needs major editing

The story could have been good, except the errors were so numerous it was hard to read. Massive spelling, wording, punctuation, and run ons. Sorry, tried to like it, but I am going to request a refund, as I think about it and read much better work for less money it's bothering me.

No Bones About It! This Book Is A Must Have!

The first thing that strikes you about this collection is the breathtaking cover by Rob Davis. It sets a new standard in modern pulp art. Period. But the cover is only the beginning of an incredible journey into the dark soul of Cape Noire.

The stories comprising BROTHER BONES are as varied as the golden age of pulp fiction itself:

"The Bone Brothers" is a captivating origin tale for one of the most unusual heroes to come out of modern day pulp. This sin to salvation story keeps you turning the pages and sets up the stories which follow.

"The Shield And The Claw" is a great werewolf tale with an ironic ending worth the price of admission. And this harrowing tales gives a gore-soaked nod to the glory days of the bloody pulps.

"The Scales Of Terror" ventures into Lovecraft's corner of Hell with terrific effect. Bones going toe to toe with a demon worshiping cult? This is the stuff of pulp Heaven.

"See Spot Kill" is another horror tale dealing with Voodoo and the undead. Not to be missed!

"The Root Of Evil" also strays into horror's back alleys with a morality tale about the misuse of ultimate power mixed with oriental mysticism. A winner.

"Gorilla Dreams" is pure pulp excitement. A gangster's mind transplanted into the body of a gorilla. Who could ask for more? But this tale is not a gimmick yarn. There is a deft touch of tragedy mixed with the humor.

"Ghost Train" is a previously unreleased Bones tale. In this yarn, Bones goes up against a corrupt railroad tycoon who has killed over a hundred people on his sabotaged train. Souls crying out for justice only Bones can deliver.

As you can see, quite a pulp buffet. So no matter where your pulp tastes take you, BROTHER BONES has what you're looking for.

With the second coming of pulp we rabid fans are enjoying, Ron Fortier leads the way with as good a pulp anthology as one is likely to find. BROTHER BONES does not disappoint.

Not what I was expecting, but good

Let me start with the worst thing about this book: the lack of proofreading. The first tale alone easily has an error on each page and that may be a conservative estimate on my part. The errors range from typos, to a word being missed here or there, to homophone swapping and the word "doesn't" coming up as "Bossn't". I was wondering at first if this was some kind of slang unique to Cape Noire. Maybe I'm nitpicky, but when you have to reread something to figure out what the writer's intent was, it's not a good thing. The good news here is it does lessen so that by the second half of the book the errors are few, if any.

Taking the halfway point between Bad and Good is Brother Bones himself. For all the bluster of the back cover and artwork, he is surprisingly absent from most stories, only showing up near the end to mete out his deadly brand of justice. Most stories follow the formula of a citizen being menaced by (or stumbling upon) something Evil, coming within inches of being killed by it and Bones arriving to save the day, guns blazing. Certainly the Shadow was not always present in his stories but he was known to be working in the background and not waiting in the wings. Bones mostly comes through as a corpse ex machina, more of an Urban Legend in Cape Noire than a character.

Having said that (and moving up toward the Good end of the scale), the stories themselves have some great "pulpiness" to their plots. I felt the final three stories were the best and the villan Harry Beest quickly became my favorite character in the entire book after reading his story.

One of Ron Fortier's Greatest Creations

This is one of the best new pulp heroes ever created. I'd heard lots about this series from fellow pulp collectors. It's part of the New Pulp Movement and all seven feature a zombie like former mob hitman who has returned from death as an avenging spirit to protect the innocent of the city Cape Noire. Brother Bones is one of writer Ron Fortier's greatest creations. Fortier is best known for his work on the Green Hornet comic book series for Now Comics. He truly does know his pulps.

Each story was particularly unique having Brother Bones go up against a zombie dog, a werewolf and some Lovecraft type sea demon. But my favorite tale was when he goes up against the Gorilla Mob Boss, Harry Beest. Wall to wall action, giving us a Shadow like avenger with a heavy dose of the supernatural.

I'm told this is only the first in the series. Going to have to find the others.

