Taleeb Starkes' Confronts the Subculture Telling it Like it Is...

I think I first heard of this book via Colin Flaherty ("White Girl Bleed a Lot") and I was skeptical because of the title of the book. Once you begin reading it though, you quickly realize that it's not about calling people names. It's about bringing truth to the fore!

Every race (or culture) has its share of low-lifes. These people exist no matter what. They believe that they are owed something and that everyone else is the problem. We all know people like this. They exist in among whites as well as blacks.

The difference, as Starkes so clearly and cleverly points out, is that the black culture is the only culture he is aware of that caters to the low-lifes within the black community. He refers to them with the "N" word and also as the "subculture" of blacks. They use the system, wear huge chips on their shoulders and believe everything race-baiters like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson tell them. In short, they are given too many excuses to do what they do and say what they say.

The low-lifes within the black community can cry like the best of them. They are successful because the rest of (or at least the majority of) the black community encourages them in their temper tantrums, goes to bat for them, and takes up their racist and hypocritical chants. They're always pointing back to the issue of slavery and because of Critical Race Theory, they believe they themselves cannot be racist and that all whites are racist.

Starkes' writes his book with flair and while he doesn't overdo it, he uses sarcasm and humor at times to drive points home; two things I particular appreciate for myself. He includes a glossary of definitions and 19 questions that people have asked him about why he wrote the book and his choice of verbiage, etc. Starkes also avoids being politically correct (PC) as noted by his use of the "N" word in his title. By the way, he doesn't simply use that word to titillate or evoke anger. He does it for a reason. I'll let you read his book to discover why.

Taleeb Starkes is by no means, a stupid man. He is very intelligent and that intelligence clearly comes across. He is unafraid to call out so-called black leaders who do nothing except keep racial tension roiling. It appears that this is their career path.

Starkes also has a few suggestions for others within the black community who are sick and tired of the subcultural low-lifes getting all the attention and their way as they wreak havoc on society.

I gave this book five stars for content and quality of writing. The layout is a bit off in a few places and I say that only because I'm a real stickler about that, having worked in graphic design for years. That being said, the layout is not a distraction in any way and the content is well worth the read.

I cannot recommend this book enough, frankly. In fact, I think this book deserves a follow-up.

Taleeb, are you listening? Write another one because more has happened even though I realize that you just published this in May of 2013. If you start now, you should have the next one out by the end of this year or beginning of next.

Do us a favor and keep us informed. We need more reasoned voices from black individuals like yourself. There are not enough today. Thank you for going out on a limb to help bring understanding to a very difficult subject.

An imperative read.

This book devles into the crucial observation and seperation in the African American community. You have the blacks who get up everyday go to work, school/college, museums, or any thing productive and then you have the blacks that refuse to do anything worthwhile/burn the world around them through ignorance. It defines the two worlds in the most blunt and honest way. The author doesn't SUGAR COAT the facts - which IMHO makes it a phenomenal book. This is a definite re-read and conversation peace.

Some stories are good, others too creepy

I bought this book because the titles of the stories seemed more interesting than the titles of the other volume. All in all I like it, but don't love it. Some stories are too creepy, like the one of the grandmother who smothered her granddaughter while she was sleeping because the granddaughter kept lying. Therefore, these stories are not suitable for all ages. They will be OK for teenagers or tweens. Some of the stories would be OK for younger children, just make sure you read the ending first in case you think you need to edit it. The best thing about the stories is that they are short.

Fun for the whole family

This collection of stories is great for anyone wanting to engage in story-telling with family, friends, and especially children. The stories are perfect for telling on a camping trip or a slumber party. They are creative, fun, and full of descriptive details. The narration is composed in a way that makes the oral recitation of the stories vivid, suspenseful, and fodder for the listener's imagination. Stories vary in length and also in type (some are humorous, some are meant to be really creepy). The variety makes for a comprehensive collection. In addition to the stories, the author includes excellent suggestions for enhancing one's story-telling skills.

Good Read!

This book is a compelling story that engages the reader from page 1 and moves steadily through to the very end, making it almost impossible to put it down. The author's technique of introducing the characters through their own words and thoughts is an effective way to move the story forward, as well as establish their identity. At some point in this book, I believe every reader comes face to face with him/herself. There were enough sad outcomes to make the story believable, yet enough happy outcomes to satisfy the reader. It was the best read I have had in a long time! I hope other novels are forthcoming.

Draws you Right in

This is a wonderful book. I started it feeling unsure about the book, and I remained unsure for the first few pages, but then the characters drew me in and I was glued to the book until I finished. The book is very simple. The dialog and the characters' internal dialogs are very simple. But each person in the book comes alive. Parts of the book are sad, but it is not a dark book. It is full of love and family warmth. It would make a great movie.

