of the tragedy. She used to interview members of incoming bands each month for her column in the paper (back from around '99 thru '03), used to attend many of the performances, and knew many of the victims. Also, from what I understand, much of the book will go towards the victims' fund.

A fair retelling of the history of the Station fire

A lot of this book dealt with the author's write-ups of the various groups that played at the Station in Rhode Island before the notorious fire. However, the author also addressed the actual fire event, though not in the same kind of detail as other books.