This book represents a giant leap forward for energy healers everywhere. It's designed to teach someone with no prior knowledge of the human aura, chakras, and energy field, how to master energy healing. A Complete Guide To Learning and Practicing Chios Energy Healing

I love this book because everything you need to know about Chios Energy Healing is in this book! Before when I was teaching a class, either I or the the students had to print all of this same information from the Chios website so they could study and reference during class. Now it's all in one place, how wonderful is that?!? Now anyone can learn Chios Energy Healing on their own with this book. But for those who prefer a classroom setting you can go to the ChiosHealing.com website to find a teacher in your area. I give this book 5 Stars because it is complete, everything you need to start practicing Chios at the most basic level, all the way up to advanced techniques is covered very thouroughly. You learn how to read auras, you learn how to use color, and shapes during the healing sessions. If you ever wanted to become an energy healer this is a great place to start. If you are a healer now, this book can offer some new tools to add to your toolbox, and maybe some new insight into the healing realm.

Hard to put down

I found myself quite annoyed that work and family kept interrupting my time with The Warsaw Conspiracy. Very few sequels can keep my attention let alone engage me even more deeply as I continue reading. Martin's writing did both. He is a master writer, making great use of imagery and developing his plots in such a way that the reader is immediately pulled into the action and the story. Historical facts are used to enhance the story, not overburden it. Furthermore, each character is so genuine and well-developed that the reader will connect with them in their humanity and love some while hating others. I would say that each novel in Martin's trilogy would make a great movie, but I often find movies based on great novels disappointing, and Martin's novels are superior reads. Only a great movie maker would be up to this challenge; still I would suggest reading the novels first. They are pure pleasure.

Polish history mixed with fiction

When substituting for Martin's senior students who were facing reading his first novel, Push Not the River, I guaranteed them that they would enjoy the book once they "got into it." Two months later, I saw them again and asked if I was right. They said, "yes." and "we think we're going to get the second book". Once they have read Against a Crimson Tide, I know they'll be back for the third novel. The newly published, Warsaw Conspiraacy lives up to my promise. Once you get through the introductory pages, you'll keep turning. You'll be kept on the edge of your seat wondering who will survive in the time of war and conspiracy. Even if you haven't read the first two novels, you can pick up this third book and be incorporated into the lives of the characters. There's just enough history to make one feel drawn to the lives that are involved in the Warsaw revolution. Martin kept me guessing until the end...always the mark of a successful book.

Talented New Author

Frankie "Arion" Roda takes the sometimes cartoon-like world of professional wrestling and gives you a look into what the lives of these people are like from the point of view of one of the industry's smallest competitors. But if you were to assume this is a "wrestling" book. You'd be wrong. This book is so much more as the author takes us on the journey of personal struggle and living life chasing dreams while also maintaining a life worth living. This book pulls at your heart strings and makes you reflect on many things. Maybe how good others have it. Or maybe how lucky you are to have what you have which others don't. It's a journey and a fun one to join Frankie on.

A talented new author who hopefully has lots more to offer. I'm a fan, and will be for anything else he releases.

Read this book. Feel inspired. And go after what you want in life. You might not get it the way you imagine it, but you will have one hell of a story to tell...just like Frankie.

This is a great story about one man's journey through small town life and suburban disasters. It's about escapism, and learning who you are. A real great story - one that most people can relate to on some level. You'll laugh, cry, be disgusted at points, feel for the some of people in his life, but by the end you'll just be proud of him.

About the Author
Nya Jade is a singer-songwriter and author based in San Francisco. Her music videos have aired on the VH1, BET, and MTV networks. USA Today hailed Nya as a “young female troubadour worth keeping your eyes and ears on,” in an entertainment feature on up-and-coming singer-songwriters. “Her cool singing voice recalls Sade,” said the LA Times. Between writing and performing new music, Nya took a musical sabbatical to focus on writing this novel—an endeavor she found quite daunting, until she began looking at each chapter as a verse in a very long song. Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four is her first novel. In her free time, Nya enjoys hanging out with family and friends, searching for amazing gluten-free desserts, and bargain hunting for her next pair of funky shoes. Nya holds a B.A. in Economics and an M.A. in Sociology, both from Stanford University.

A must-read!

Nya Jade's debut novel delivers from the very first page. It grabs you and never lets go. Talk about a page-turner, I finished the book so quickly, I didn't know what to do with myself . . . I needed the next book (the surest sign of a great book!). At times heart-pounding, at others heart-wrenching, Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four is destined for the big screen, in this reader's humble opinion. If you love fantasy and edge-of-your-seat suspense -- with a soulful and enigmatic heroine and a vicious, conniving villain (or -- SPOILER ALERT -- two, or three!!) -- this book is for you.

Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four

'Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four' is the first book in a young adult fantasy series. It follows the main character, Phoebe Pope, as she starts her first year at the Campus Below - the secret campus for Shifters that is hidden underneath Green Lane Academy. Phoebe is still heartbroken over the death of her father and is nervous about starting at the prestigious school. Phoebe soon learns that she has a power only she can wield and finds herself crushing hard for a human guy on the Campus Above. As if all of these things weren't enough, the school's officials believe that Phoebe is at the center of an ancient prophecy and now her life is in danger from shape-shifter assassins trying to bury the truth. Will Phoebe be able to accept her destiny and do what is required of her? With all the deception, danger, and not knowing who to trust, Phoebe must learn to believe in herself and her power to figure out the truth of the prophecy.

This was a really interesting and unique fantasy novel. I loved the secret academy of shifters hidden underneath a normal human school. The author described the school with such intricate detail and descriptions that I could easily see it. It's a beautiful place - both ancient and modern - and it's also a place of magic and wonder. The main character - Phoebe - was instantly likable and I found myself rooting for her throughout the novel. She's a great lead for the book because she's quietly brave, intelligent, and loyal. We see a great deal of character growth in her as the story progresses. She has to deal with first love and heartbreak as well as learning how to rely on her powers and senses and to believe in herself. The writing was really well done and flowed effortlessly throughout the book. It had a good pace which made it a fun and easy read. I really loved getting to learn about the history and background of the Shifters as well as the history of the school and their customs and beliefs. Overall, this is a wonderful first book in what promises to be an unique and fantastic fantasy series.

A Compelling Read

I loved this book. Nya Jade has created a gripping story that, once begun, is difficult to put down.

Phoebe Pope is an appealing main character simply because she is very relatable. Even though she lives half her life in a fantasy world as a shape-shifter spy trainee, readers can empathize with her emotions and actions. I held my breath as Colten Chase, the gorgeous and seemingly unapproachable movie star, began to notice Phoebe, and my heart constricted as it began to appear his interests may not have been entirely pure.

There is just the right amount of suspense in this story. Nya Jade keeps readers guessing as to what happens next, and the story has just enough of a twist on the fantasy theme to seem both familiar and completely fresh at the same time.

In short, if you are looking for a good read where you can completely lose yourself in a story, buy this book.

I read *World Serious* written by Paul Kocak on Christmas Day, 2012. I purchased a hard copy of it online a couple of weeks ago. As a huge Giants fan still basking in the glow of our second world series in 3 years, it was an easy online purchase. I was going to read it on vacation next week but it was quiet on this particular afternoon, so I decided to read it pre-vacation.

It's a short story, only 55 pages (not counting the epilogue). It's not a long read, maybe an hour or a little longer. After I finished it, I was compelled to come review it here at Amazon.

Mr. Kocak does a brilliant job of telling his tale of a spontaneous journey from New York to California in his quest to celebrate the San Francisco Giant's World Series appearance in the fall of 2012. He didn't tell a story that shocked me or had me dangling from the edge of my seat. The book isn't about kick-starting your adrenaline. But that's not what baseball is about, either. He wrote a book that read with the easy, perfect flow of a mid-Summer game at AT&T Park. There's an "A. Bartlett Giamatti" feel to this book.

His coast-2-coast *pilgrimage* balances the subtle vulnerabilities of his life against the deep seated love and commitment he clearly has to the San Francisco Giants franchise. And he shares these personal details with the backdrop of the poetry that is almost naturally associated with the game of baseball. I read many, many sentences in this book over and over again. As a reader, when you're doing that, you know you've found a special writer.

And the fact that Kocak is an east coast native, a near life long New Yorker who has lived his life as a lifelong Giants fan since he was 5 years old, all the while in the hostile confines of Yankee/Met territory, makes the book that much more intriguing.

I completely endorse this book and would recommend it to any baseball fan interested in a great read about about a single fan's commitment to a moment in baseball time that he (or those who read this book) will never forget.

Excellent book!!!

A wonderful story of a guy's love for his baseball team, and his experiences as a fan. The writing is terrific, and Kocak's story draws the reader in, as his favorite team, the SF Giants, makes a dramatic comeback in the 2012 playoffs to go on to World Series glory.

You are brought full force to San Francisco to enjoy every moment of the first game of the 2012 World Series. Wonderfully written - Kocak's skill, enthusiasm and delight in the written word shine through on every page. A great read!