It has been forever since I have not been able to put a book down. The twists and turns, dialogue, deep revelations, and forgiveness (but not too soon) all contributed to a great read. I plan to send "Red Leather Chair "to three frineds and highly recommend it to others. Looking forward to Ingrid Kraus's next novel, screenplay, or short story.

More Whine, Please!

Tom Thurlow shares his sometimes unusual perspective on a subject, always adding a bit of humor, and often commenting on the unexpected. The author, a self-proclaimed Conservative, has produced a series of well thought-out commentaries on everything from politics to movie reviews to Apps to interviews. For me, reading one of Mr. Thurlow’s articles is a lot like sitting down with a friend over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine to discuss the events of the day. (His writing is conversational in tone.) Though he typically uses humor to make his point, at the heart of things, his musings reflect a great deal of thought and common sense.

A calendar that isn't stingy with its nudes.

This is a calendar of nudes, mostly outdoors, with a different model showcased each month. Models get 5 pictures each, instead of just one, but not functional for making notes on. Models wore makeup, but the pictures are natural in that there's no airbrushing and they looked like they enjoyed the experience. Buyers should take into account that this is an amateur production, and there are a few typos. Still, it fills a void; there are too many "adult" calendars that just have bikini models in it.

I'd give this 2.5stars if i could. Don't hate it, but not really like it either. Tis prob my err, but when I ordered ButtAssNaked and the pic shows the backside, I thot thats what this calendar was, jus azz shots. I was wrong. As mentioned, this does seem amateur but at least its real. Won't get pitched, but won't get displayed either.

This has as many or more front side photos as back. And that's not what I thot I was getting. But nevertheless, buyer be alert-

A weird and wonderful urban fantasy

It's Hetty Locklear's big day. She's graduating from college and starting her life as an adult. But when her diploma's in her hand, nothing changes. She's still sharing an apartment with her cousins, working at a convenience store, and eating too many sweets. Her only escape is through her fantasy worlds, but that's where the surprises in her life begin. Two new members join Hetty's online role-playing game and a gorgeous man at a bakery offers to help her find a job. Her estranged parents contact her and want her to visit as they work at Renaissance fairs. If that isn't enough to drive a woman to too many donuts, a ghost stalks Hetty at the shop and sends her chilling warnings. Hetty's fantasy worlds begin to look tame compared to her real life, and she can only hope to survive the strange secret life she's being dragged into.

Mary Pax's newest book is a weird and wonderful ride. It begins on a familiar note. Trying to find one's place in the world and start life as an adult is something we can all relate to. From the ordinary, we slowly spin into a tale of the extraordinary. Mysterious men, ghosts, psychics, and then we're hit with a sci-fi twist. I had wondered how everything would fit together, but Mary Pax weaves a clever tale.

The biggest hook for me was Hetty Locklear herself. She's not your typical heroine. She's a real woman with flaws and too many curves. She's creative, geeky, and loyal to her friends, but insecure and way too nice. Sometimes she's far too emotional, but she's brave when she needs to be. I immediately connected to her. It was as if the story could be about me. I love reading about woman who are real. Most urban fantasy heroines I might enjoy reading about, but I can't relate to them. There needs to be more books out there with ordinary woman who rise to great challenges.

A heroine for all the misfits out there

Hetty Locklear is the perfect heroine for anyone who has ever felt like a misfit. Awkward and clumsy, Hetty worries about her weight, hates what she sees in the mirror, and feels completely unlovable. She wants her life to change after her graduation from the local community college, but has no idea how to make that happen.

As Hetty struggles to become the adult she wants to be, her life does begin to change in ways she never could have imagined. She meets a gorgeous guy who stuns her with his interest in her, deals with the parents who left her years ago to work in traveling Renaissance fairs, and even ends up haunted by her own personal ghost. It's impossible not to root for Hetty as she learns to navigate the changing landscape of her world and is faced with things she never could have dreamed existed.

The supporting characters in the book are just as strong as Hetty, with special mention going to her best friends and roommates Raspberry and Maisey. The relationship between the three young women is funny as well as touching.

The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear is a great start to a new series, and I know I will be looking forward to reading more of Hetty's adventures.

Okay, not great

I won a copy of this book in the 2013 Blogger Book Fair.

There were many aspects of this that I liked a lot, in particular the geek girl main character and her roommates, who spend all of their free time eating pastries and playing an online RPG that they've created themselves. The three of them have a solid, realistic friendship and its always nice to see such a thing portrayed (especially when it passes the Bechdel Test)!

It was intriguingly hypocritical, though not really commented upon, that Hetty -- so into online RPGs -- would be so down on the Renaissance Fair lifestyle that her own parents live, since these are both "geeky" things, although Hetty is bitter of their abandonment of her and not because of the Ren Fair lifestyle itself. I thought from the book description that Ren Fairs would play a bigger part, but Hetty only attends for one day. But I did like, ultimately, how the 'high-fantasy' elements of the book function as a misdirection away from the modern sci-fi elements that eventually take precedence.

I thought it neat, at first, that Hetty was portrayed as so clueless about adulthood and what she wants to do with her life. We need more books urban fantasy books wherein the heroine works a crap job at a convenience store -- they can't all be detectives and heiresses! However Hetty's basic immaturity wore out its welcome for me. Although there are hints of character growth, Hetty mostly just continues along waiting for things to magically happen to her (regardless of whether or not they do) and pretty much all of this revolves around her need for male approval. From the beginning I thought the book was going to lead away from that, with Hetty learning that she doesn't need a man for validation, and I felt a little cheated when things did not go that way. There was, instead, some creepy stalkerish behavior masquerading as "romance", and it never once got called out.

All told, this was a decent enough bit of fluff, but could have been so much more. The great portrayals of friendship and geekdom take it up a notch, but the extremely hinky romance bumps it down again. Rating like Amazon's star system says on the tin: 3 stars for "It's Okay".

About the Author
N. G. Osborne grew up in Angus, Scotland and graduated in 1995 from Oxford University with a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy & Economics. At the age of eighteen, Osborne spent twelve months as a volunteer for Project Trust working in a school and the Afghan refugee camps of Peshawar, Pakistan. This experience was the inspiration for this novel.

Cliffhanger

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the book, the story, and learning more about the culture of Pakistan and Afghanistan, I guess I should have read more of the reviews because I was completely taken aback when the story stopped dead in the middle and said: The End of Book One. This is all fine and good for bestsellers because you know they will be heavily marketed when the sequel comes out so you will be sure not to miss it, but how about little books like this one...I really don't think I would have read it until the sequel was sold along side the first book, or the whole trilogy was sold together, whatever the author has planned. I finished the book this evening and can't stop thinking about the characters, and it really bothers me that I may never find out what happens to them, kind of like reading a newspaper article then never finding out what happens. They were that real to me.

LOVED THIS BOOK!

Epic! Sweeping! Can't put down! Read in one sitting kind of book! I loved this novel and cried throughout, starting from the first chapter. If books like LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA appeal to you so will REFUGE. With its timeless love story and exotic backdrop, the parallels are obvious. Charlie & Noor are at the center but they are surrounded by a cast of characters just as interesting, funny, vile and tortured. Wali is a stand out character and offers a sense of hope and optimism in what is painted here, a cold, dark world - especially for women. Noor's need and desire to escape is aided by the most caring father figure I have read in a novel. I love books that take me to another place and entertain - this book does just that. But I also recognize the responsibility great literature has - which is to provide provocation, thought and conversation starters about places, times & cultures that need big bright lights shone upon them. At its heart, this is a love story but beyond that REFUGE is an eye opening expose into a world where women are not allowed to make choices for themselves - simple as that - not allowed. In these parts of the world, many believe it is dangerous for girls to have knowledge. I believe it is dangerous for extremists to dictate societies' norms. REFUGE does many things - it will make you laugh, cry, weep and spoiler alert! SHOCK YOU. It will also make you think, and that's a good thing.

I loved everything about this book.

REFUGE is much more than a love story. It's an exotic page turning adventure with so much heart. From it's thoroughly engaging relationships to it's thought provoking social issues, this book has it all. And it's wonderfully written too with an amazing cast of characters. Honest, flawed, detailed, and complex. (Noor was my favorite. Such a beautifully written smart hopeful young woman. So refreshing.) The world the author creates is authentic - there is no doubt about that. You can hear the sounds he describes, see the setting in vivid detail. It does what every good book should, appeal to all your senses, peak a full range of emotions, and of course entertain. REFUGE truly is a joy to read.

My sister's funny book

My name is Lindy and my sister wrote this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it because it brought back so many memories of the great life we had. It was hysterical and easy to read.

One thing Suzy didn't mention is exactly why Burt Bacharach and I broke up. Let's just say Paul Anka was present that night and the Pacific Ocean was involved.

She didn't tell you the stories about Mary Hart and Sharon Stone but that's for her next book.

Suzy was always funny and making anyone and everyone laugh uncontrollably wherever we went. The more people, the better the audience and the funnier she got.

Hilarious and surprising!

I don't normally read books about celebrities but Suzy is so funny on Twitter I just had to read her book. Not only are her stories hilarious, but they are also informative and surprising. Her behind the scenes descriptions of sitcoms and stand-up comedy are insightful and revealing. I was also surprised because most of the celebrities Suzy writes about acted very different than I expected.
I recommend this book for anyone looking for a heartfelt laugh.
